As a lifelong Biggles officianado, I think you've hit the nail on the head with your review. At the time, I hear the time travel stuff was introduced because it was too expensive to set the film in WW1, (both of the bi-planes were post WW1). But.... the characters were at least retained Biggles, Algy, Ginger and Bertie, and Marie was his official girlfriend (although Biggles was always very non sexual, in fact the only thing in Biggles books that were actually coming were the camels) and of course Von Stalhein was the official "baddie", in a late book Biggles even rescued him from the communists. In retrospect. if they wanted to film an "Indiana Jones" style Biggles (and there were about 40 books that would have fitted the bill), "Biggles Flies West" would have been a corker, it had pirates and everything!

You should’ve pointed out that they only jump when their “time twin” is in danger. The soundtrack is great. It’s also nice to see an 80s London skyline before all the other buildings went up.

Biggles is brilliant! One of my favourites. Fun facts; the docks where Ferguson shoots up the police cars is the same location seen in Hammer's To the Devil A Daughter (which would make a great subject for GoodBad Flicks) and the ruined city was where Kubrick shot a lot of Full Metal Jacket a couple of years later.

I remember trying to record this film on vhs back in the day, I think on Starz. It came on late night a couple times, but the movie right before it was 2001 and I ran out of room on the tape and barely caught the beginning of this.
I tracked this movie down a year or so again and was finally able to watch it. And yeah, it's fun, and Peter Cushing is always a plus!

He's right, though: the Camel's rotary engine caused tremendous torque, which caused the deaths of several airmen who were not used to it. The aircraft Biggles crashes is a Sopwith Pup. That was a handful, too.

This film inspired me to pass my driving test on my third and final attempt (It was work sponsored). Failed on accumulation of minors first time. Second time, a major for a slight roll back on a hill start on a steep ass hill! Watched this film on TV purely by accident on a lazy Sunday afternoon with the missus before my final attempt on the Monday. Passed with flying colours. I’ll always remember this film fondly. It chilled me out and I realised that if this film can get made then I sure as hell can drive a car. Own it on Blu-ray now. This film changed my life and opened doors for me. It’s absolute $hlT to some but to me, it will always be the best!

I never heard about this but the production for all the WWI stuff looks top notch. Peter Cushing looks amazing and I'd probably see it just for him. It looks like it has that 80s wacky adventure film vibe to it that would, yes, appeal to kids.

And of course Biggles would have as a result been familiar with the issue of excessive torque, which he actually comments on in the film explaing how the tail rotor counteracts the torque of the main rotor.

Incidentally Peter Cushing appeared as Colonel Raymond in the music video for 'The Immortals' _No Turning Back_ .

The 'derelict city' is the old Beckton Gasworks in East London, also the setting for Full Metal Jacket's Vietnam scenes. Biggles was a big deal back in 1986 with a lot of publicity but the end result was disappointing as it was meant to kickstart a series of movies. It kind of got overshadowed by Highlander (and its better soundtrack).

This movie reminds me (in a weird way) of Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows".
You are taking a genre series (one a book series, the other a TV series) and adapting them to not only reflect their original material, but also incorporating elements of another genre (magical time travel in Biggles, 70's kitsch in the case of Shadows).
These elements do not jibe with the source material but do serve as commentary on the creatives in charge of the project. In the case of Biggles this reflects the lack of creative direction being that they were shoehorning in elements in an attempt to ride what they saw as a cultural wave to money. Shadows incorporated its 70's elements to evoke Tim Burton's memories and feel toward watching the show back when he was young in the 70's and to put an authorial stamp on the material.
Both are bad in their own ways because of these mish mashing elements, but are interesting to watch for that same reason.

The Twilight Zone movie came out before this movie did so I don't know why that would affect it and the exact cause of the accident from The Twilight Zone was pyrotechnics and a helicopter that was too low.
