    Fantastic! Could almost smell the atmosphere!! Love the panelled doors, their locks and handles and the window fasteners. Weird I know but although they are just everyday fixtures they are ornate and have been touched by so many hands for over 100 years.. and.. well.. lol.. I don't know things like that just get me. A link with the past, different times, ghosts of people who lived quiet, ordinary lives of unremembered kindness.
    Thanks again for sharing, Oddie :)

      Wonderful descriptive words friend! I share your feeling, gets to me too...that sense of all the lives, all the different personalities that have left their imprint in the house...and the sense that they like me, were once present, going about their business, laughing, crying, loving....and then gone. I'm aware of that in every old building I enter. Thanks for your input :)

      No no, it's not silly or weird to think that way about the simplest things. If only EVERYONE had that kind of appreciation for that kind of stuff then people wouldn't be so quick go demolish or throw away everything because its too "old fashioned". I absolutely LOVE the way everything was so beautifully and skillfully crafted and had a lot of thought that went into their design, where as today, it's all about making things quick and cheap. Things were built to last, out of wood and metal, now it's all plastic and disposable.
      If more people thought like us, there would be more of those treasures left in this world for everyone to enjoy. And all the time and effort those skilled hands put into making them, would get the attention and admiration they deserve, instead of letting their work just get thrown away, unappreciated.

    After watching pt2, now I anxiously awaits for pt3. I'm in total awe ☺...the upstairs to this general store should be restored in it's original fashion and become an tourist attraction. Store owners back then did it right, business downstairs, living quarters up. This so awesome to see Oddie 👍

      Yes it was much more practical to live at your place of business, it must have been a very elegant home & business at one time.

    I love how you pay attention to the things people would normally not notice, like the old ads and those beautiful metal knobs. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that has an appreciation for that kind of stuff.
    That attic was HUGE! If it were cleaned and patched up it would make sure h a cool room! Those two beautiful wooden doors were so random though, why did they use those doors for that tiny little room? haha
    PS. the ambient noise is sooo much cooler!

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you liked that! Many thanks for expressing your appreciation, it makes the effort worthwhile.
      I like you, love old advertising & the intricate hardware they used in old houses.
      Yes, that little room with the solid ornate doors I couldn't figure out either, those doors were more ornate than any of the others in the house.

    • @honey_bee65
      @honey_bee65 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      *****
      Yeah, it genuinely makes me want to cry when I see gorgeous old buildings so deteriorated beyond repair or when a perfectly good building gets demolished or completely remodeled, getting rid of any of the original features.
      Luckily this building isn't too bad, it mostly just needs a good cleaning and a few repairs, but it's so big and nice, it's a shame the owners are letting it get so run down :-(
      Haha I couldn't figure out what was weirder about the doors...the fact that they were such beautiful, elaborate doors, for one tiny hidden annex all the way in some out of the way corner of the attic...OR... the fact that they have WINDOWS!

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel the same - unfortunately we live in a world where money rules; I don't hold out to any illusions that this building will be preserved, there's a lot of empty shops in this particular town - and it's only the fact that no-one wants this land...that keeps this old beauty intact for a while longer. There's a lot of old buildings being demolished over here, then they build apartments on the block. It's sad.
      Yeah I keep thinking maybe it was like a caretaker's office, because as you mentioned, why would they put glass on the doors of a storage room. I guess we'll never know the reason...but it's fun guessing :)

    Bring on part 3! That was fabulous! The bathtubs in that place seem huge. I love all the fixtures and then there's those marvelous doors! The bed frames were sweet too. I guess those grand doors were the bedroom entrance? I sleep on a bed from the 1800's they had similar taste to mine. ;)
    I could see myself running a little mom &pops store like that. Thanks so much for allowing me to adventure through your eyes.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah the room with bed frames in it, I haven't seen anything quite so ornate before in an attic, it was unusual. Most Swiss attics in large houses like this are for not only storage, but also for drying clothes during the long winter months. Thanks for watching Wendy!

  • @VeronicaMowery
    @VeronicaMowery 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Spectacular! Never saw an 'outhouse' on a balcony before. Much bigger on the inside than it looks outside. You be careful on those creaky wood floors :) I love to see how the progression of time in the improvements made on the house through the decades -- upgraded stove, indoor plumbing, electric wiring. Thank you!

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes at first when I climbed out there, I thought they were storage cupboards or similar, wasn't expecting to see vintage toilets! I'm thinking this might have been a boarding house in later decades. Thanks for watching Veronica!

  • @downhomesunset
    @downhomesunset 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My best guess for those ornate doors are that they were all that was movable from where ever the family came fro before they move to become storekeepers. So they incorporated them into a private part of the building and passed their importance to the next generation, thus assuring they were cared for. Not the first time someone around the turn of that century would fall on hard times and be forced to move.

    Grave markers?
    Swiss have to empty their graves after some decades to make place for new bodies.
    I guess that once the graves are emptied their relatives take the markers home...
    Eerie!
    Loved it! Want more!

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I find grave markers & gravestones in the most unlikely places...actually in the back area near the outhouse, there were 4 gravestones. 25 years is how long you get an earthly plot here.
      Part 3 comin' soon!

    • @900108Chale
      @900108Chale 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I was there I think it was 30 or 35 years.
      Obviously that law must have been implemented in the 60s or 70s. I mention that due to the age of some markers.
      I have always thought that extreme religiosity of the Swiss (older generations) was kind of od.
      Especially since the Vatican struggled a lot with the restless Swiss during the middle ages. Who managed to seduce them?

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      or maybe the duration varies from Kanton to Kanton?

