Wow, I actually like your version so much more. 💪
That was waaay better than Tom's solo.
Ugh the first three notes of the original solo yuck.
Are my ears bad or is your intonation slightly out?
Better Fix Californication solo
Killed it
This “fix a popular solo” idea is BRILLIANT. I thoroughly loved this episode and will be looking forward to each video in this (hopefully) new series.
YES
Seriously, this actually even has a lot creativity educational potential for exploring how to narrow in on working with particular music parameters ie “how can we make it different if we’d keep this aspect I didn’t like but transform it into something I do like” etc. like endless potential.
I had a band called "The RIFF REPAIR PROJECT" where I would take the SHITTIEST riffs from hair metal bands and other lame acts and SEE HOW QUICKLY I COULD FIX THEM with the LEAST amount of additions.
Bro Stevie t already does this
Is so egocentric man come on
This can totally be a series “fixing a popular solo” or something like that. This was awesome!!!
Agreed, would like to see this type of video again
I agree. This is the kind of thing I could imagine pissing off a lot of "purists" or people who treat popular music artists like sacred cows. I think it's a wonderful form of critique that's validated by it's own artistic merits as well.
Dude, your solos worked SO much better with the song than the original. Nothing but respect to Tom Morello, he’s a giant among guitarists but the solos you played sounded so cool! I definitely need to work on my soloing, it’s always just blues scale/pentatonic run-of-the-mill stuff. I’d love to be able to play something like that last one. Great work Sammy!
The whammy solo really makes it clear why you don't like the sound so much. The intro is really muddy in a way the inspired solo is not. Very cool!
I loved the "inspired by" version. it evoques the memories and nostalgia I associate with the original, yet feels better articulated and even more emotive than Morello's. fantastic job, you certainly are an amazing guitarist!
I wanted to hate it, but I ended up being a fan of the “whammy solo”. That livened up the song a bit and gave the solo and the overall song a nice fullness. Well done! I will say this though: Tom is definitely known more for his ingenuity than for his solos lol.
I guess that's the problem, because the ingenuity does not shine through on this one. He plugs in a Digitech Whammy and uses it on such a base level.
Love it! Solo 1 was my fav followed by 3 and 2. I love these kind of reimagining solo/song videos it’s great to see the different approaches and the thoughts behind it
Thanks bud!
Same
Yup. That’s the order I put them in as well. Good stuff. 😎
Agreed I love seeing his style of blending intervals ,chord voicing and chord inversions all together and this type of guitar playing really make the concepts breathable because of how well it flows instead of strict concepts when it comes to creating styles of music l.
Fun idea! And I kind of agree. I've always been a big fan of Morello's riffing, but at times I think the solos boarder on too gimmicky. So I came in to this thinking you were gonna kill it. As it turns out, it was not an easy task to do a solo and keep the spirit of the song. The Sammy G solo, although beautiful, didn't suit the song (in my ears). You came closest with the whammy solo. But, I still think I prefer the original (maybe because that's what I'm used to and expect). Nice try and cool idea no matter what!
Hey there's a reason he's so successful, I can completely respect this. Cheers and thanks for the commen!

I always remember getting the new Audioslave albums and listening to the songs, just hoping against hope for each one that the solo was going to be something fitting and melodic.... rather than some random squacky bullshit. About 50% of the time it was the former and the rest of the time it was the latter.
All three of those solos were killer. Nice.
I think the Sammy G solo sounded the best of the three x but there's something about the simplicity of the original solo that keeps it more appropriate to the song in my ears.
Ya nailed it
And it's more memorable than any of Sammy's solos
That's the one thing that gets me about the OG solo; the simplicity and note selection is perfect. I aspire to that sort economy of style, when you know how to play only what's necessary.
Hard disagree. Love this solo. Loved what you did also. Keep being awesome Sammy G.
