    Thank you!!!!! I'm a clarinetist and play double lip. I use it playing saxophone. Some sax players I know thought it was strange and had never heard of playing sax with double lip embouchure.

    I'm glad you posted this video I started playing sax in 5th grade and I always played double lip. After being in the military band for about 6 six years I had a friend who was a great tenor player and he told me that most guys put their teeth on the top of the mouthpiece. I never knew most players did this. I tried single lip but I could never get used to the feeling. I've always gotten compliments on my sound so now after watching you I feel even more confident about using double lip.

      Jacob Smith man... I only knew double lip for the longest... I practiced so much that upper teeth cut through my lip one day. Instead of giving it a week to heal, I went to normal embouchure just to keep playing... After a week I went to another world! A person with your experience would prolly take a month to transition but ... if you did...

    Quamon, thank you for explaining the double lip embouchure. I’m 72 and took up the sax. I can remember my uncle playing the tenor when I was a child. I never recall seeing a patch on his mouthpiece. I started using the patch, but never liked it. I read where they would last 6 months for some players. I was lucky to get 6 days out of my patch. I thought what a waste, and thought there was a better way. Thank you for explaining it. It has allowed me to form a better embouchure and sound, and ditch the patch.

    Thank you for this my sons been playing since the 5th grade he's now in 8th. His once perfectly aligned teeth are badly chipped now...I came across your video and I showed him he sat down and was able to use your technique he sounded great. Hopefully no more chipping cuz he really loves to play!!!

    OHH! About 6 hundred years ago, well maybe 5, I started as a child on clarinet (classically) and it was of course double lip.. By 20, I had found jaaaazzzzz and got me a tenor.
    I gave it no thought and just continued with double lip until about the time I shifted to a metal mouthpiece when somebody said to me "Hey! You playing double lip, here Man?"
    No idea what he meant but I took his explanation and with great guilt for my old teacher, I tried single lip..on both!
    Initially, I felt that I'd lost some control and certainly the tone for which I had been complimented.. BUT I persevered and both gradually returned and I really felt that as a young guy & my technique flourished, I was starting to blow up a storm! Found subtoning without knowing that I had!
    Years go by..They do so easily. SO EASILY!
    Eventually, I'd gone through so many sax bite plates and made so many ridges on clrt. mouthpieces that I wondered how my teeth hadn't actually penetrated my bottom lip as well..
    I realised what was behind all this and after some years tried a return to double lip!
    Christ.. I'm a 12 year old beginner all over again! Can't keep the air down the bugle..squirting it everywhere, including thru' my ears and other orifices, everywhere except down the damned instrument.. don't sound too good either..can't keep my cheeks in..squeak like an army of mice needing oil1..
    Maybe if I try the Adagio from Mozart's Clrt Concerto.. Hey CUT IT OUT!!!
    Mozart's gonna get you!
    I can't quarrel with your advice because I know that it's right. It's good advice!
    But if I'm going to pile in hard on a 2/3 chorus solo on Georgia On My Mind to a bloody big audience of jazz-aware folks, the groove on that bite plate of my Otto Link Florida 8* is going to get a bit deeper and my two upper incisors are going to get a bit shorter.
    For the mouth-piece groove, I have a goodly supply of acrylic replacement and some fine files.
    For the diminishing upper teeth I have a diminishing number of years!
    But don't we all? ....even wearers of nappies...diapers?

    Is it bad idea to use this first as enough to start using it now ? Also is it a bad idea to go back and forth. I notice as I’m trying now it feels like it can help my single lip one but I also would like to maybe play double lip but I also would like to play 6 hours… so can I do some double lip a day and go back to single lip and if so does that still help develop the double lip? And if you’re working on double lip should you stop playing single lipv

    Excellent demonstration. I also transitioned to double lip as it helped me get a more open throat position. I've a question. As you go to the lower register do you move your lower lip (and the jaw) backward and when you go to the upper register do you take your bottom lip (and the jaw) forward? This is basically to keep the saxophone in tune. Dave Liebman suggests this method. Basically, i've a problem keeping my notes above G in tune. My middle D is extremely sharp whereas notes above G (with Octave) are all flat. My set up is Yamaha YAS 23 with Yamaha 4c mouthpiece and Rico 2.5 reeds.

      Dinesh Bhadwal Man... Middle D gives some of us some real probs, I'm +15 to +20 always on the tuner with it and mid Eb, everything else in tune.... idk, maybe a key-height thing.

