      It's hard to admit but the project failed. Miserably! Not only does it not collect plastic it also is way to stiff and even breakers apart after a few weeks. And all this after an unbelievable amount of simulations and prototyping. What the team is really really good is selling us the dream that we can save the world without changing our way of live. The message is so nice: All will be good! As long as jung, smart and beautiful people work together for one goal! The reality sadly is much darker...

      @AshLeeeeee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@AlexanderWunschik yeah, the reality is much darker, but with how unforgiving the ocean is, I'm not surprised the system lasted as long as it did. It's been way less than a decade's worth of work. Let these guys work it out.
      Anyone who ever prototyped something knows the frustration of the first model failure.

    • @AlexanderWunschik
      @AlexanderWunschik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AshLeeeeee The sad thing is this was not a prototype. They already had multiple prototypes, even in rough sea. This should have been it: The first of many productive systems. They already spend millions and millions not to build this one system, but to simulate and test the concept. Now that it has failed they must start from the beginning and I'm not sure they have funding for that.

      @@AlexanderWunschik sure they have someone for that, they wouldn't necessarily have to make video out their failure and just keep communication to a minimum if they would want to hide their failure. It would be a failure in my eyes if they didnt report on it and have efforts to improve it. Woudnt you think?

    • @AlexanderWunschik
      @AlexanderWunschik 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@DavId-qz4ej Stop communication is not an option. They can't keep it secret that they had to tow-in there first, long awaited system in broken parts.
      The best thing they now can do is professional crisis communication: Confess (only) the mistakes/problems you can't deny. Make sure you communicated that you've learned something and all will be good soon. - That's exactly what this video was about.
      The main message from this and the last video was: "The system is installed but it is not able to collect garbage - and we have no idea why". That is why they still run tests even on the productive system that should already collect tons of plastic.

      @@DavId-qz4ej There is no other way to communicate failure if you are afraid of loosing funding and community support. I'm not even sure the realized there failure yet. Maybe they never will. Boyan is still communication over Twitter, that one single little engineering problem is enough to fail a system but it seams to me in reality the whole system is not functional. I'm sure the will loose funding soon and then we will see how they communicate that.

      Nobody went into outer space in the 1960s
      It was just a political fraud that they had to proport in order to have some consensus among the United States population that they were doing better than the Russians because Russia had put Sputnik in space again on man is just a device a satellite that was in orbit
      And the United States had to one-up over the Russians over the Sputnik so the Americans claimed that they not only put satellites into orbit but the United States also claim that it had put a human into orbit even before doing test with animals like dogs and monkeys and then the CIA needed to one up over that because United States has always wanted to claim World dominance and Global dominance especially after the success of World War II so now the United States had to say that not only it could reach the moon and orbit the Moon but it could land on the moon and walk around on the moon which is technically impossible with 1960s technology.
      Even by today's standards the Israelis just launched their Beresheet mission to the Moon, because Israel wanted to also claim that it had enough technology to land on the moon and this satellite was launched from California on a SpaceX rocket supposedly okay and one of the concerns that the Israeli scientist had was that once they landed on the moon when the surface of the Moon is facing the Sun the temperature on the moon is going to be so hot that it's going to degrade and destroy the electronics inside the little Moon probe and this is claimed just days ago by the Israeli scientist.
      So how exactly are you going to thermally protected human being on the moon exposed to very high temperatures of heat near what you would see inside your oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit or maybe higher and in the shade the temperature drops down to the temperatures you have in Antarctica which is -150 degrees Fahrenheit how are you going to create a suit to walk around in and a cooling system and a heating system for a human being that is adequate enough for a 500 degree Fahrenheit spread we just don't have technology like that even on Earth it's either one or the other but not both.
      So you need to do some research you need to find out what the reasons were for why the United States made such claims and before you start to contradict people's comments maybe those people know more than you okay so go do your research find out the truth it was a political gesture by John Kennedy to say that we were going to the Moon it was political it had nothing to do with technology.
      The other reason why NASA was created had again nothing to do with scientific value of going into outer space it was because they needed a politically correct and plausible deniability reason for them to build large Rockets but those Rockets really were intended to carry icbm's and nuclear bombs to blow up Russia in case there was a nuclear war with Russia they were trying to figure out how large of a rocket would you need for these large payloads and as technology improved the nuclear bombs became smaller because their efficiency had gone up so the Rockets could become smaller since the weight of the payload became smaller ultimately with that new technology they were able to put icbm's on submarines and that's why now we have nuclear submarines.

    Wouldn't it be better and easier to do this at the mouth of rivers where most of the plastic comes from in the first place?

    • @SamRommer
      @SamRommer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MakeMeThinkAgain definitely a good idea for another project. The ocean cleanup’s goal is to clean up the plastic in the great Pacific garbage patch.

    • @MakeMeThinkAgain
      @MakeMeThinkAgain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@SamRommer The problem I see is that cleaning the garbage patches is an impossible task while reducing the amount of new plastic going into the patches is an easier task. You want to stop the leak before you start cleaning up the spill -- this project is going about it the wrong way.

    • @ohokcool
      @ohokcool 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MakeMeThinkAgain besides that, this is a poor design and I could see what was wrong with it in 5 minutes whereas these scientists are wasting tons of cash on film production and expensive dyes for current analysis. I simply cannot believe they didn’t think of putting some kind of fence on the thing to account for waves and plastic buildup.

    • @MakeMeThinkAgain
      @MakeMeThinkAgain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ohokcool Still quite fond of my leak analogy. If you think mopping up the water before you stop the leak is a good idea, it goes without saying that you will not put that much thought into the best way to mop up, either.
      The other question is what do they propose to do with the plastic they collect. They may have covered this, I kind of lost interest when I realized it was such a waste of time and resources.

    • @IHateGoogle6969
      @IHateGoogle6969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MakeMeThinkAgain There are thousands of rivers that lead to the ocean, but far fewer points where oceanic currents concentrate. It's not feasible to cover every river opening. Besides, if you actually paid attention, you would have realised this is just a test to develop a better solution.