Firstly, I'd love to see more of these videos; it's a very cool idea. Secondly, I completely understand how the solo stands apart from the rest of the song. It's like it was just overdubbed in, and, no doubt, it was. However, the first time I heard it it really caught my ear partially because of that. It's like a song within a song - or a song floating on top of one. I don't mind it, at least because when it ends we have that great return to the original. I also really like how simple and melodic it is, and how it just works it's way through three sections building through the first and second, then dropping off a bit but ultimately hitting a high point at the end of the third. That minimalism is what makes it great in my opinion. Now come the effects. I'm guessing that they, or maybe just Tom, felt that the simple and melodic minimalist solo wasn't enough without the effects. Seriously, what would it sound like played as it was done with no effects? A little boring, right? It only works with the effects, kind of like some solos done with wah-wah. But just because you don't like wah-wah doesn't mean it wasn't a great solo. Just my opinion. Great video.
Completely fair opinion, and it's been very nice to see people articulate these kind of opinions in a respctful and well thought out way. Cheers bud!
The third part of the original solo sounds as if the band suddenly told him "hey, you actually have a few more seconds of solo left" and he was like "oh crap, let me just play some scales in a mono rhytmic pace"
Even though I really like the original solo, with how the whammy cuts through the mix, and prefer it over your versions - I think this format is great, and I appreciate how you break it down.
You were on very thin ice here.
I was getting ready to say that no, we could not be friends after this.
Gotta admit though, both I and my 15 year old self who originally fell in love with this song would have favoured these solos on the record. (The first more than the second).
Awesome video and great showcase of your creativity and respect for the record.
Morello's solo is very simple but it fits perfectly into the song. Its a sombre ballad, there's no need for a flashy solo.
Then he should've ditched the dumb whammy effect that he uses on every other solo.
Interesting, I love the song but I also always found the solo a bit off but not too much. I enjoy the most of it and I have no trouble with the whammy, but that quarter-note ending always felt more like a scale exercise than a solo section. As for your solos, really loved the 1st clean one inspired by the original, I wasn't a big fan of your whammy solo - thought it was a bit cluttered, but your last original solo was by far the best and it really fit the song perfectly! Really enjoyed these 5 days, thanks for the cool videos and congrats on 1 million subs, you're getting there pretty soon I bet! Cheers!
I agree, the third, brand new solo was easily the best one paired with the music in the song.
Exactly that! The last part sounds like he was lacking time to write the solo and just decided playing a scale for the sake of finishing it
the original is bad, but the "fix" is worse, missed the mark completely
Excellent way to put it. That bit IS like an exercise right out a book
All of the solos, including the original sound great. Was this ultimately self defeating? no. Did we get to hear some fantastic guitar playing? absolutely.
I thought your first solo was absolutely fantastic. The ending was epic. I'm going to learn that tonight! Thanks so much!
You should a solo to a song that doesn't have one but should.
He's holding a guitar while wearing a tshirt of himself holding a guitar while wearing a t-shirt.. Of himself with a guitar. amazing.
I'm a huge Tom Morello fan, RATM fan and Audioslave fan. And I completely agree. I've always thought this particular solo was just a whammy for whammy's sake.
I loved the first and third attempts. You made it more interesting without just playing 1000 notes and it still suits the vibe of the tune.
One of my favorite things about this channel is how I've learned that it's totally OK to dislike music that everyone else absolutely loves, and you don't have to feel bad about it.
And vice versa. It’s ok to like stuff that other folks hate.
I agree 100% with you on the solo, I've never liked it and you put my exact problems with it into words really well. I actually liked your first attempt the most, it sounded really cool and organic and fit with the song. I don't think I could imagine Tom Morello playing it though 😄
I somewhat disagree about Like A Stone, and it's not even a song I particularly like all that much outside of the chord progression in the break, but it seems like the point of the solo wasn't to be bluesy or have lines weaving in and out of arpeggios. The stuff you played still sounded great, but it turned the song into a Kurt Vile track (which is also great). I think the point of the original solo was for the simplicity to reflect the longing and loneliness of the lyrics.
nah tom just sucks balls at solos
Exactly, the solo has this bleak element to it that gets totally lost turning it into a more rock riff.
You can play simply and soulfully without sounding like a dog whistle with a boring rhythm lol
@@theversatilehunter3651 If that's your view of it then Morello's solos probably aren't for you.
