Hi Dr. Dan, thank you for this reaction video! I appreciate your honest reaction and commentary. Although this is not one of my personal favorite Morissette performances (not because there's anything wrong but because there are just others I like more), I think it's easily one of her most gutsy and impressive. To be invited to another country and have her debut performance at a huge music festival, where she alone represented her own country and live sung such an exposed arrangement with the full "bells and whistles," and delivered spectacularly enough to be the only non-Korean singer to ever be invited back for two years in a row, is super impressive to me.
Hahahaha yess🇨🇦This is how you represented a Country Philippines female artist. Diva fearless, beautiful crystal clear voice huge stage command, control all aspect of her vocal Arsenal. The one and only Asias Phoenix Morissette. That beautiful voice she’s simply amazing vocalist. Let’s go Mori 🔥👑
Queen Morissette is a total performer she never disappoints, that's why she was invited again to perform in the year after. Check her 2018 Asian Song Festival Performance. Enjoy
We have to emphasize that this is a very young Morissette in this video. What impressed me about this performance was her fearlessness as a LIVE performer. Yes, there were imperfections, but we must consider the degree of difficulty of the song/medley arrangement. She was belting and hitting whistle notes in the same song! THAT'S EXTREME!!! She is inhuman for even trying it in this LIVE setting! FYI, she sang this same medley the night before this performance and performed it flawlessly (a raw video of that performance can still be found on TH-cam). I am simply in AWE of her vocal instrument (i.e. the rich tone, the vocal breaks, the squeaks, the growls). Are the squeaks necessary? Of course not, BUT this is who she is! This is part of her artistry. This is what makes her the PHOENIX of Asia! Note: BTW, Morissette stopped the whistle note in 2021. She's maturing now (currently aged 28). She knows her limits. She is still growing and refining her skillset. What an amazing talent she is!
@@JoeyAndamo It hurts me to say that, but I need to do once at least. The problem is she was singing better that time that today, from 2016 to 2020 was her peak as singer, althoug she had great moments sometimes after, for exemple as when she sang Gusto ko nang bumitaw. She had a brilhancy, when singing in 5th octave she had a impressive ressonance and sang effortless, siiting down if it was necessary. I am not saying she lost all these features, but I note she needs to do more effort to reach very high pitches and the ressonance is not the same. Notice: most of reaction videos about her was from 3 to 7 years ago. Why? I love this singer, she is my favorite in world, and I really root that I am wrong in all these things, or that all this is temporary and she returns with 100% of her voice later on, but it is I have watched.
@@codonautaWith all due respect, I could not disagree more. She was incredible during the time period you referenced, but she is a much better vocalist today, both technically and artistically. Some of the things you mentioned (whistle tone, obsession over high belting, sitting down while singing, etc.), while perhaps impressive, are not the most important indicators of a great singer. I also could not disagree more that she is less resonant than she used to be. It's actually the opposite. Don't confuse a naturally darkening timbre, which occurs as a singer gets older, with losing resonance. I personally would not want her to attempt to emulate her younger self because it would be taking a step backward.
@@DrDanRobinson This Festival in all the years it has been running has never had any artist back as a repeat performer, until Morissette. Not only had they never had a singer back, they invited her the very next year. In her 2018 set she sang one song 'Resignation' in Korean and English. Then during the CoVid lock-down she recorded this in Chinese Korean and English. Anyway, I wanted you to know about her being asked to sing for them again.
@JoeyAndamo ok, I understand. Ob. I didn’t mention whistle tone or obsession over high belting or over singing singing sitting down. I just said, if necessary she sang very well sitting down. In fact, she keeps reaching high pitches very well, she gets them rounded, but I have the impression she needs more effort to get them. I keep my question: if she is singing better now, why the reacts of her recording are 99% about ancient recordings, from 4 to 8 years ago? Why almost no one does react to last 1 or 2 years videos? Observe the video above, it’s from 2017, 7 years ago. And that is the rule, the reactions are about her ancient recordings.
The young mori still learning her craft fast forward to the present day, and she has mastered her craft and knows her limits now, still an outstanding performance live.great analysis as always 🔥👑
This is 100% Live.... No Auto-Tune... No Lyp-Syncing... Performing in front of thousands of people... Dancing and filling the entire stage on her own representing her country! What more can you ask for? Sure it's not 100% perfect but who is? Would you prefer a "Live Performance that is Pitch/Note perfect with the performer just lyp syncing to their pre-recorded studio vocals? Just about all the biggest stars do it nowadays.
