Hi, I was shown this in 8th grade woodworking class. Brings back so many memories of me making a jewelry box for my mother who’s passed away now, soldering my name to the bottom of it. I’m 43 now have a candle company. Would love to incorporate this onto my wooden candle jar tops.
That sounds like a great idea, definitely give it a try. I've also seen people having their logo created onto a metal stamp and using that to mark/burn their products.
Perfect timing on this. My wife wants to make a giant 6' wood ruler growth chart for our son, seems like the easiest way to make the markings is burning.
A big tip for shading that I have learned is to use a rounded tip piece on the burner and have the heat around medium (or anywhere less than the normal heat level you prefer to use as long as it still leave a mark) and make tiny circles. If it's low enough it will take 3-4 repetitions to get a medium level shade. So just lightly serial around in tiny circles till you fill in the space you want shaded, make sure to have a consistent pace to make sure everything is even and dark spots don't show up too frequently

Thank you for doing this video. What kind of fan is that? I see that it has a charcoal filter and it looks as if it is pulling the smoke into it. The fans that I am use to seeing push the air forward.
It's a standard 120mm PC fan, although any other type of fan would work as well. All you have to do is rotate the fan to face the opposite direction, then it will suck air instead of pushing it away. As for the filter, it's an activated carbon filter. You can get it for cheap if you buy a larger sheet and cut it to to size. I hope that helps!
Excellent video, thank you! I change my tips with a pair of pliers so I don't have to worry about the heat. I didn't know how to remove the black buildup, great tip with the sandpaper.
I don't feel knowledgeable enough about the topic to say either way. It's true there's glue in plywood, so maybe what you're hearing isn't completely false. If you're worried about it, choose normal wooden boards to work with instead of plywood.
It likely is, but so is inhaling the smoke that comes from burning just the wood. You should always use some sort of fume extractor (like the one for soldering that I'm showing) and work in a well ventilated room.
Wow thanks for the quick response. Follow-up question: How does this stencil method work with more complex images that have more detail in design and more shading.
@@dbix11 I've never tried complex shapes using a stencil. My thinking is that if you want something complex, it would be much easier if you use the inkjet method. Shading takes a bit more time to learn and is the hardest thing to get "right," especially if you're doing portraits. Don't worry about it too much at the beginning, try to develop hand coordination for burning smooth lines first.
@@HobbyHoarder absolutely! My current situation is that I have a wood shop with everything and got excited about the idea of this. Then I went on etsy and saw people can pretty much print photos on wood now with cnc burners and engravers. Extreme high detail. Hard to compete with
I just recently purchased the exact same wood burning tool but after switching it on and keeping it heated for a few minutes, It wasn’t working on the wood. The screwable tip became a dark rusty colour and I could smell burning. However, still no marks left on the wood I wished to design on. Switched it off after a couple of minutes as I have no ventilator and didn’t want the full my room with fumes. Am unsure if the product is faulty or if I am not doing something correct. Instruction manual is pointless in advising me on this. Was hoping you could let me know.
These cheap ones are relatively underpowered, but should still work. I don't remember how long I've preheated mine for, but it should be enough after 10 minutes. Were you trying to use a wood that might be too moist? Or has a very rough surface?
I recommend looking in your local area for wood to burn on. There are people who sell it cheap. If you are in the Mountain City TN Area, Cannons Hardwoods sells it cheap 😊
First i did my name. Then i made an Block of 8 by 8cm Of the old vans logo with the Mountain and some shades in thee back. Daaang!!! That was Nice. I really love it and im proud of myself! 🤙🏻
I suppose you could draw something yourself with a whiteboard marker on the paper. It doesn't dry quickly so you should be able to transfer something to the wood.
You're wood burning tool is far stronger (hotter?) than mine. Can you tell me exactly what soldering tool you are using? Thanks in advance. wonderful video!!!
It's a cheap, no-name brand. I've seen a lot of them with different stickers on, but they all seem to be the same. Here's one example on Amazon: tiny.cc/p7w2hz
I'm not sure. It would probably work just fine, but my concern would be about the fumes - since you're burning paint, it might give off some toxic fumes. You can get around that by working outside on fresh air, but I'd definitely test it on another painted piece before working on the guitar.
It's all fun and games until you burn a finger! Especially when you're trying to change the tip, so be careful.
Hobby Hoarder Hey what was the stuff you said to spray on at the end?
Club Sandwich It's called spray lacquer. Much easier to use than having to brush it on.