@@theversatilehunter3651 and you can dislike something without it meaning it's garbage or uninspired. To each his own. I think the solo fits the song much better than any of the playing in the video, and is thematic for that reason. If I wanted to hear 'soulful' playing I wouldn't put this song on, anymore than I would want to hear whammy pedal fuckery from Jeff Beck lol, there's zero debate as to whether the solo in Like A Stone is universally applicable or relevant in any other context other than the song it was composed for.
im so damn glad you werent given the solo. hot damn you jacked it up something fierce
Yours fit the feel of the song so much more, that first one. That repeated part near the end built up a lot better.
Here's my hot take: I like ONLY the solo in that song. I find literally everything else to be underwhelming. And I REALLY like both Audioslave and RATM.
Wtf. Interesting
You like the least skillful part of the song.
@@trivoltstudios1472 yes, because music is a sport, not art. How silly of me.
@@vladv5126 yes ik it's subjective. I do happen to play music. But lyrics and vocals are amazing. Much better that a one trick wonder solo that doesn't fit at all
@@trivoltstudios1472 I do happen to play music as well and what "fits" is highly subjective and depends on how vanilla you like your genres. And the vocals are amazing but it's Chris Cornell. He's always great and has better songs on that same album.
Hard to choose one, as they all had great stuff going on, but I definitely prefer all 3 of yours. This is such a cool little idea for a challenge, and I'm always amazed watching Sammy G shred! Thanks for doin what you do.
Thanks for the opinion tim!
I do actually love the original solo a lot. I feel like Tom Morellos sound with solos and breakdowns is intended to be like WTF? And even make people a little uncomfortable.
With that said, your solos were awesome, I loved your take on the quarter note progression in 3rd solo!
I didn't grow up hearing this song so I guess I don't have any attachment to this song or this style of playing. Saying that, I absolutely LOVED the "improved" version of this solo! Definitely KILLED IT!
Jesus that last solo was amazing I don't know why but I cannot stop replaying it!!!
I was never a fan of this solo in particular either. But hearing the different versions you came up made me realise how much I missed it. I guess the simplicity make it memorable. Every rock fan will know the original solo if listening to the fist 2 notes.
Your solos were great but the original is so stuck on my memory that I have to hear it on the song
When I was very little and listening to "Like a Stone" in my dad's car I simply could not comprehend how a guitar can produce these sounds -- I was absolutely mesmerized. You did a fantastic job reworking the solo and there is no doubt that listening to it now, your rework is a lot more interesting and musical. Even though the original solo may be lacking in some aspects, it had such a unique sound (at least in my 7 year old head) that I would not have liked it to be any other way.
The song is about isolation, loneliness and the feeling of being stuck in place, waiting and not moving on. Tom's solo is his signature sound and echoes the sentiment of the song beautifully imo
You are right.
Yep, to me that solo is like a heart screaming from loneliness and aloneness.
Idk if I would say that the solo fits the song perfectly or gives off that vibe of loneliness, but I wouldn't say it feels out of place or that it doesn't work ya know?
I kinda get what Sammy G is saying or at least where he's coming from and that there's definitely probably something better kicking around in Morello's hands/head, but I think the og solo is fine.
I guess now that I've written it out maybe that's his problem, the song is a great song and a standout and deserves something besides a "fine" solo.
@@muchachogrande2019 Yes yes, I feel you, Sammy G is alright but I won't necessarily replace OG with his and compare each other. I'm on the same boat, I think og solo still works for the song.
Nope. It's the same solo he does always. There's not much more to it.
Damn love it! Fruciante-esque tone, Morelo's wails, Knopfler/Hendrix -esque doubles and bends... but still thoughtfully phrased and nuanced in the style that is Samurai's alone... killer!
Initial Solo: Weak - almost lazy
Solo 1: Kinda
Solo 2: Morello-esque
Solo 3: Probably the tastiest of the lot.
Really interesting, thanks :)
As the video got started I kept thinking "Surely he's not going to say _Like a Stone,_ right? There's no way!"
