Everyone that's not an elite gets poorer. Striving for excellence in improving your position becomes culturally immoral. So good people who follow the rules don't strive for anything that would get them power. All the corrupt and evil people who ignore the rules have far less competition. Communism literally biases its leadership to be evil thugs. The status of communist elites conflicting with communist culture only further encourages them to be more authoritarian to maintain their power. Suppressing freedom of speech and abusing people they deem as threats to their power. But things were better then? Things were better in the West in those times too. The whole world is struggling right now. But go ahead, make it worse for yourself. As if Communism hasn't destroyed enough people's lives.
