Astonishing pianist. Few, if any, have equalled the musicality of Margulis's interpretation of the Chopin Etudes. He brings out colours, textures and inner voices in these miniature works of genius that are missing on the vast majority of recordings. What a tragedy he didn't get to record the whole set.
Chopin was one of the greatest composers and deserves to have his music interpreted in awey that pays attention to its musical qualities, not as mere athletic feats by the performer. I wish I had known these performances earlier. They are marvelous!
Without sounding at all pedantic (though he was a supreme teacher) Margulis explicates scores, making them all the more musical. It’s what great choreographers did: Jerome Robbins with Chopin, Balanchine with Stravinsky. Compared with Margulis, most other pianists are mere virtuosos.
It's was special PEOPLE--professors of Musical education, culture of Piano playing in Leningrad, now, St Petersburg Conservatory! ....Many talanted personality pianists graduated from that Epochal TIME! Vitaliy Margulis 'd studying with Samary I. Savchinsky, who established in Leningrad 1936 special music school for talanted children & afterwards become a professor in Conservatory
look at that bulge by the outer part of his hands, lol i've heard pianists have that part of the handle big due to the using that part of the muscle so much
I don't know if you have heard Bach's Preludes and Fugues by Margulis... If not, i've just posted them, here it is the link. It's absolute unique! th-cam.com/video/RXF2sqyIIYU/w-d-xo.html
His recordings used to be available in full on his website, but it looks like they've been taken down. It's a pity that I haven't been able to find any of his early Soviet recordings. I don't even know if he recorded any.
Mindblowing voicing for Op. 10 No. 2, I'm not exaggerating when I say that his interpretation has completely changed how I view this piece.

I just discovered Margulis. I wonder how many other great pianists I don't know about.
Wow, very interesting interpretation of the second etude. Really like the voicing
Étude Op. 10 No.8: amazing left hand!

This performance forces me to ask myself if I have underestimated Chopin until now.
Genius of a pianist. Technical performance laced with a singing tone to it.
I just discovered this pianist today, what a game!

Never read anything more disrespectful. And ignorant, of course.
There are many wonderful contemporary pianists. But nobody plays like this anymore.
Pupils of Peter Feuchtwanger do:)
Son muy jóvenes y con otros conceptos del mundo: demasiadas máquinas...cel etc❤
Excellent and very unique timing. Really special interpretations.

Один из немногих пианистов,для которых этюды Ф. Шопена,в первую очередь-Музыка,а не способ показа своих технических возможностей.

So much character! Wonderful.
Ach! Etudes become music!
Grabación apasionante y fantástica
Such legatos!
Margulis was the only pianist who could play Chopin Etudes without using pedal.
As a matter of fact, one of the miracles of his 10.2 is in his use of pedal.
@@yoga.ma.genova8591 Agreed, the miracle is that you are hardly conscious of it.
10/2 and 25/7 never heard anything like those before. 25/7 sounds like a two part invention

Unbelievable!! Young generations go back to your teachers and stay there.