Imagine my surprise lol
Anyway, #3 was definitely the best, as it felt like the other two were trying to "repair" something, while your original solo conveyed your voice much more clearly.
_Like a Stone's_ solo is the only guitar solo that makes me tear up when I hear it. The song is so melancholy and solemn, a flashy solo would feel out of place. The reason Morello's solo works so well is not because of the notes themselves, but because of the specific way he plays those notes. In the same way that you can hear the longing in Cornell's slow and simple melodies, you can feel that emotion in the solo. It feels like the guitar is crying out in anguished despair.
_Like a Stone_ has been my favorite guitar solo for years, and the older I get, the more I appreciate it. This is a great video idea, and I hope to see you take on other titanic solos to see where you take things!
For me, the first one you played was perfect. Totally love it and if I ever cover the song will definitely play that solo on it.
I think this is a fantastic idea for a video series, just be sure to stay in the genre you are most adept at, like for example don't try to change an early Metallica solo.
I knew from the thumbnail it was going to be Like a Stone.
This is th3 best video you've don3 man. I have watched your videos since the chanel was very small, but then stoped for a bit but wow, to see that its almost 1 mil subs its incredible, congrats sammy g.
Love both your innovation and your humility. Nothing to hate here. Really enjoyed (and learned from) this.
I like your version it seems more fit but its not memorable like tom morello’s solo. That’s why i still like the original more. You can tell its tom playing very exaggerated with the effects but blends it in a soft setting with simplicity in the notes and flow. I can easily hum the solo and it stayed in my head forever.
It is hard to imagine someone been mean for this take when you are such a polite person. Is really nice to see people on the internet been just nice.
By the way, the first solo is really a beautiful piece. But I actually enjoy that Morello's solo because the contrast between textures because the song is so chill and quite and the solo is crispy, harshy and kinda anxiety.
Whew! That whammy solo was tasty!
This is a good idea. I like what you did. No need to apologize for doing something creative and interesting. Tom can handle it. You were super respectful.
Great video! Your second attempt was definitely the best one imo and truest to the original intent.
I personally like the solo, and I don't have any problems with you disliking it. Personally, I would have a bigger problem with Tom's OTHER solos. Like, he's got some SERIOUS chops, and a lot of his other songs, he just opts to make sound effects. Just doesn't do it for me, so that's my hot take.
Also, you're missing the delay on the climb at the end, which creates an interval an adds a bit of flavor IMO.
I think Tom has way worse solos this one is fine to my ears
Fair take and I appreciate the comment thanks Cpt!
Yeah I completely agree. This solo is great, but his work on other audioslave songs is often disappointing. Instead of delivering a big moment like Cornell does with his vocals, he just goes for the same effect you've heard him do 50 times already
@@mattpassos5689 you mean like Bring 'Em Back Alive? that solo is a bag of dicks
Like a Stone and What You Are are my favourite Audioslave songs. People say Morello forgot it wasn't Rage when he wrote the Like a Stone solo, but I think he'd cop a lot of shit for the What You Are solo if that had been a single, and I think it's much more true of that one.
At first I was afraid you were going to say "Killing in the Name" was the one you didn't like. Yeah this one is forgettable to me. The solo has no energy. I don't mind the whammy, the solo is just a snore.
Your "inspired by the original" take was my favorite. Would like to hear that version WITH the whammy to be honest
When I only saw the title, not the thumbnail i thought he was gonna say Free Bird or something
It didn't need the whammy.
I like the original perfectly fine, but I gotta say, I think I like your first iteration of the solo just as much! The other two iterations are good as well, but that first one, just as an expansion of the ideas of the original, was so satisfying. Well done, Sammy G ;)
Loved the first attempt. Very melodic. Nice work.
For some reason the like button had a fancy animation.
Also, changing solos is a fun idea. Just be careful with the term "fixing", it can be a slippery slope!
Ya I discuss this in the video, you are right, I don't have a better word for a title without it getting too wordy..
It’s more of a reinvention!
@@samuraiguitarist remaking?
