Down the Cellar 140 - Situation Normal

  • It's a slow boil in summer's cauldron down the cellar. The pace tends to slow down to that of a slightly off-kilter rocking chair as August crawls along.
At least your summer lazing will not be interrupted strident calls to action, no clickbait thumbnail, no desperate begging for likes, no subscriber shaming, no engagement farming questions, no bell banging or Patreon pleading!
    BOILERPLA... ER, GENERAL INFO:
I'd like to thank each and every one of you who take the time to watch DtC, and am very grateful to everyone who takes even more time out of their day to comment. In a perfect world Tom or Ob would be able to engage with everyone in the comment section, but alas the world is far from perfect. Tom doesn't know how (and refuses to learn) and Ob is a major Luddite paralyzed by techno-fear.. He's convinced his phone is spying on him.
    FAQ & A:
Q: I have a burning question about something in the video! What should I do?!
A: An email sent directly to Tom is the best way to get your question answered, because while he most definitely reads each and every one of your comments, he hasn't quite gotten the hang of replying to them in the comment section, and is not likely to in the foreseeable future. Or ever. Seriously, he still calls TH-cam "the U-TOOBZ". Just email him, srsly.
    Tom's personal email is: herrwittmann@gmail.com
You can also call him if you prefer (856-866-8733) between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM, EST. This may be slightly more difficult because he's forever running around away from his desk, but it's worth a shot.
Q: I have an amusing anecdote, scathing criticism, or heartfelt compliment that I deeply need to express and I require / demand / long for a personalized response! What should I do?
    A: See "A" above.
    Again, Tom's email is: herrwittmann@gmail.com

Sad that Australia criminalized collecting history. That's an absolutely amazing photo album, I never would have parted with at any price. As Americans, gents, and with your profession, we need to avoid such government overreach.

I never understood the fear some people have when they see a Nazi Germany Swatz. Yes, we all dispose what they did but why some get so offended by a sign is beyond me. It is like giving it a power that, in itself, it doesn't process.

Because of ignorance. Many people today confuse Neo Nazism with the Third Reich.

This post is ridiculous. You don't understand why someone would fear a symbol that was used by mass murders.

@@erichl1167 I don't think you understand the core of his statement. If your grandfathet showed you a dagger he captured from a German officer, why would you turn away in fear, instead of respect the piece of history? You have no business watching these videos if that's the case.

    • @erichl1167

@@jimrutherford2773 I don't think you understand. You brought up a specific scenario of a grandfather showing the grandchildren a war prize. What about the grandchildren of a Holocaust victim seeing the same symbol? Different people may react differently based off their personal experience. You have no business judging how people would react to something if you haven't walked a mile in their shoes.

@@erichl1167 they have nazi articles in the Holocaust museum. These are historical items. You have to know how to control your emotions based on the context of the symbol. If they were neo Nazi poster just posted in your neighborhood then there is great concern. I have racial anti white symboks painted on the walls in my area of BLM with a raised black fist. Should I be concerned? Probably as I look at it is provacative. The context here is these are historical artifacts sent home by soldiers. These are in Jewish collections, museums, and in the homes of families whose jewish relatives fought in the war.

It was a great collecting era when the internet began, deals to be had and older collectors/dealers had not yet had trust in purchasing online. Now eyes are on everything and rarely does a piece escape its top price 😮

Over the last 5 or so years I've gathered a pretty nice little collection of SA, SS, and a few Luftwaffe daggers. I'd love to hear what you use to clean/preserve the blades of your collection, I personally like renwax but I am sure there are some great alternatives as well.

why is there English writing across the top on that marching band goblet ? that should be in German shouldn't it ? i've never heard of Goring being referred to as just plain "general " ..... just wondering

I found it to be fishy myself initially. It does read “Regiment General Göring” which was a flak regiment.

Also ,the silver hallmarks look English to me and if im not mistaken 'J DIX' could be for James Dixon ,a top English silversmith! Also the words Regiment and General are in English? Best ,(Ross ,England)

If you look up "Krug, 925 Silber, J. Dix" on Google there was a pitcher that sold that seems like it may be from the same set.

    • @erichl1167
      @erichl1167 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

Definitely not English, those are not English hallmarks. The crescent moon with crown is the mark for German silver. I saw a pitcher for sale from the same maker that sold online. Looked like it was from the same set. I would be highly suspect of any of these silver items. Fakers in Eastern Europe are very good at creating real back stories to provide provenance to a fake item.