    Playing clarinet and oboe, it was just natural to do the same on sax. The downside (at least for me) is double lip takes a lot of edge off the saxophone sound. I'm still searching for a mouthpiece to make up the difference.

  • @chrismills5110
    @chrismills5110 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You do not have to fold either lip back over your teeth, for a genuine double-lip embouchure. Just keep your lips completely natural, and you will improve your tone a lot

    I commented on your videos quite some time ago and requested information as to how I could produce the subtone sound with the double lip embouchure. But understandably you do not read comments and most others TH-camrs also do not do so. I am writing yet again in the hope you will help me out with an answer. As an accomplished instrumentalist surely you must use the subtone sound at times so must surely know all about how to produce this most beautiful effect. I shall be looking forward to your reply. Thank you.

    Hi! Ive got tenor sax and Im new to it. When I play, I can get clean and good sound above G note, on the contrary, when I try on G note and below, I get one note above all the time. With the octave key, I get all notes like its have to be. My friend tried and played my sax. There's not mechanical thing. What would be your diagnose? Thank you...

      You have to loosen up your embouchure and put more mouthpiece in your mouth. Also, try to blow warm air, kinda like your trying to fog up a mirror. That should help.

    I am no saxophonist of any repute but play for my own pleasure. I have played double lip for ever. While i can play hard and loud, soft and very soft, i seem not to be able to produce the subtone sound. Is it possible to get subtones with a double lip embouchure?

    • @ThirdEyeFX
      @ThirdEyeFX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s possible but you may need to loosen your embouchure more and push more air through from your diaphragm. Push the mouth piece further down the neck to make up for the looseness. Make sure your instrument is in tune too. You won’t be able to get down there if you’re not in tune to begin with :)

    When you reached the top of the scale at 1:31, and your tone kind of quivered in a cool way. Was this excessive vibrato? I hear this all the time in iconic jazz pieces and professionals but no one ever talks about it 😢

    • @audreygrimm4759
      @audreygrimm4759 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That the hidden trick I find when I want to really make my sax whine with vibrato. Your mouth has flexibility to move on the mouthpiece when you use double lip method and change your tone more naturally because your stream of air flows differently .

    hi, it has been more then 6 years i am trying t learn to play on my alto, and i can't play 1st register with my front teeth on the mouth piece, it just goes to 2nd register right after C sharp, and especially F and lower notes, i just can't. so i play without the teeth touching anything. I think I am doing double lip embouchure, is that ok? is that normal that some people can't put their upper teeth on the mouth piece and they can still sound good ? please give me a good advise because whenever hear all these instructors on youtube say upper teeth on the mouth piece is a crucial thing I feel like putting the saxophone away and not try to play any more because they make me believe that i am doing it wrong and that can't learn saxophone the right way, and want to give up, . i am really confused. why i can't play the low register without accidentally switching to 2nd register, i just can't blow straight to low register like that. thank you

    • @ThirdEyeFX
      @ThirdEyeFX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teeth on top is the classical way of playing but you have to play the way it feels natural to you. It should feel like you’re free. That being said, make sure that your sax is in good working condition by having a tech tune it up. Work on deep breathing exercises. Also look up jody jazz tutorial on jazz embouchure. There’s a good suggestion in there about allowing the position of the mouthpiece to be sharp so you can loosen your embouchure and end up in tune.

  • @vivianastridge2167
    @vivianastridge2167 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its about time some super professional took up the long discarded double lip embouchure. You have very clearly detailed just how the top lip must be folded down over the teeth so that the part above the red part of the lip touches the top of the mouthpiece. All this is perfectly clear and understandable. But you have totally ignored any description of just how or what the lower lip is supposed to be doing. Please be kind enough to describe in detail the folding over, if any and how much if any of the lower lip is to folded over the lower teeth and what part of the lower lip is actually and directly over the lower teeth and where does the reed sit, at the start of the lay, at mid distance or near the tip or what. I hope you will find the time to complete what started off as a lucid account but fell down when you got to the lower lip details. Thank you . I just cannot hear enough of you playing subtone on tenor. Could you give me a few links or even just one link except Misty which I listen to for ever.
    Thank you again.

    So offense but both sounds weren't full at all. I play "one lip" and have such a big sound. I was taught by Harvey pittels student and everything I'm learning is from Harvey. The quality of tone is not there. Open up more and play with a faster air speed and intensity when you play both loud and quiet. I've seen mostly jazz players use that but for subtone