I can understand from a musician's perspective why the original solo might not be very likeable, but personally, I feel like the raw simplicity of what he plays goes very well with the lyrics and rest of the instrumentation. Your attempts (while sounding great), make it unnecessarily complex and take away from the emotion of the song.
Completely agree
I completely disagree. To me the original solo sound like a beginner being sent into a studio with great gear to play the best he can, not like a professional guitarist trying to express his feelings. To me playing simply means you have to play more with the emotion you're trying to express, and playing this straight and simple doesn't do it for me. But as Sammy G said, this is totally subjective
i completely disagree.
nope. the original Like A Stone solo sucks. "raw simplicity" lel, the solo wasn't written well at all, doesn't add any value to the song and doesn't go well with the lyrics.
Absolutely the right take. In addition, none of the solos would be very "Tom Morello", there's a reason why the song sounds the way it does and I have always enjoyed the solo. Having solos in commercial songs is a hard enough feat, simple, sweet, effective.
I'd say the original is brutally memorable, using the harsh effect and simple structure to drill itself into your head, and it's very successful at that and building up intensity before the vocals land back down.
I really loved how you took the ideas in the original and reused them to still make it recognizable, but with your own sense of build up and dynamics. Starting with the chord melody leaves a ton of space for the solo to grow in interest towards the end. I'd really like a full cover version of the song with that solo on. Great job!
I think all three efforts on your part were superb. Yes much more listenable to my taste. Fun to watch this one and to see your approach. You really played well over the changes in all examples.
I swear I saw the thumbnail and knew it would be Like a Stone. I've always liked it but knowing your channel for so long I could sense the clash- that being said, I'd totally listen to this version too!
Tom Morello doesn't play the guitar, he plays with a guitar. I've always found his playing to be like: "How can I not play guitar, while playing guitar?"
And here I was so skeptical when I clicked this. Good job, speaking as a fellow snow-bound Winnipegger. I think if Morello could do it all over he might do it differently, but he does love his effects. I keep thinking of how he stood out in that 'Game of Thrones' number (for better or worse)
Hey at least we aren't in Selkrik, they got blasted by the storm it sounds like!
While I liked most of what you did for these solos, there's something almost hypnotic about how simple the original solo is. I'm not always a fan of the whammy stuff myself but I think it elevates the song nicely.
As an avid lover of this song, I had my doubts, but more than that curiosity. You did not disappoint- those were some awesome takes on solos for that Like A Stone.
id watch you do this to dozens of solos. tasty jams.🤘🏻🍻
I really enjoyed the concept of this episode but I hated every solo - you’re obviously a bloody amazing guitarist, and had you written the original solo then I probably would have loved it, but my head and heart says the original is better!
Familiarity bias
This is not an ugly thing to do. You're sharing your opinion, and we are seeing an interesting, creative exercise. There's always something to enjoy and learn from things like that.
I'm actually a bit surprised to be in the minority here. I always felt this solo had A LOT of feeling, sounded apart because of the effects that - in my opinion - were adequately used, and even if it didn't completely serve the song, it still wasn't an obnoxious shredfest or outside the song's atmosphere.
I agree with your points on the quarter notes at the end and do believe the whammy effect could've been used a little better. Still think it's a great solo though.
Sorry, but despite liking a lot of the ideas on your takes, they all fell kinda flat for me. Either sounding generic with a basic guitar tone or confused when you had an effect you're not too familiar playing with. Also you playing the repeated lick at the end with a different picking pattern, that one really ruffled me hahah.
Anyway, I'm as grateful as you for everybody having different minds, but you are still factually a great musician and guitarist and also someone who I admire, Sammy G!
Each to their own. I vastly preferred Sammy G's versions to the original. They fit the vibe of the song better and are just more interesting
i 100% agree with you
This just makes me happy. People have different opinions but are not being assholes about it.
I was about to say the same thing. I always thought there was a lot of emotion in Tom's simple note selection and high pitch. Like it literally wails. Then when those legendary vocals come back in, it's just so powerful.
