Thank you for the review. I have a panasonic s5, since you work at a camera store, we're you able to compare the af between these two cameras? The S5 came out after the s1r, and claimed to have vastly improved af, which I found to be outstanding for my active toddler, for eye af it's even more accurate than my Canon r5 (shooting only with primes, used Sigma 24, 50, 85mm 1.4 dg dn on s5 compared to r5 with rf 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.2). I would upgrade to the s1r if I knew it's at least as good as the S5.
Hi Joe, I don't work with that camera store any more, however we're still on very good terms. I did get several tries with the S5, and I have to say, the AF on my S1R felt faster than my friends S5. I had customised the AF profile, so I'm not sure if that made any difference, but I wouldn't say the S5 was any noticeably better for sure. I have found them both to be more accurate than the Canon R5 in AF-S, but slower. The Canon really snaps into focus. If you're talking about the newer S5 II and S5 IIX, that is a very different story. The new S5 II has a significantly improved AF system, and would be able to keep up the best. I would imagine Panasonic will be bringing out an updated S1R model soon with the new AF system, but this is just speculation since it's been a while, and they are due for an upgrade.
@@ohowitt thank you kindly for your reply. I have the original s5, and have tried the s5ii, and I know the af is now supposedly much improved due to phase detect being added, but in my experience it was still a few firmware updates aways from being as accurate as the original s5 on the eye shooting wide open with primes.
Good job. S1R with 24-105 is good value right now. I think DFD might be a smart move in the long run. It sacrifices no imaging quality. If it turns out that it finally works well enough in the GH6, with the faster processing, that will soon find its way into an S1-2 and L mount will take off. Don't suppose you've tried adapting EF lenses?
Unfortunately, the autofocus on EF lenses when using Sigma's adapter is absolutely awful. The DFD system works really well with lenses like Leica's Apo-Summicron lenses since they are designed to be able to rack focus from minimum to infinity in a fraction of a second, however EF lenses were designed for use with their dedicated phase detection sensors (and slower autofocus standards of the day). The 24-105mm has really decent autofocus too, very snappy. I think the GH6 will have great autofocus speed, since Panasonic have always been pretty good with their processors, and the new generation of processors from all companies are a huge improvement on the previous one.
I own the Lumix S1 and I absolutely love it. After all the firmware updates I am quite happy with the AF performance. I've been looking at getting a 2nd Lumix body and using the S1 more for handheld video. Do you know if there is a difference in AF performance between the S1 and the S1R specifically for portrait photography (eye and face detection)? Thanks!
I haven't noticed any difference in AF between the S1 and S1R. - They are both better than the S5 from my experience, but I think they are about the same. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the L2 alliance with Leica.
Have you tried using any of the Sigma HSM lenses (the adapted ones)? Heard autofocus is realky bad with them. I have a D750 and was looking to upgrade to mirrorless. The S1R seems like a good bang for buck option. But I really like the 105mm primes for portraits and L mount doesn't seem to have any good options for this focal length.
Honestly, the autofocus on those older sigma lenses is awful. I would only use them with Manual focus. If you're happy to go with a f/2.8 option, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro DG DN version is really nice and sharp, and will focus much much quicker. That small Sigma 65mm f/2 lens I showed is also a really great option, and really affordable if you're looking for something to use for portraits. You'll have to be a little more intimate with your subject, but it's nice and sharp, and can give nice out of focus backgrounds.
i just bought this camera,,,,(own the Canon R5 for two years...hated it.)...Hunts Camera had one for $2199 wow wow the pictures are phenomenal almost 3d.....almost like a Leica putsCanon to shame.......
That's great to hear, George! Make sure you update to the latest firmware to get the most out of the camera, there have been some nice improvements in firmware
@@georgestiros4392 Are you in Australia? I sold my canon EOS R recently on Facebook marketplace, and someone bought it within a day of me listing. You could also try gumtree.
@@georgestiros4392 I believe the US has a much bigger secondhand camera market than Australia. You should have no problem selling the R5 if it's in good condition. - If you do, you could always do a trade in.

Sigma 105mm DG DN f/2.8 L-mount is very good to work with on Panasonic S1R 👌 And it's price-performance ratio is on highest level.