Ur share amazing skills with us
It's great
Tiene mucha distancia entre la MANO y la PUNTA .....sin duda tienes MUY buen pulso.....y mucha práctica
Another amazing intro and "how to"- thanks so much! This looks like a lot of fun to try out!
Really good video, im new to wood burning , this has been a big help, thank you.
Thank you, very happy to hear that
@@HobbyHoarder I'm happy that you are happy! :P
Great video! I’m convinced to give it a try
I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it!
Excellent video, thank you! I change my tips with a pair of pliers so I don't have to worry about the heat. I didn't know how to remove the black buildup, great tip with the sandpaper.
Thank you, I'm glad you've liked it. Just be sure not to use too coarse of a sandpaper or you might end up sanding away most of the tip.
@@HobbyHoarder I'm currently finding that out lol. I truly dislike things made out of copper. Very soft when hot.
Im hearing plywood is one of the more dangerous bc of the glues in it? Im new to this. Is it?
I don't feel knowledgeable enough about the topic to say either way. It's true there's glue in plywood, so maybe what you're hearing isn't completely false. If you're worried about it, choose normal wooden boards to work with instead of plywood.
Thank you! I'll be doing this for a new hobby :) Great video.
@@ahorangistarchild4041 Thank you, I'm sure you'll love it!
isn't the glue between the layers that make up the plywood toxic?
It likely is, but so is inhaling the smoke that comes from burning just the wood. You should always use some sort of fume extractor (like the one for soldering that I'm showing) and work in a well ventilated room.
thanks for all of the “tips”!
Hi!! Can I print with the sticker paper from both inkjet and laser printer and the transfer will work the same way?
It won't work with laser printer, because it burns the ink into the sticker paper. You have to use inkjet printer.
Wondering if this will work with a thermal printer
If it can heat up to about 450'C it will definitely work.
Wow thanks for the quick response. Follow-up question:
How does this stencil method work with more complex images that have more detail in design and more shading.
Hard to compete with
Thanks for this! I bought a beginner kit and hope to make some nice plant labels for my garden
My pleasure, have fun with it!
Can't wait to make something for my brother, Thanks!
❤❤❤
Thank you for the video! What kind of spray lacquer did you use?
Nothing special, just some no-name brand from the hardware store.
Thank you for the video. This has been one of the most informitive one so far!
Thank you Dan! I'm trying my best to avoid 30 minute videos if the same can be said in 5 :)
Awesome, thank you so much for this video.. all the best for 2024 ❤🙏🏻
Thank you, I wish the same for you and your family.
very helpful, thank you, bless you, amazing work
I recommend looking in your local area for wood to burn on. There are people who sell it cheap. If you are in the Mountain City TN Area, Cannons Hardwoods sells it cheap 😊
Hola. Que liquido se usa al final de quemar?
Are the burnt areas supposed to leave slight dents in the wood?
Yes, because the wood shrinks under heat, so the area that you burn will cave in a little bit.
@@HobbyHoarder thank you for your help. I know who to call for precise help now! ☺️
What temperature should I have my wood burner at? I feel like I might not be using enough heat for my projects.
It depends a little on the burner and the wood, but around 420'C works for me. If not, just keep going higher until it works.
Simply put. Well done.
Thank you, much appreciated :)
@@HobbyHoarder Absolutely pal.
am I the only one who loves the smell of burning wood
Thanks for the inspiration. Can you please tell what music is in the background?
Thank you, glad you liked it. My friend composed the background music for my videos, he's just playing around with stuff like that.
I love it, but what tempeture are you using?
I have a cheap burner, so there's no temperature setting. If you have one, I'd start at 400'C and see how it goes.
Fantastic video thank you I've just started wood burning
Excellent! Thank you!
First i did my name. Then i made an Block of 8 by 8cm Of the old vans logo with the Mountain and some shades in thee back. Daaang!!! That was Nice. I really love it and im proud of myself! 🤙🏻
Hehe, that's so wonderful to hear, we're all proud of you too!

Great tutorial and tips. Many thanks x ❤
Which wood finish mineral oil can we use after wood burning?
I've never tried that before, but I don't see any reason why you'd need anything special, I'm sure any mineral oil for wood will work just fine.
are there other ways i am able to transfer an image/print onto the wood with the sticker paper?
I suppose you could draw something yourself with a whiteboard marker on the paper. It doesn't dry quickly so you should be able to transfer something to the wood.
I am going to give it a go...thankyou
I got 150 grit sandpaper will that work for now or will that damage the tip of my wood burner
That's perfectly fine. I don't think you could ever damage the tip just from using it with wood, no matter how rough the surface might be.
@@HobbyHoarder thanks 🙏 I appreciate it I just got into the hobby and so far I think it’s pretty fun
Thanks for your informative and fun video 😀
Thanks for dropping by!
Very good video. Clear. I believe I am on my way to doing my first project. Thanks!!
Thank you! I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun creating something special :)
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you
thankyou. very nice. can it be used for stamping with ink (craft - archival ink) / paint on paper , after craving on wood?
Thank you! I haven't tried that before, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
How is the real thing? I have oiled my sticks and want to burn them. Is that still possible, or do the burning tips break like that?.
What kind of sticks exactly do you have in mind?
Does this work with hardwoods (such as olive and teak)?
It should, yes. It will be much easier if the surface is smooth, so I recommend sanding it if it isn't already.
Hey, how much is that soldering gun your using.?
thanks.
If you mean the actual soldering iron (green), I think it was around 40€ in Lidl. It's nothing special though and I've bought a better one since.
So many amazing tips here thank u so much
Can i do this on a painted wood piece? I recently bought a new guitar and i want to engrave some stuff on it
I'm not sure. It would probably work just fine, but my concern would be about the fumes - since you're burning paint, it might give off some toxic fumes.
You can get around that by working outside on fresh air, but I'd definitely test it on another painted piece before working on the guitar.