Nah I like the original as well. But at the time I first heard it I was totally not used to digital whammy. I'm sure If I heard it today I might have a different opinion on it. I also feel like the unnatural sound of the whammy enhances the feeling of alienation and loneliness that the song is about but maybe that's just me.
I think those are all valid points about the original solo. I've never considered it innapropriate in any way because it's so ubiquitous at this point, but they totally are a different vibe to the rest of the song.
The first attempt was super nice. I liked that result.
Hell yes. Agree and I definitely preferred your version. Good job!
For some reason I was sure what solo he was going to do from the start ^^. Even though I understand the sentiment and liked the "fixed" solos, I'm glad it exists as the original version. It left a big impression in my teenage self, and I can track my interest in guitar to that very song and solo. It was so different to anything I had heard before, I thought "what the hell is that sound", and had to find out.
It sounds great ngl but at this point, listening to that song without the whacky solo is like eating a healthy vegan meat burger at this point.
Your take was amazing, all of them 3. And I loved how the ending of that Sammy G solo is, gives tension and actually prepares you for the acoustic section
True, that last note on solo 3 left me hungry for more
That song is also one of my favorite audioslave tunes. I always found the solo kinda uninspired and thought Tom could have done better. However, your version, or versions I should say, are all pretty cool. I liked the last one best.
A lot of people are saying this, I didn't realize it was a common opinion
@@samuraiguitarist me neither :D
REALLY liked your first pass at it. Better than the original. Much more melodic, and captured the inherent sadness in this song
I appreciate you stepping through the songs and explaining the choices made and reasons why you think the solo could be improved, very informative
I liked this video. personally, I think the “inspired by original” solo was epic, best of the bunch.
I love this song, but I've always felt this solo was a bit lackluster. I loved your second and third solos. I know you don't really dig the whammy pedal vibe for this song, but I'd like to hear your original solo with a bit of the whammy pedal. I feel like it would produce something incredible.
I actually had a surprising amount of fun with it, thanks Adam!
I had the same thought about the original solo and the original piece he played. More use of that pedal with it would have been a perfect solo for the song.
@@nobodynothing6551 I couldn't agree more, honestly!
I really hate it when artists have "a thing" that they feel the need to do constantly, even if it doesn't suit what kind of art they create.
AGREED
This! To me musicians and artists should always look for a middle ground between their own respective styles and what works for the song.
Unless it is just a mere random on-the-spot jam where ideas come spontaneously, if it does not work, do not force it for the sake of "just having it" - you can be original without having to sacrifice the song.
Awesome concept. Beautiful playing and writing.
I could not agree more on all fronts. Well done and with so much more feeling! Keep up the good work!
As someone who has never heard the song before, I can say I’m going in with fresh ears, and your first solo is definitely an improvement to the original
All I can say is, listen to the song, to me its easily top 10 of all time
This is one of the dangers of learning an instrument. Before you learn to play there is nothing but the sound, if it sounds good then it is good. But once you begin to learn how certain sounds are made you begin to unconsciously rank things based off not only what it sounds like but how difficult it is to play. You start to confuse the pride you feel regarding your skill level with the feeling of hearing good music. They start to bleed into one another if your not careful. The comments here like "the end sounds like a scale exercise" are an example of this inability to remove the sound from the kinesthetic skill required. I guarantee you that nearly everybody who has a problem with this solo is a guitar player, that's not a coincidence.
Secondly the two replacement solos you came up with SOUND weak, no matter how much more difficult they are to play/how much more complex they are theoretically. The whammy you dislike gives the each note a sustain and tone necessary for such a simple solo to have a feeling of escalation, taking the song to a higher energy level for this one section. Your solos took the song nowhere, it stayed exactly where it was in tone and energy level. Instead of a crescendo its just...flat. Your comment about how the producer should've told Morello to change the solo had me rolling.
I'm sure that there will be more controversy over wearing socks with sandals, than the solos! 😉
Great reinterpretation of the solos - I liked all yours, but especially your take on a Whammy solo. It seemed to fit the style and Morello's esthetic. Great work on all 3.
