A lovely design, and I wholly support the idea of retiring a design you no longer feel excited by - you're not running a factory after all, and what you are excited about making is ultimately what draws people to your work. It was also really fascinating to see you in this rapid production mode for such an early batch of a design - despite your claims of being unused to the design, the speed at which you throw is staggering, and the precision clearly doesn't suffer whatsoever. Very much looking forward to seeing how these end up looking when glazed. Also, at first I thought the tall foot would make them (visually if not practically) unstable, but looking at the finished form at the end here those fears were easily put to bed. Beautifully proportioned and stunningly harmonious despite the unusually high foot for a bowl. Great work!
I love the updated shape! As for retiring old shapes, I don't feel there is any single correct answer - in my mind it's what feels right, what excites you, what would make you want to turn more bowls or whatever other pieces you make. Art and creation is just that in my mind, so retiring the old and carrying on with the new is great choice!
It’s a beautiful design but as a bowl lover myself, the taller and narrower foot gives me a sense of unease as it moves the center of mass higher and makes it less stable. When I have hot liquid in the bowl, I definitely don’t want the bowl to feel like it can be a risk of tipping if someone nudges the table wrong. And as someone of East Asian heritage, when I have a rice dish in a bowl, I often pick up the bowl with some part of my hand (often times my palm) on the foot to get the bowl closer to my mouth for a good scoop. I’d only see that the tall and narrow foot would make this awkward. Then again, maybe it can be argued that this is not the intended foods for the bowl.
I agree. It's beautiful, but once filled, it may be impractical to actually eat out of. A vase can be appreciated for its own form, but a bowl should be, first and foremost, utilitarian.
Change is good and the evolution of your own style is important as an artist. I like the new shape and am curious to see how they glaze. I am enjoying reading your book and always enjoy your videos.

I love the idea of having a set of shapes you make. That's what I'm trying to build now too. My only critique is the foot seems too high. Definitely fits the aesthetic of your collection though. Maybe I'm just a sucker for smaller foot rings on bowls.
I really quite like the old forms with the crisp line around the foot ring. But I also can appreciate why you want to change it up to fit in with the rest of your style. The new ones look great!
It’s a beauty. In my small studio, I only ever make 10 of one pot at a time. Next session I start something new. I couldn’t imagine making the same pot over and over. Reinventing your pots is half the fun!
I love them. The shape looks much more in line with your aesthetic than the wide shallow form of the old bowl. As an added bonus, it looks more practical as well. I was worried when you said that you wanted a taller foot than the first prototype. I thought anything taller might look like it was on stilts. But once it was trimmed I found it very attractive. I agree that a smaller maker's mark and therefore more narrow walls to the foot would be an improvement. Overall they look beautiful, I can't wait to see them glazed and fired!
i love the new shape! it definitely strikes me as more sculptural/decorative than a bowl i'd want to eat out of - i can just imagine one or maybe a series of them arranged on a mantle. i think 'retiring' a form is great and even a healthy thing for an artist to do - as skills, artistry, and tastes develop it's good to keep active and check in with how your work is satisfying your own interests

Love the "bowl-ness" of the new one. And I gravitate toward a tall narrow foot on anything. The "surprise" of the angularity of the outside versus the perfect curve on the inside is so successful. I would eat my porridge out of one of these any day! And of course I watched to the end of the video. I highly appreciate the specificity around your trimming moves. Very very helpful. I was lucky enough to be pointed to FG's videos early on. As someone then (and arguably still) very new to the wheel, I have learned something every time I view them -- and learned when reviewing them again, in light of trying out the techniques in real life, realizing I didn't quite get all of it. I fully support your desire to venture into new but also evolved shapes. Composing, writing and even research techniques evolve in my experience. A craft should not be understood as a goal or a fixed point along a route but walking the route towards something
My mother would like these beautiful bowls, she prefers wide deep bowls whilst I prefer shallow bowls with wide flat rims. They do feel more your style, and retiring something old is not a bad thing if you aren't feeling it. The small clips about a tool that you use is really interesting.
I have a definite opinion. You are an artist. Your forms should excite you. Always reach out for more versatility. Always challenge yourself. Always find the joy in making and then your customers will also experience joy from what you've made.
The shape is beautiful, the tall foot makes 'a bowl' look elegant. You were wondering if the food would hold it temperature, in my case the bowl is so delicate in looks I'd either forget to eat and just stare at the bowl or worry I'd be to clumsy and manhandle it incorrectly haha. I can see how the new shape fits into your current line of work, but I can't help but see them as upside-down shades from a 70's-style Vemco drafter's lamp.
Looking at the untrimmed bowl I thought to myself "I would trim this a totally different way" which gave me a video idea. If you were to want to do a collab video with another potter, you could each throw something like 6 bowls each. Then you would switch three of your bowls with the other person and trim all 6 of them. I think it'd be interesting to see how much trimming really shapes a bowl and it would show off the styles of each potter :)

Tall foot may be elegant but might be more unstable. I prefer the first model.... because you can stack more of them on the top of each other in the cupboard. ant they are wider. Cheers.

I love this bowl. Wonder how your Ramen bowl collab helped in imagining this new form. Weight at the bottom is important for stability and the hollow will be a tactile experience for the user- consider keeping the walls as thick as you have them in the video. Cheers

Florian ive been quite inspired by a lot of your work but i am curious if you have ever expirimented with marbling clays. Ive found at least in my opinion that the marbling of high iron clays and porcelain clays make for beautiful combinations of swirls and textures with subtitles that fit your simplistic style. I think that your glazes might also fight a barbles clay particularly well because of how the high iron will change the glaze to something different than the porcelain will give. While i use mostly clear glazes on my works im curious if you have and or will try marbling clays and even possibly selling them. If you want some reference photos from my works Id be happy to send some. -Thank you for your time and wonderful inspiration.
With the angular shape, the walls are now of varying thickness. Are you concerned whether that presents any issues in both the drying and glazing stages?
I reall love the new bowl and I think they fit you better but I think in the future in like make 2 or 3 years you could make original bowl batches for fun and I bet they would sell

Thinking about retiring acform indicates a loss of interest in turning the particular shape. Boredom is not conducive to creativity, unlike restlessness to do something new. Regarding the taller shape, it is different. I like your older shape better. A simple case of personal preferences 😊
I’m sorta new to ceramics and I don’t gas fire so I might be a tad confused but how do you glaze so fair down I always have to leave quite a lot of bare clay incase of dripping
retiring a shape thats boring for you to make should never be controversial! make new, fun things! experimentation is life i love the angular profile of the new bowls, but the very high final foot proportions does make them look a bit like an industrial funnel. of course, i'm hardly qualified to have an opinion on art in the flrst place.

You might need one of those magnifying glasses for watchmakers when making the F of your stamp for these bowls 😅. The shape definitely looks you.

It has to do with his glazes. They don't flow as mush while firering as whatever you're using.
