You've inspired me to read all of these books...I've read 'On Writing' but that's about it.
Letters to a Young Poet by Rilke. That's a desert island book for me. It's overflowing with quotes about writing, creativity, love, and living. Here's one of my favorites: "You are so young, so before all beginning, and I want to beg you, as much as I can, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves-like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given to you because you would not be able to live them. The point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."
This is wonderful. Thanks for sharing!
Here are my Top 5 writing related books: The Seven Basic Story Plots by Christopher Vogler; The Anatomy of Story and the Anatomy of Genre, both by John Truby; How Fiction Words by James Wood; Writing Your Story's Theme by K.M. Weiland; Story Genius by Lisa Cron; Dynamic Story Creation in Plain English by Maxwell Alexander Drake; and The Idea by Erik Bork.
Great list! I'll add them to my must-reads.
@@JamesWinterthorn I think you will be really happy you did. If you are a Pantser/Gardner, then Writing Into The Dark by Dean Wesley Smith is also good.
The current edition of Vogler's book is: The Writer's Journey - 25th Anniversary Edition: Mythic Structure for Writers (I have the 1st and 2nd edition. I don't know that there is a good reason to buy a later edition - if there is, please let me know). I see behind you Virginia Woolf looking longingly at a bottle of alcohol.
That's funny about the poster. I didn't even notice it.
@@JamesWinterthorn Indeed. Quite the visual joke.
Hello randomly came across this video on my feed and love it. I’m in college and 19. I’m majored in a business field but I want to learn to write. What would you suggest to do?
That's wonderful! I would start journaling. Write down your thoughts on a regular basis and learn your voice as you write. You'll find inspiration and style simply by writing. Beyond that, try new projects or check out a book or two on writing. King's "On Writing" is always a hit for new writers. Best of luck, and thanks for watching.
Thank you
I just started taking James' class, Writer's Theory N90. It's really helped me to better understand story structure. It's a prescribed story class which I can't say I've seen before. Super helpful.
