I was in high school in Los Angeles when the show was in its prime. I got a job after school and I would spend my paycheck buying clothes in the "Miami Vice" style. I joined the military right after graduating. I arrived to my first duty station in Germany in the middle of the winter and I realized that all I had was a bunch of white blazers, pastel t-shirts, thin pants, and loafers with no socks. I darn near froze my butt off! I wore my uniform clothes as much as I was allowed until I could purchase a whole new wardrobe. Man I loved the late 80's, early 90's and Miami Vice!
Mark, I do too, and I love it. Anybody that doesn't like it can kiss my ass. I went all out with a $1500 white Italian linen suit, tight t-shirts in pink and aqua, and some white Versace espadrilles. I still think it looks sexy as hell.

{Probably a very embarrassing look into my character but here goes} I remember I really got into Miami Vice in my teens, I mean I lived and breathed Miami Vice, had all the episodes on VHS, then replaced them all on DVD later on, had models of the cars like the black Ferrari Daytona and the white Testarossa dotted about in my room, I looked upon Don Johnson as pretty much the ideal man to look up to, to aspire to be and to see as a role model. Slowly but surely I started to adopt some of the style trends that Crocket used to wear, for example before I got hooked on the TV series I used to wear Sneakers, tracksuit bottoms and a sporty T-Shirt with a crew cut hairstyle (Typical fashion trend that most teens in the London area were following), after about season 4 of watching Miami Vice, I was wearing Driving Mocs without socks, Chinos, pale blue or purple high arm T-Shirts (Just wasn't brave enough for the pink), Gold Casio Watch (Gold steel version of the F91W) side parted and grew my hair out Don style. My music taste changed, it was more 80's than the (then) current 90's. The only aspects I didn't adopt was the white clothing (Except for a off white blazer I didn't wear much), I preferred dark blue, black or grey. My parents only realised I had a problem when I kept looking at black 2 seater convertible cars (Like the Mazda MX5) on Exchange & Mart 'Ebay of the day' and asking them if we could go to Miami instead of Spain for our hols. About 15 years later, long after the fad died out and I moved on. I found a photo of my 17 year old self at Goodwood: Festival of speed. It was proper cringe. I was posing next to a White Lambo Countach, wearing the driving mocs, khaki chinos with turnups that made me look like I was at the beach, bright red t-shirt, the gold Casio watch shining in the sun, the fake wayfarer sunglasses and the hair, oh boy the hair. I was trying way to hard and probably used far to much product and hair dryer which made the hair look more Wham! or Lady Diana than the Don. It was funny to look at but in a way, I did look like a young cosplay Crockett but with big hair but glad I didn't peruse that particular look beyond 18 LOL!
Still sounds like your style looked better than today's fads of skinny jeans and the like. I myself adopt toned-down versions of some of Crockett's clothes when summer arrives.
I watched it for the first time a couple of months ago and I have to say I was disappointed. Not what I expected. I love Don Johnson but I enjoyed Nash Bridges much much more than Miami Vice. Miami Vice became boring and repetitive after the first two seasons or so.
Something I never noticed when the show was running is that Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas are the same height. This really enhances their unity as partners.I wonder if it was a conscious decision in the casting.
In the pilot episode script Tubbs is depicted as being younger (mid 20s) than Crockett (35 years old). Both actors though are same age being born in 1949....

Omg, please do! The architecture in Miami Vice played just as important role as the outfits the two detectives were wearing. I mean, they literally gave the city of Miami this iconic pastel colored buildings and aloft atmosphere. I just got myself a white suit ala Crocket and wear blue or pink shirts underneath it and it rocks. You can leave the jacket at home if it’s hot too easily. Round it with some nice shoes and a gold watch and it’s a winner look

I think after Michael Mann saw "Scarface", and got the idea for a TV show about the drug trade in Miami. Minus the hard-core violence, mindless bloodshed, and loads of profanity.
I remember the "no socks" with shoes thing started in 1984 and was popular all the way until about 1988-'89. It died out sometime in spring of 1989, and quickly became seen as cheesy at the start of the 90s, but for roughly 5 years during the 80s that was the style of cool. From 1990 to present "dressing like Miami Vice" became a joke for looking like a corny cliche from another time, but during it's heyday of 1984-1989, especially around 1984-'87, it was THE STYLE of cool.
I was born in 2003 and never seen the show, but managed to dress alike-80s all the way from my childhood. Somebody told me about it, and now i know where to get some more inspiration with less hawaiian shirts and more blazers-n-pants style :)
I was a freshman in college in an East coast medium size school. I remember my first Halloween party and I got there and half the guys there had sport coats with the sleeves rolled up, 4 days beard stubble and no socks. I had no idea about the show and had to catch up. Great times.

