Offshore sailing is a magical time and offers an opportunity to unwind, reflect and enjoy the incredible experience of bobbing on a relatively very tiny piece of fiberglass on the huge magnificent ocean. We are rarely disappointed by mother nature! If its not the sea surprising us, a glimpse up at the night sky usually does the trick.
But often we hear from viewers that they love the idea of sailing but are not at all enamoured in passage making. Well we thought we would spell off some of the mystery. Most of the time passage making in these latitudes is awesome downwind sailing! In this episode we introduce you to some of the basics that go into making an offshore sailing.
This particular passage we were rewarded by a crazy rare sighting from the monsters of the sea! But really we wanted to give you an introduction into some of the small details that go into everyday life when you are bobbing along on the ocean. In this first episode of many we cover some of the very basics.

We've just discovered your channel a few days ago and promptly went right back to the very first video. Almost up to date with the adventures after an epic binge-watch. My goodness what a journey, and what a lovely couple eh! The Moorea bush walk had Amanda on the edge of her seat, shrieking with disbelief. The kids in Fiji had us both smiling like Cheshire cats. We're about two years or so off from selling up and leaving Australia forever on our big trip - we have a major trip around Australia in our trailer sailer to complete first - we have to visit the Kimberley ! Papua is a dream destination for many Aussies. I sooooo hope you make it to Cocos/Keeling. You're probably getting better internet up there off Papua then we do down here in Lake Macquarie. The sailing, diving & fishing in the PNG region must be insane. Hope to see you both on the water one day . . . we'd love to buy you a beer !
Many current sailing channels could benifit by following your lead. By far you guys are one of the best channels and are in my top 5 list.

Great vid! I hooked a young seal the other day with a buzz bomb. It was horrible as I believe I hooked him in mouth as I could totally control him. In a panic though...I cut the line. I was lucky and believe I used a non stainless steel hook. Everyone , pls use non stainless hooks in case of hooking mammals or breaking your line after strikes. It’s good to know that non stainless will rust out quicker.
Great point. On this passage I had two steel hooks get straightened by (what I think) was big yellowfin and marlin. Never want to keep a Marlin. Way too much meat and way to beautiful!
So lovely. Getting the zen vibe at the end. A note too on all those that troll their lures too far out the back of the boat. Boats attract fish, keep your lures close. You’re almost up there with Free Range Sailing as the best sailing channel.

ok....i;m 20 seconds into this video and i want to say how much i love you guys.
my late dad was a farmer...born in 1911....as straight and as normal as you could imagine. he would not start to plough, seed, combine, swath, or do anything to a field on a friday. if he didn't do a tiny bit of it on a thursday night, it wouldn't get started until saturday weather permitting. i've no idea why because he really didn't seem the type to be superstitious.

What an amazing life the two of you are living. I love the oceans and being at sea with no land in site, watching various marine life around the boat. Your boom preventer MUST run from the end of the boom to a very strong point as close as possible to the bow, then back down to the cockpit where it can be released. Tying off to a cleat that is not at or near the bow is dangerous as it multiplies the already large forces involved in an accidental gybe substantially.

I believe you should never have regrets on the path you've traveled in life yet it's OK to have yearnings when you see the paths others are taking. What Ben & Ashley are able to do on Nahoa was not possible when I was their age so I too have been living their journey vicariously, they are ticking off things on my Bucket List I'll never get to experience in real life and appreciate the time they are taking to share their adventure with us. Love them both and wish them fair winds
Yes me as well. I've also have always had this dream since I read "Dove". I'm now almost 60 and have recently had 5bipass heart surgery. And unless I won the lottery big time I'll never be able to do this. And even if did win I haven't the strength anymore, but I thank y'all for sharing your lives the way y'all have. Sorry for hearing the bad things you have gone through and hope everything is ok now. But one day I going to see these places by sail hiking or on my own boat even if I drown in the beautifull ocean. I've seen this episode several times...I'm an ex-owner - operator-trucker..I've seen awesome stuff, but during journey,I had to be on..on,on..not sure what its like,to watch the waves roll by,and chill, en-route,24 hours a day...after all,I could pull over.

Sailing Nahoa, this was a very good Vlog from you, and the element you mention is important to understand. there is another subject you might address too, as you sailing "short-handed"( meaning two people), and the chemistry between you are so good is also an aspect, not everyone goes so well together and that is a factor for longer passage, if you have crew(friends/family) on board, they might not have the experience you have and then it needs to be calculated as a factor, nothing is worse than having people that are afraid, scared, get easy seasick, and people that don't go together under situation like you will experience during a crossing, many feel very comfortable as long as they can see land, but when you only have ocean around and don't have much or less to nothing of experience, things can roll up towards a negative atmosphere on the vessel.
A very good brief before departing so everybody knows what to expect, and also take seasickness medicine just in case if they are not sure if they can take the "new movement", better to be on the safe side than have a bad experience. As it often takes 2-3 days to settle in and getting used to the vessels movements.
One thing is day sailing or 2 days 1-night sails, but an ocean crossing of 2-3 weeks is something totally different. and for some, it might be much more than they anticipated.
But you are making such a good Vlog and its very inspiring to watch, so keep it coming and bets of luck...

My wife and I are really enjoying all your adventures, and we are living vicariously through you (not sure if you realize that, but I'll bet everyone that is subscribed to you is doing the same thing). We've been big fans of your channel for a while, And you are an incredible inspiration to us.
I loved your video about going offshore, and I hope you do that type of "how to" video more often. But I have to admit I have one beef with you that I've been wanted to talk about for a while. As a "man overboard" instructor for the U.S. Power Squadrons, it is driving me crazy how many people, who are sailing around the world and doing TH-cam videos, who don't wear pfd's often enough. And when I saw this video I just had to comment about this because it was so relevant.
I think it would be really interesting if you would consider doing a video on the subject of handling a "man overboard" scenario and how you prepare for it.
I want you (and others watching this channel) to think about this scenario. One of you randomly falls overboard while just off shore. Can the other single-handedly recover you, especially if you are unconscious? Even when the seas are relatively calm, this would probably be a challenge. Please think about that, and after you do, do a video about it.
I learned this lesson the hard way myself, when I accidentally got knocked overboard. I was embarrassed because I am a pretty experienced sailor. But I was lucky. Afterwards, after thinking about different scenarios of what could have happened, now I teach the "man overboard" course to others as much as I can. I've learned that it is extraordinarily difficult to get another back on board, particularly when the person is unconscious. And when it is just the two of you and you are alone, it is damned near impossible. Then think about that same scenario at night and it gets pretty scary pretty quickly.
I also want you to practice falling overboard while tethered and with heavy clothing on. And try to get that on video as well. It would be amazing to see how well you can recover yourself and get yourself back on board while you are sailing in rough seas and/or travelling at a decent clip.
Food for thought.

Faradays cage effect will work with any metal box including the oven , the principal is that current flows on the outside of conductive material. Notice you guys run s d400 wind gen , those things a quiet!