    • @900108Chale
      @900108Chale 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say so! Those Swiss are so stubbornly independent. I would not be surprised if one of the Kantons limits the duration to EXACTLY 24 years 3 months, two days and 4 hours!

    To me, the wheel chair speaks volumes. Some one lived in this house a very long time. This person was cared for...... I also liked the balcony. It's too bad the floor was rotted. It would have been nice to see the view! The first floor looked sound to me so the wood rot must be occurring from the roof down?

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The actual house inside is solid, but I guess that balcony was subject to the elements constantly...saying that, the right side of the balcony where to the toilets are situated...is still stable.

    "...grave markers ...it's a Swiss thing."
    Well, in Switzerland, because of the limited land space, you can't keep your relative in a plot for more than 30 (or maybe it's fifty) years. The bones are dug up; and, I think, they are placed in some common pit or maybe an ossuary. (They don't embalm their dead like in America. I don't know what they usually do in Britain; but in America, embalming became widely practiced around the time of the Civil War.) So, what do you do with the headstone or grave marker? Of course you can take it home.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I live in Switzerland, it's 25 years, as I've already pointed out in reply to a comment. I don't believe they dig them up, (unless the family have a specific wish) ...there's nothing much left after 25 years They just use the plot again.

      @downhomesunset 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ObsoleteOddity I think I'll be cremated, I don't want to get mad and be a poltergeist-LOL. It looks like embalming is really a catholic thing..... the rapture and all that.....

      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I'll be opting for the toast well done too. I was brought up catholic, we used to have to view the bodies as well. Catholics don't embalm their dead, they just take up real estate. (at least not common in Europe - the Philippine Catholics do)

    How Long has it been Empty.?

    Not like today, everything
    Is Cheep. So Sad we don't
    Get this today.
    It shows. Because if our home was 100 yrs old
    It would fall apart on its own. If we haven't replaced
    Things through out our time
    In our homes today.
    Nothing Lasts this long.

      Hi Rufus - yes, usually the attic was used for drying clothes in Winter, and also for storing certain garden produce. But even then the space is enormous; often they are two tier.

    This appears to be a convalescent home with a drug store or general store in front; wheeled chairs, nurses uniforms, many rooms and toilets with family living quarters for the caretakers. Remembrance of deaths and births and Holocaust victims. Owner may have been a doctor. In its day this was a very nice, well constructed building, very expensive and in its heyday could have employed 10 to 15 people working there.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No this was a family house and shop, the old man who ran it became infirm - those weren't nurse uniforms, they were dust jackets and such sold through the store.

    i understand a toilet without water. call it an out house or pit toilet, or whatever.
    but, on the second floor balcony? was that common in that area?
    they must have had to dump a bucket of water down the toilet every time they used it to get the sewage to flow through the pipes.
    i was expecting a raccoon, or whatever cat sized wild mammals are native to that area, to jump out when you looked down the toilet.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've explored quite a few old houses in Switzerland with these balcony toilets (sort of a vintage en-suite)
      If you notice, the hole in to toilet is large, so the waste, both solid & liquid would drop straight down into what ever receptacle provided below. So it would only be a many of cleaning with a toilet brush. In some country houses I've explored, the waste goes straight down into pig pens below...which would then be ...ahem...recycled.

    • @MrYfrank14
      @MrYfrank14 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ObsoleteOddity - thanks. it looked to me like the pipe took a turn, so i couldnt understand how it worked. i am familiar with the concept, here in the US, we still find them . some old houses have indoor plumbing, but the sewage just goes into a pit. some have just a 55 gallon metal drum in a hole lined with rocks. as a child, the farm across from us had just an open sewage pond. i used to work in construction and we would run into them. but i never saw one on the second floor. thanks for your response. great channel.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just checked it out, you're right this one has a bend (most I see are straight) ...so indeed, they must have flushed it by hand. What you say about the sewage pit as a child, brings back memories of the first house my parents bought in Australia - it had an outside toilet (Dunny) ...and the waste originally went into a chemically treated drum underneath the toilet, which would be emptied every week by the local services - later my father had a big pit dug so we could have a flushing system.
      Thanks for your very kind feedback!

      +ObsoleteOddity I grew up with outhouses & know every so often the house is moved to a new hole and the old one is filled in. Can't imagine the problems it would cause having it under the main house. Yuck. Looking forward to part 3 🎈

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Yes I also once lived as a child with an outhouse in the backyard, where the effluent went straight into a sewer pit, but later removable 'cans' were fitted under the toilet which would be emptied by the local authorities, So the outhouse could stay permanently in the same position. In a lot of old farmhouses here, the human waste would drop from the toilet straight into the pig pen!! Part 3 is comin' soon!

    • @crittert7828
      @crittert7828 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ObsoleteOddity - nobody on the mountain was rich enough too have somebody come around to empty anything, reckon it pays to have money. Couldn't imagine it going to the pig pen - wonder what evil genius thought up that - plus that means the pen was near the house - glad we were poor, lmao. I've truly enjoyed your 3 part series honey and as always look forward to more videos 🎈

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh yeah, lol - I guess on a mountain it would be difficult. Actually as a kid we were a poor family, the local authority emptied the 'john's' just like emptying the trash (came out the taxes) my father worked two jobs, and we were the first in the whole area to afford a flush toilet! lol Re: the pig pen loo - most were situated near a rear entrance to the property (like in this video) ...and the pig pens would be underneath. Hey thanks for your kind words!

    That attic was HUGE! If it were cleaned and patched up it would make sure h a cool room! Those two beautiful wooden doors were so random though, why did they use those doors for that tiny little room? haha
    PS. the ambient noise is sooo much cooler!