Actually the real reason why PMT’s gun is smaller is because he doesn’t like guns. It was kinda explained in an interview with the gun instructor on the show that DJ liked going to practice, but PMT was more hesitant. Heck, even in a behind the scenes photo you can see him making a “😖” at the gun he’s holding

The gun was specially built by hand for the show & was modified to shoot 45 cal blanks because there were no blanks available for the 10mm auto caliber, as it was a brand new caliber that had just come to the market in 1982 or 1983, before Miami Vice started. The Bren Ten was only in commercial production from 1983 to 1986, when the company, Dornaus & Dixon went bankrupt & out of business.
i was dressing like don johnson before the show was on tv.i had 76 280z and my best friend was from brazil and he was brown....i think some writer saw my friend and i driving around and decided to write a story based on our look..ha ha ha lol...i wore the stubble cause razors were too expensive...i wore rubber sole shoes because they were comfortable...i wore loose pants in case i got into a fight.
These fashion were copied from Japanese 1975 two detective show called Oretachi no Kunshō. those guy are the one wear those linen suit with t-shirt and white shoes, double breast suit. people who loves Miami Vice then should look for this detective drama "Oretachi no Kunshō".
Japan has always been the forefront of fashion. Just they don't host fashion weeks. The idea of men carrying leather totes and handbags came from Japan. It's there a decade ago and now in 2023 autumn fashion we see houses from Milan, Paris and NY showing it off.
Will have to check that out! Only one photo online and they're both just wearing suits and doesn't look anything like what Crocket and Tubbs wore. Will have to find out how to see the actual show.

Michael Mann's Miami Vice seasons 1 and 2 was the definitive Vice, all changed for the worst when Dick Wolf took over in season 3, the pastels were gone, the vibe, the style, the cool music, Sonny's great look, the Daytona.

I remember the "no socks" with shoes thing started in 1984 and was popular all the way until about 1988-'89. It died out sometime in spring of 1989, and quickly became seen as cheesy at the start of the 90s, but for roughly 5 years during the 80s that was the style of cool. From 1990 to present "dressing like Miami Vice" became a joke for looking like a corny cliche from another time, but during it's heyday of 1984-1989, especially around 1984-'87, it was THE STYLE of cool.
I was born in 2003 and never seen the show, but managed to dress alike-80s all the way from my childhood. Somebody told me about it, and now i know where to get some more inspiration with less hawaiian shirts and more blazers-n-pants style :)
I was a freshman in college in an East coast medium size school. I remember my first Halloween party and I got there and half the guys there had sport coats with the sleeves rolled up, 4 days beard stubble and no socks. I had no idea about the show and had to catch up. Great times.

@@heroesandicons425 You could start to feel the 80s slowly "going out of style" during the second half of 1988. I mean it was still cool, even into 1989, but whole thing was on it's way out. By 1992 or 1993 it was pretty much gone.

Actually the real reason why PMT’s gun is smaller is because he doesn’t like guns. It was kinda explained in an interview with the gun instructor on the show that DJ liked going to practice, but PMT was more hesitant. Heck, even in a behind the scenes photo you can see him making a “😖” at the gun he’s holding

The gun was specially built by hand for the show & was modified to shoot 45 cal blanks because there were no blanks available for the 10mm auto caliber, as it was a brand new caliber that had just come to the market in 1982 or 1983, before Miami Vice started. The Bren Ten was only in commercial production from 1983 to 1986, when the company, Dornaus & Dixon went bankrupt & out of business.
i was dressing like don johnson before the show was on tv.i had 76 280z and my best friend was from brazil and he was brown....i think some writer saw my friend and i driving around and decided to write a story based on our look..ha ha ha lol...i wore the stubble cause razors were too expensive...i wore rubber sole shoes because they were comfortable...i wore loose pants in case i got into a fight.

Japan has always been the forefront of fashion. Just they don't host fashion weeks.
The idea of men carrying leather totes and handbags came from Japan. It's there a decade ago and now in 2023 autumn fashion we see houses from Milan, Paris and NY showing it off.
