Yes it is incredibly cruel to a cat to unhome him like that and make him move somewhere else, esp when he’s a senior. We’ve adopted several senior cats from our local shelter over the years that have lost their former owners in different ways and were traumatized by the experience. It takes months or even years for them to heal and feel safe again. I truly hope they let Larry stay in his home on Downing Street.

At the same time, there are a lot of pensioners who struggle to get by, because of lack of savings, lack of social support and/or disability. As it is generally a person's job to apply for benefits, a lot of these people miss out on benefits due to poor information, pride and difficulty with modern technology. The last few governments have been focused on saving money. I understand everyone wanting to keep Larry at No. 10 because of his popularity, but I am extremely concerned for him because of his age - 18 yrs old, I believe - and the fact that he roams the streets and area freely. He cannot live forever, and when cats feel badly injured or at death's door because of age, they go off to be alone. I am afraid Larry will simply disappear one day, and they may or may not eventually find his body. I am desperately wishing that Rishi Sunak would come and adopt him, and keep him safe indoors in his home for the remainder of his life.

The system was established at a time when pensioners were mostly far less well off than working ages people; now that pensioners have been the mainstay of the Conservative Party, governmental favouritism and a changing economy has fostered well-off middle-class pensioners. At the same time, there are a lot of pensioners who struggle to get by, because of lack of savings, lack of social support and/or disability. As it is generally a person's job to apply for benefits, a lot of these people miss out on benefits due to poor information, pride and difficulty with modern technology.
The last few governments have been focused on saving money. Prime Minister Teresa May made an almost identical announcement a few years ago, but dropped it after right-wing newspapers called it a "dementia tax".

Just when I thought that our Politicians in the U.S. have reached Peak Stupidity, Britain shows us that we're amateurs.
I understand everyone wanting to keep Larry at No. 10 because of his popularity, but I am extremely concerned for him because of his age - 18 yrs old, I believe - and the fact that he roams the streets and area freely. He cannot live forever, and when cats feel badly injured or at death's door because of age, they go off to be alone. I am afraid Larry will simply disappear one day, and they may or may not eventually find his body. I am desperately wishing that Rishi Sunak would come and adopt him, and keep him safe indoors in his home for the remainder of his life.

Totally agree with you. I've just posted something similar. If he's in a stable home with a family any potential health issues are likely to be noticed quickly and I think he would be happier with people he knows are his carers and not lots of strangers coming and going.
