- In this interview from 1982, Woody Allen talks about his newest film, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, stars Mia Farrow, Julie Hagerty, Mary Steenburgen, Tony Maxwell and Jose Ferrer, the camerawork in the film and the music used in the film.
Woody Allen also discusses Ingmar Bergman, screening the first cut of his films for his sister and a small circle of friends, his first meeting with Gilda Radner, producer Charlie Feldman and writing the film What's New Pussycat?, Warren Beatty, the death of actress Romy Schneider, his 1979 film Manhattan, books written about him, technological advances in film making and the poet and essayist T.S. Eliot.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. I don't why that movie was so highly rated and I don't disagree. It was well paced and written and l watched several times and loved it.
I think the opening scene accompanying Rhapsody in Blue is one of the most wonderful of any movie. Shot brilliantly of course by The Prince of Darkness himself, Gordon Willis.

First was introduced to Woody Allen when I was 15 years of age and viewed the movie 'Take the Money and Run'....I literally laughed my fuc=ing ass off when me and my buddy went to view this flick at the Parkway Plaza theaters.... I was hooked on Allen ever since...1976 and up

Over the years A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY has become one of my absolute favourite Allen pictures. It's deceptively simple yet sophisticated and complex, and the perfect movie for a rainy afternoon.
Perfect movie and always viewed this Great flick after hours on a summer night... However, the first time I had seen this movie was in the mountains of San Diego after renting it out on video on a Winter night.... Town I rented the this great flick??

Is very knowledgeable and a very good interview. But I remember when I first started watching him years ago it took a while to get used to because he is the first man that appeared neutered and had to zero aggression or manly mannerisms. I have since grown up and realized his traits don't matter off a football field.

Glad someone else liked midsummers NSC.Some review stated he rushed it and that his heart wasn`t in it..its one of my favorites..and glorious Mendelssohn.

As problematic as Allen is, this is such a fantastic interview. Linehan was truly a master of this long-form discussion. Even his short pieces contained integrity. You can tell the subjects, enjoyed Brian's inquisitive questions/insights. My fav interviews are with the alpha male actors---the way he casually disarms them, is always enjoyable

I love that he says, "If you're very bright, you can make a case for anything." Dorothy Sayers has a great line in one of her books: "There's nothing you can't prove if your outlook is only sufficiently limited."
Haaa good . Woody is one of those quotable type of conversationalist. What a gift to see a lasting piece of your verbal record a part of public consciousness. that is memorable to appear in books magazines and even TH-cam. I have always loved truisms homilies and show business quotes. The book publisher Bennet Serf made a lifes work of collecting of celebrity quotes that ran into thousands.
Brian was a trip and a CDN treasure. On the edge of just plain strange and Aspergers genius researching mad skills!

Yeah, Linehan is a good interviewer, but sometimes his questions were needlessly complex, like he was trying to impress the subject. I'm all for an interesting question, and I abhor the simpletons who ask "What's your favourite colour?", but I'm good with something in the middle.
Martin Short and SCTV had some fun with that concept.

wow, Woody has a very concise and direct theory on filmmaking and visual media. He should/would/ is/be a master professor of the Art and is underutilized as an educator due to his "peculiar" predilections when it comes to sexuality. Its a shame and really should be corrected. yes he's weird, yes, you can judge him, but lets not overlook, or forget what he did, and what he knows.

Manhatten was definitely a smooth and relaxing movie, but nothig compared to Annie Hall, Crimes, Hannah, and of course Husbands and wives ,which is my personal FAVORITE...
Sleeper great too... Love and Death, Bananas, Broadway Danny Rose, Stardust memories, Take the money and Run, September, Zelig, Mighty aphrodite, Everything you always wanted to know about sex* but were afraid to ask.

But this wasn't the same. Hours and hours of idle wasted time in front of the idiot box. Still is such a bad idea. Bringing what were called arcades into your home.

Interesting interview. I always have mixed feelings about seeing Allen mature, which is an absurd thing to apply to most people. But he could be uniquely funny in impromptu situations, including interviews. Then his films referenced cinema auteurs, which demanded more from the interviewer... things almost too mired in analysis for much spontaneity, let alone a joke.
Also, the interviewer, while excellent, was very shiny.
Have you reflected on the influence of Jean Renoir's The Grand Illusion and his pacifist stance on the socio-political trend in America's increasing opposition to the Vietnam War, or are you more interested in the toning benefits of aerobics on women's bottoms, but still retain an admiration for the defense of Keynesian economic theory in Laverne and Shirley?