Cheers from Edmonton 👊🏻
I had a surprising amount of fun with that whammy, I could definitely see myself doing it again. Hope the Oilers do well this year!
socks and sandals go together like MGK and punk rock
I never had a problem with the original solo until I heard your last version... that was killer and I loved everything about that
That’s actually an improvement- nice work!
I really like your take on this solo especially part 2 and 3 I really thought those were better than the original
Thanks buddy!
This was a really cool idea for a video and your solos were rad. The thing I like about Tom's solo is it's simplicity. When you named the solo you were talking about, I could think of the entire original solo from start to finish. I think that's a good sign It's extremely memorable. To me, it's ones of my favorite parts of the song. But yours were really great and maybe I've just been so conditioned to the original solo that I can't imagine anything else but it.
First of all great stuff!
Secondly, you know how you know the original was a good solo? Even your own totally different version at the end of the video, was heavily inspired by the original solo.
Sometimes simple is better, and helps to convey the underlying musical message much more effectively...
If it were more complicated, it may have not been as memorable as it is
Dude your solo is insanely awesome
I love the whammy solo. So intense and powerful and not trying to blow you away with intense sweeps and overly technical stuff - just playing some cool pretty sounds. But I like both versions.
Like a Stone is one if my fave Morello solos. It's close to perfect. However, I really enjoyed your first and third solos. Whammy isn't really your effect though...
You did a great job imo. I preferred all your versions to that of Morello, whom I like a lot (mostly because of his exploration of the boundaries of the guitar) . Great week of content. The play button will be yours soon I'm sure.
I was REEAAALLY hoping you'd pick the Bring 'Em Back Alive solo from the same album. That solo is seriously the worst thing I've heard from Tom Morello and completely ruins that song for me.
I appreciate what you did and you should try more of these episodes. I think your sound is pretty much traditional for my taste. But I like when people come up with different ways to look at stuff, I don't have to change my view but I can entertain your idea and respect it since it adds more layers to life.
I've always liked the energy the original solo gives away. And it does come with the simple choice of notes but in my opinion especially with the effects. It's like a screaming guitar, ending with a musical cliff hanger. Whereas your 1st version gives a totally different, classic guitar *chill* vibe. It's what you'd listen to in a Jazz Bar in the background, not a rock concert.
When I saw Morello in the thumbnail, I immediately guessed it would be "Like a Stone". I do like that solo, though I agree it's weird. Your solos are fine but are pretty "standard" and all of them would be more forgettable than Tom's. Tom's solo is sparse but memorable, everyone who knows the song can sing that solo, even if parts of it sound like an exercise, but hey, so does the intro to Sweet Child O'Mine. I'm sure you could come up to a "richer" intro to that GNR song, but it hardly be as iconic.
def agree altho at first listen I did find toms solo to be abit weird and out of place but on repeat listens it really becomes a sort of earworm and its definitely memorable and with sams solo it sounded great but it just kinda sounded like a generic intro solo to a backing track video.
I agree that this solo is comparable to Sweet Child O' Mine and will leave it at that.
Lots of people saying "weird" as if it's a bad thing here.
to me the original fits perfectly. the fixed version just feels a little to busy and flashy. Both are good I just feel the the original did a better job serving the song. The ending of the last section and the way it transitions back to the vocals always gives me chills.
I love watching him trying not to laugh while politely deconstructing that terrible solo 😅
Love it! You can tell you put thought into it by the big ol vein comin out your head at the 6:55 mark lol. Much love man
I admit I was a bit sceptical at forst but the first solo instantly bought me. Looking forward to more of these.
At first I was very disturbed... ngl. But then you played your versions. Mind fucking blown. Insane take man, I love it.
I totally agree with your opinion about the solo. I never thought the solo fit or served the song.
The ideas you play are good. Sometimes in a recording situation artists don’t always have the time needed to contemplate what is needed for a really good solo.
I love what you played in all 3 of your solos. I could see any of them fitting into the original song beautifully. I'd love to see more of these!
I completely agree with you. I was real bummed out when this song came out and -this- was what we got...
Nice work with your versions, they're all way more interesting.