Merry Christmas Dr Dan. Thank you for this review. Another wonderful performance by Morissette. I appreciate your comment about natural human voices. The unadulterated voice variations is what distinguishes one voice from another. It would be a shame if all voices sounded alike. The variations also contains the expressions of emotion in my opinion. I counted more squeaks than you and I'm grateful that Morissette is protecting her voice so she can sing and stay healthy. She's still my absolutely favorite singer.
The 2017 Asia Song Festival took place in Busan, South Korea. The Busan Asiad Main Stadium holds over 50,000 spectators and was full that evening. The open stage certainly doesn't make it easy for a singer to adjust the tone and volume, and the volume of the music is definitely too loud. At the beginning of the performance you can notice and hear how Morissette tries to adapt to the surrounding conditions. Then she gives a fantastic performance.
CHEER FROM INDONESIA ........ Morissette is a complete singer ... Her vocal was superb and her stage presence was amazing, Courage and confidence make her become a world class diva ....💢💢💢
This is what LIVE singing sounds like, where the mic is 100%. This is not some minor 20/80 mix where the majority is backing tracks. Where an artists holds the mic and actually thinks to control the distance to the mic to control the pick up. 99% of the cool static non held mics are not singing. They are there activated only for talking, with the whole performance mainly lip synching. For a real performer to use real mics and 100% ON, put their reputation on the line, rely 100% on their ability, consistency and still produce quality performance are qualities of a real artist. That is what artists Pre Auto Tune/Pitch correction used to do.
Could not have said it better myself. Thank you. I find it really interesting how some vocal coaches get perturbed by a performance that's actually 100% live and evaluate it as though it should have been studio quality. I'm not even necessarily referring to Dr. Dan and Morissette here (edited to add: his video here actually seems ok to me); I have seen a number of vocal coaches nitpick live performances of various artists in this manner, and it always baffles me. It's live singing; stuff happens.
Morissette's performance is almost eleven minutes of incredible singing and dancing around on a huge stage in front of a huge crowd. Especially the second song is very demanding the way she does it. You will hardly find any other vocalist in the world who can perform it live the way Morissette does here. In my opinion you focus way too much on little imperfections in riffing and running here and there and some (unintentional) raspiness in the whistle at the very end of her performance. But how brave is this young lady! In the beginning of the second song Morissette goes from chest mix way up to whistle (what you call a squeek) in tenths of a second, giving the illusion that it was vocally connected. I have never heard anybody do it as she does, especially live. And Morissette goes all in afterwards singing and dancing a really difficult song like a vocal olympian and still has the guts to whistle two passages at the end when she must be out of breath. I guess as a singer yourself you can imagine what an amazing job she does here. I have the greatest respect and bow down to how talented, trained and brave she is. This performance is just WOW!
Mori Christmas Dr. Dan❄️yeah for me she's one of a kind❤lovin' ur reaction & analysis very educational😊more Mori please & more power on ur channel😊thank you☃️🎄🎅🙏
Yea, tough call Dr. Dan...I get the nature of your channel (learning) but seeing your response (reaction) in the moment is quite fun! Thank you for your support of this "Indie Artist" !!!
Mori can be her own worst enemy in that she always is going 100% with each song. She doesn't know, or is unwilling to dial it back to conserve her instrument to save it. This was an exceptionally difficult sing. There were very few spots where she could 'take its easy'. She just moves from one effort of singing among the clouds to another and by the end I know she was disappointed with the quality of her last whistle section. All this effort without giving your voice some rest phrases to give your voice time to gather itself for the final push. I terms of a singing voice Morissette has few peers. Her combination of tonal quality and range are in a league by itself. She is such an easy listen that we tend to forget how difficult it is to do what she does. Morissette is the best vocalist I've ever heard and is my second favorite singer. That distinction goes to a Kazakh singer named, Daneliya Tuleshova.
which do you prefer, dr dan: the 'secret love song' here or the one from wishbus? i've always felt the wishbus version has more flaws but most find that better. just curious 😬
Could you also please react on Mori's JLO's medly in wish Olympics. See how she can sing and dance live at the same time for almost 8 minutes long. Thank you in advance.. new subs here from the beautiful land of the Philippines 🇵🇭 🥰🥰🥰
I loved Mori’s performance but I disliked the way the reactions were stated. The counting of squeaks became deterrent to enjoying the reaction video. It was as if the reactor has already committed to finding faults and putting less emphasis on teaching us how great the vocal techniques were presented in the live performance.
