Mars is one of Earth's closest neighbors in the solar system, but it's a completely different world than the one we live in. What intrigues you the most about the red planet?

We got very remote and isolated places right here on Earth with no human presence or settlements at all 🌏🌎🌍 making those places more human livelihood like, I think would be way easier and cheaper than just trying to colonize something that is totally dead 🌑🌑🌑

National Geographic Mars is a waste when we know of several moons with water oceans.

It fascinates me that while we are destroying Earth's biosphere we are actively seeking the next planet to destroy, or maybe in the case of Mars we are trying to understand why this planet can no longer sustain life, if ever there was any. I think the reason for going is so they can find rare elements and or the discovery of something to use as a weapon.

Fun facts: Mars is the most explored planet in the Solar System, other than Earth. Mars will most likely be the next target for manned missions. Excluding Earth, Mars has the most hospitable weather in the Solar System, where temperatures in the Summer can reach a nice 35 degrees celsius. Mars has the largest dust storms, which can even cover the whole planet.

They also map weather patterns and jet streams and monitor the ice caps. In addition, they can map CO2, suphar, carbon monoxide and other particulates in the air.

Our presence on earth is nothing but just an insignificant presence for a very short while, compared to earth's existence itself. We are at phase where the planet is now hospitable to living things. It is not impossible that we will reach the phase where earth will be like mars. Extreme temperatures, dead volcanoes, and dried up seas. By then we would have realized that perhaps plastic wasn't such a big a of problem as compared to what earth has in stored for us. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.

Mars lost most of its atmosphere when it was captured like a comet by the Sun. We know Mars is a captured planet because its axial tilt doesn't match closely with the axial tilt of the Sun, it matches closely with Saturn's axial tilt so Mars was likely orbiting Saturn when it was earth-like, when Saturn was a dwarf star before it was captured by the Sun and lost its mass.

If humans want to survive long term inhabiting other planets is essential. How do you suggest we "fix" our own planet? Will we be able to live here indefinitely? Absolutely not.

I think something more significant happened on the inner planets around the same time and that's why they're all so different yet so similar. If the Earth's Dinosaurs (and most of life in general) went thru a huge shift, and the geology of Mars stopped around the same time whats to say something didnt happen on Venus that helped it get where it is today? Say a small asteroid came thru the inner Solar System, broke up, and collided with the inner planets changing them forever? The most affected planet being Venus where the interaction lead to a backwards rotation and extensive global volcanism. Truth is we can't truly and accurately know what happened way back then; Its fun to hypothesis.

Temperature is -80C, max wind 60mph, atmosphere is almost purely carbon dioxide and the pressure is 1/100 that of earth. Which means you would not even feel the wind but maybe the wind chill. Gravity is less than half of earth at 38% so your bones would become weak. Trace oxygen, trace water. Nice place to visit, though, probably better than Canada today.

I think the key to humanity's survival comes from finding an earthlike planet within 10 light years, and the ability to travel at around 6%+ the speed of light, which is currently theoretically achievable. That would allow us to reach there within 100 years.
However, what immunity would we lack to new viruses etc?

There are some serious challenges to convert Mars into a habitable planet for humans. There are chemical and biological obstacles related to soil, water and atmosphere. There is no magnetosphere to speak of which will make anything other than subterranean settlements dangerous. Any such settlements would also probably have to be located near the poles. If we can answer the chemical, biological other daunting questions, we are still talking centuries. Which is okay as long as we do not 'muck' up Earth in the interim. Take care...be safe!
