  • Locker Nuts episode 508
Ready to continue the adventure? It's locker time! In the last episode, we starting digging into the best locker I've ever bought. Profit is definitely going to be in the hundreds of thousands, and we might even make a million from it. It's an insane collection of rare trains, die cast, models, computers, and so much more. This is day 2 of digging, and it's no less incredible, with thousands and thousands of dollars in merchandise in nearly every box.
This is episode 2 of the "Million Dollar Locker"

I’m the guy who got the million dollar diecast unit which contained every Franklin mint plane ever made…you can see it on Craigslist hunters site…just crazy! Friends with storage pirate. I wouldn’t be surprised if you make around $250-350k on that unit. You do have a life changing unit!

I would bet the owner of this unit was Depression-era baby who served in the Air Force in WWII. My grandpa was like this. He loved buying toy like hobby things and hoarding them. He did not have actual toys growing up and was in the war. When he came back and got older, the joy came from knowing he had it. Intentions were to put things on display but it never came to be. I would guess this mans house was packed with boxes when he passed. Growing up with nothing made him want to have things always around him. These people truly were the Greatest Generation.. ❤❤❤

My mother is a major collector of MANY different and expensive items. Her father was an huge collector of trains.
These items have to be from a train and hobby shop. These items are now considered vintage. When he had the hobby/train store theses items were expensive but not very hard to find. Now, 16 years later many are hard to get.
If you sell these items properly, and you have what I believe you have in the back of your locker, I estimate roughly $250,000 +.Be careful about the way you sell these items. As I was typing you were opening up some other boxes… I have been waiting for the trains to show themselves. And…. There ya go. Congrats on your find. Many of these items will never be found in brand new condition. You really have found gold.

I doubt the previous owner had a store, my guess is that he had some sort of compulsive buying disorder and a lot of money (Apple stock?) and simply stored everything away, without even opening some of the packages.

Definitely beginning to think this guy owned a high-end toy/hobby store due to the sheer number of new/unopened products. Either that or he was an tech startup millionaire from the 80's and was planning the worlds most epic model train layout. I have a theory about the networking and gaming controller stuff that might support the toy/hobby store idea as well.

The quality of the items and not finding comps just speaks to me of the rarity of the items. i bet the guy who got 55 of the cars was freaking out about getting them for less than a thousand dollars! My guess is $250,000 to $500,000 overall. Congratulations on this find of a lifetime! How sad the guy's family couldn't go through the locker because he clearly loved collecting. What a blessing for you and your family. How exciting, you will have stories to tell for years!

The model RR market can be a tough sale because the generations that were raised this, like newspapers, are much older and the younger generations didn't get involved with it as much. Being that I'm 53, I saw it happen in both newspapers and the model RR hobby. Once video games came out it started to die out. I really do hope you sell it all for the price you want! Cool find...

Man, you hit a gold mine there! This guy must have had a shop for models and model trains or something. Märklin, Trix, Fleischmann, Schuco and all that is gold standard for models and trains in Germany. And since model trains are less popular nowadays, some of the stuff may be discontinued. In the "as new" condition it could bring a lot of money, if you don't rush it and wait for the right collectors who look for a certain model. Having bought all this for $1 was probably the best deal since the USA bought Alaska from the Russians. :)

My father-in-law spent years before and after retirement buying trendy toys and Barbie dolls as a retirement investment. Unbeknownst to us all he had storage places all over town where he stashed purchases. When he was diagnosed with cancer in his early 80s he confessed to having these stashes. Sadly most of his stuff was worthless, especially the Barbies. He never knew. We had to deal with getti g rid of everything. This locker reflects that kind of hoarding. Luckily for you he hoarded something that retained value. So happy for you guys, have been watching you for awhile - I think since you had less than 20,000 subscribers. Way to go!

I love it when you have your set up for going through the locker. When you have your table, your garbage cans , recyclables and your saved items. I also like that you put up the prices as you’re going through your items. I understand that this takes a lot of time to do it is very much appreciated. I’ve got a friend who has twin single garages on her house. She has a whole side devoted to a massive train setup that runs on 3 levels with the top level almost hitting the ceiling. She has a Plexiglass door built in so she can leave the main door open at night during the holidays and light up the whole scene using village lighting. Half of the front of the lowest level becomes a Christmas Village and folks are invited to walk up and enjoy seeing the trains run. It’s soooo much fun to see the little kids faces light up at the Christmas scene, then the fascination as they watch the train wend their way through the entire layout. She also opens the outer door on noice spring and fall evenings and people come over to watch the trains run and see what changes she has made in the different scenic areas (she changes them often). I hate to think how much time and money she has invested in all of it, but at least it’s not just sitting in a locker gathering dust. It’s out being enjoyed by a huge variety of people on a regular basis.

Seems to me he was a hoarder with a lot of money and probably a compulsive buying disorder. I doubt he had a shop, he bought this stuff at retail price over the years (the receipts span around 20 years so far), he seems to have bought everything he could and then just stored it away.

Seriously, this is my dream unit... not because I'm into those collectables, it's because I'm not into them. If it was stuff I was into, I'd be too tempted to keep way too much of it. With stuff like this, I'd be more than happy to make quick sales like you did with the cars and just get everything moved as quickly as possible. Rare stuff that's obviously really cool that a ton of people will want and I have no desire to keep it? Dream come true. All for $1.

One million dollars maybe 2 million today if you sold all as a retirement project since most is not really made any longer , would take 1-3 years possibly to complete as fun project less time as work project. Americana across the board. The final display of intense project would blow us all away, ingenious idea to enjoy the cool stuff.

When you cannot comp an item, why don’t you put them up for auction? This will give you an idea on how many people are interested in them and what the going rate/cost is. You could be leaving money on the table. You could start the auction atthe price you want and see if it gets any action.

This might be the old stock from when Talbot's Toys in San Mateo closed back in 2019. They had a huge model and train section in the center of the store that was separated from their bikes and modern toys sections, so it would make sense that this is its own separate locker with orders of multiples, and just a small amount of personal stuff thrown in. The owners passed recently (husband back in 2015 and wife just this year).

But how would the individual purchase receipts fit that theory?

    • @dbrinzo
      @dbrinzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I could see that being a possibility. The area code from one of the receipts is a 925 number, which I believe to be alameda/ contra costa. 20-30 minute drive from Talbot's of San Mateo.
