A lot of you have confused smooth and fluid movement patterns with smooth change of speeds, which is my fault for not being more clear. Fluid movement and smooth changes in speed are two different things. No one is saying that you shouldn’t move with fluidity. A lot of times when you say a player is “smooth” (ex. PG13, Kyrie, Luka, etc) we are talking abt their ability to move and adjust, not purely their change of speeds. A smooth change of speeds indicates a gradual ramp up and ramp down in speed which is easy to guard because there are no sudden extreme movements and everything is gradual. Which is what I was getting at.
Beautifully articulated, most good-elite ball handlers do these things intuitively. It's all about finding that rhythm to catch that first man off guard and actually preparing your body to take these loads, or it just won't let you move how you're envisioning it at best and lead to injuries at worst.

Always told my guards to play herky jerky. That even constant little twitching keeps your defender on edge not only physically but mentally. It's unpredictable and intimidating and have seen many times the defender pretty much give up on drives.
Tip: Practice dribbling the ball and stopping at a certain point of your dribble you have to use all the dribble's in your bag and figure out how you can hesitate with it, remember TH-cam does not have every single dribble move you could have a signature dribble move but you can't figure out how to hesitate with it just because your only watching TH-cam. It's good to watch TH-cam to figure out the basics and dribbling technique's if you want something new in your bag, you can apply that move with a hesitation/stop. (You can figure out what I'm saying if you read the half of this comment).
Ive never been a baller but i think ive progressed very quickly in short span. Something ive been working on taking from my past on trackfield is moving your legs from your hip flexors(high knees). Pick up your entire leg and make it 90* even when walking(bend your chest down). This lets you move fast whenever you want and also your defender doesnt know which leg pickup will be the one you go into your stride. Its also easier to stop imo. Use when you want, chnage it up, keep them guessing.

Videos like this are what constantly remind that AI was simply the best ball handler in the game. And contrary to the thumbnail of this video, he was VERY SMOOTH. Because all these techniques mentioned here, were automatic, second nature, muscle memory. He didn't have to consciously think or even practice this kind of stuff, you grow up playing as the small guy it just comes to you naturally and it never goes away. That's why he had more time to focus his mind on finding space until that became second nature too and the fact the played football too was a huge help in that department. All of these tools are useless if you don't have vision because at the end of the day, its not a 1v1 sport and you can beat your defender 10/10 times but if you're not smooth and fluid with your movement on the court or thinking 2,3 steps ahead you're gonna run into other defenders who will take advantage of your momentum and either body you , or force a recycle. AI was able to dance around the entire defense because he was smooth. He was able to utilize all these techniques but in a way that allowed him to stay fluid and make adjustments on the fly. Maybe im biased because hes my personal GOAT but i think if he played in his prime in todays NBA he would be scoring a lot more. I know it wasn't THAT long ago when he played but trust me, the difference in what qualified as a foul back then and now is so much bigger and he was so hard to stop the guy played through broken ribs, fingers, twisted ankles , bruised all over and still dropped 40 points. He had HEART like very few others that blessed us with their presence in the league.

I’m glad it helped. In general, when working on these tools I would say to just rep them out without a defender then start testing them in low stakes situations (at the gym, practice, with friends, etc). This way you can get a feel for when to use them and which ones you like. Stopping and starting is the one skill that I would say is important to work on off the court. Even if you just go into a feild without a ball… working on getting into positive shin angles then decelerating as quickly as possible, then repping that out can be helpful. I would also do this laterally by sliding, then laterally by sprinting but keeping your torso facing forwards. Doing this will build the movement patterns needed to be really good at starting and stopping. I don’t know if that makes sense over text or not but some good trainers to watch would be PJFPerformance, Les Spellman, and Overtime Athletes.

1. Improving your skill and consistently working on it will improve your confidence to an extent. If you can’t execute skills with no defender you can’t do them with a defender. 2. Play 1v1 and 1v2 games that put you in the situations you don’t feel confident in. This way you can play in those situations without the pressure of a real game with lots of ppl. For example… if you get panicky when you catch the ball on the wing with a tight defender, then play one on one with your friend from the wing and tell them they’re allowed to play tight to you and foul you. Another example…let’s say you’re not confident bringing the ball up the court vs pressure. Work on bringing the ball up against two of your friends who are trying to get the ball from you. 3. The third thing I can tell you is to just not be afraid to mess up. The greatest players still airball, turn the ball over, etc, they just don’t let it affect them more after it happens. Hope this helps.

@@kylebateIt’s ultimately up to your coach how you all try to approach that, so I’m limited in what I can tell you to do specifically. But if I was your coach I would probably try a few things. One thing you can do is try running some type of horns play against the top two zone guys so you can run off either way and get into gaps. May cause confusion with your defender and the two top defenders. I may also try having you run the baseline to try to turn it into more of a 2-3. I would also try running flare screens for you to try to cause confusion and get more open looks. You can also try screening the zone players when your teammates have the ball then sealing off that zone player and either cutting or popping out. Good luck with that. Hopefully your coach knows what he’s doing lol.
You’re confusing having smooth movement with having smooth change of speeds. No one is arguing that your movements shouldn’t be sound and smooth. The point is that EXTREME AND RANDOM speed changes are more difficult to guard than someone who doesn’t have any extreme speed change. “Extreme and random” I would say is the opposite of smooth, that’s why I used that word. If you can find a better one I would love to hear it. Calling out being smooth as a bad thing is also provocative and gets the people going. Like it’s gotten you going. Increasing the engagement on the video so that more people will see it.
Thank you for the feedback. I will make sure to use less slow motion next time so people can see the real speed. The only reason for the slow motion is to emphasize a point that I’m trying to make, other than that I will keep it all real speed.

I’m referring to the way you change the velocity of your movement, and I argue that a sudden and drastic change in speed is usually more effective than a gradual one. Being physical lets them play at their own pace and not rely on quickness. Also, like the guy above me pointed out, most of these guys are able to play just fast enough to get to where they need to be and it’s the rapid change that makes them hard to defend. These tools rely purely on changing speeds. No physicality.

If your defender knows what's coming, then the reaction time becomes irrelevant. Unfortunately, everyone has patterns. Just ask Tony Allen.
Tony Allen will even tell you he's gotten cooked plenty of times thinking he knew their next move.

I would definitely not recommend that. Any good player will be able to take advantage of it.
I find the best way is to be smooth and then at random become sharp because it puts lots of guys on their heels
