Sorry guys but giving a game a bad review or "review bombing" because the game has bad systems is perfectly valid. You can't expect people to be like "okay this system is extremely predatory to the point where it makes the game a joyless grind BUT TEH GRAPHICS! 8/10"
If this is in reference to Battlefront 2, as someone who loves online mutiplayer shooters, if you separate the gameplay and the maps and fun factor of something like a match of Galactic Assault, from the lootbox stuff and progression issues, it's actually one of the better shooters I've played in the last 10 years. Honestly, the real shame to me is how good of a job DICE did in making this game. And how EA pissed all over it with their greed. I actually wish Brad was the one reviewing it, because I feel it would have been more of his kind of game and he could have conveyed the things that are actually good about it better than Dan........while still giving EA all the shit they deserve for the Lootcrate crap
Trav _ sure but at the end of the day they aren't seperate. Its still a part of the same game, its really unfortunate but if its bringing down the experience that much then its perfectly valid to reflect that on a score

I think the issue a lot of GOTY discussions have trouble with over Horizon is because Horizons telling you about a far more interesting story that happened long before Aloy was born and her story is largely generic and bland in comparison to the end of the world zero dawn story you see holographic flashbacks too.
I guess I'm the only person on the planet who thought Hollow Knight was kind of bad. Curious to hear Jeff and Ben's thoughts on that game if they do get around to playing it.

I put about 4 hours into the game and wasn't enjoying myself at all. Really regret buying it considering all the hype.
People talk up everything and forget about it within a few months.

lol Brad describing destiny's character screen "a character in the middle and two rows of equipment on either side" that goes back to like... Diablo I think? I know WoW had that, but been so long since I played Diablo 1/2 (never played 3) and those predate Destiny by... a lot.

If you want to drive long-term engagement with your game, then trickle out weekly challenges or some content. There're a lot of things that would keep people coming back, and spending money, but random access to those things is not it.
Skip from about 53:44 - 54:30 if you don't want a spoiler via Ben about the protagonist's motivations in Assassin's Creed: Origins. I'm guessing (hoping) it takes place early on in the game (don't know cause I haven't played it yet..) but still kind of a bummer to hear thrown out so casually.

In a kinda weird backhanded defense of Disney/Lucasarts, I don't think the folks in charge over there care about Video Games and Gamers. Think about how reactionary they are, going back and forth with either licensing out or producing in house because a project like Disney Infinity wasn't making as much money as they wanted despite still doing financially and critically well. That in mind, makes sense they could be in favor of/encouraged/encouraging/whatever this kind of toxic business practice; they don't care, therefore they don't understand. And while you may think logical business decisions and research should be enough to trump bad business remember THEY STILL WENT AHEAD AND DID IT!

I disagree with you Jeff, you cant do Lootboxes in a good way, for me lootboxes will always be garbage and gambling
I don't really like paid-for lootboxes in any form, mainly because I get pretty obsessive about collecting things, but I don't have a moral objection to them if the contents are entirely cosmetic and can be purchased directly (ideally for a non-premium currency too). It also feels unpleasant in games that have lower age restrictions - a decent system is not necessarily worse than collectible card games and blind bag tat sold to kids, but there are concerns when the game itself is essentially advertising further purchases to the player.

I think they can be neat if they are obtained ingame, without a real money purchase option.
The fact that there's a whole genre of game that's entirely based on its random nature and people enjoy because of getting random loot drops means there's some kind of value still left in loot drops and boxes. It's just that it's being pushed to the edge of what people might find ok to play. The issue is that developers now are adding loot boxes to answer the question "How do we make money off of this game in the long term?" instead of the question of "Does adding random stats and loot drops actually fit the game we're making?"

noshow 5 was a pretty fun video game but I think people feel it didn't tell a Metal Gear story very well compared to the others
