Babadook= depression It follows= random sex Talk to me= drug abuse Smile= trauma The “monsters” aren’t real within the story. It’s analogy for those things.
Sorry for the late reply but great comment. Most adults aren’t going to be scared of the “traditional bump in the night”. Your analogy was perfect. Things like depression, bills, trauma are real life things that scare people 😂. But I do wish we could get back to “traditional” but I understand how hard those movies are to make.
