Farmer on the Prairie is about my life on our central Illinois farm. My name is Seth and I am a young farmer with the desire to get things done and to keep the farm running smoothly. The farm is 740 row crop acres and 100 acres of pasture. We run about 100 grass-fed cattle and 1500 meat birds a year. Throughout my videos, you will get to know Dad, MommaD, and Sister. My brothers Josiah and Luke help us whenever there is a big project so they can feel important. We also have a part time employee Ben who is the comic relief. Because so many different things happen on our farm, there is never a dull moment. So tap that Subscribe button and come along for the ride!

Enjoyed the video. I did a batch of 125 chickens and was amazed at the demand for them. Grinding your own feed is the best way and using what you grow on the farm. Those are good mixers, that's s nice one for the age. Enjoy all your videos. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing all the details Seth! When the chickens get older the are great at disposing of road kill or any corn stealing raccoons/opossums you might trap. Hey, feed is. Expensive! Blessings.

Seth, I enjoy hearing you explain all these farming chores. I am continually surprised by how complicated farming really is. I would like to know why the soy beans have to be roasted and the others don’t? Thank you.

Good work Seth! Smiling and joking is better than flat affect, just my opinion. Who knew you could get custom made chicken feed?!?

Now this brings back memories! Our farm had both chickens and dairy cows and we ground our own feed for both. Many years ago, a local mill had a truck mounted grinder mixer that traveled from farm to farm. The grinder came on a set week day schedule, I think our day was Thursday. After the truck grinder wore out and the small mill closed, we purchased a New Holland grinder mixer similar to yours. We did not have the scale so we had to add the grains to one of the marks on the side of the bin watching through the view windows on the side of the tank. IT was not as exact as having a scale, not sure when we bought ours, this was an available option, has been 45 years ago... Also, thanks for explaining why you add the crushed shells to harden the egg shells. didn't catch what you called them. don't remember what what we used , but they were crushed oyster shells.

Nice but your lucky. We had to mix hog feed like that but bye lifting or shoveling it all in except. Ears of corn we ran that in by using the corn crib or gravity box.

Well you just down the road a few miles. I am in Papineau Illinois just north of Watseka. Check out my nephews channel Wes Farms. I would like to know what’s your meat bird mix. I have mine mixed at FS and I been guessing. I have them mix 300 lbs of crush corn and 50lbs of bean mill 50 of oats,50 of wheat. And when I do layer feed I add 100lbs of layer feed to it.

Do you have a specific feed recipe for the broilers that you raise that you would share? Do you have an idea on the protien level? Also where do you purchase the minerals you add to your feed?

    • @farmerontheprairie

Fertrell nutri- balancer is what we use in our poultry feed for minerals

We do not do the roasting. It is done at the feed mill.
