  • Part of the Ballan parkway OO gauge layout cement works project. For the giant chimney stack. By experimenting have now constructed a D.I.Y. working smoke generator using a 12v Airpump, E - Cigarette and various bits and bobs. The video expains how this was achieved.

We need these in our steam engines!

th-cam.com/video/qF3IP9AQ_iQ/w-d-xo.html I have been experimenting with positive pressure smokers for use on model boats where the exhausts are close to the waterline where waves can hit. Both disco fog and SR-24 smoke oil were used.
One of the difficulties was the noise generated by the membrane pumps used, which can also be observed in the video. Another was being able to direct the air flow from the pump to cool the heating coil. I had to build a wide nozzle to solve this problem.
In both cases, the smoke was generated by a heating coil made of a power resistor wrapped around a wick.

Seuthe is pronounced “Soyter”! On good authority - from a German! Cheers, Happy New Year.

Looks great! Perhaps a cheap timer circuit from eBay could be added into the circuit to automatically put it on and off in blasts?

Wow! I wouldn't have even dreamed of using an e cig for the smoke. Well done and your layout is very realistic. Can't wait to see what's next for Ballan parkway.

Thanks. The layout is a bit of a mess a the moment. Lots of individual projects on the go. I think i need a huge tidy up!

If you want the smoke to come out more and without the noise of the pump, have a look at "glin lner 1946". He has made his own smoke generator machine for his engine shed.

You could maybe wire that to a esc in an rc car would only smoke when throttle applied after all the pump is just a dc motor. Just saw some guys wandering if would work for the variable speeds of an engine ahh might work out ok

That’s cool! This is the problem with all smoke generators is constant smoke. No engine blows smoke constantly. I’ve got a couple ideas that might work. All the burping systems are too loud and don’t produce enough smoke.

Great Idea Dave, and the smoke is just enough. which has made the chimney very realistic, thanks for sharing regards Tony

Try adding a small computer fan to the mix to get the smoke higher... throttle it if its too much air

Try three or four of your smokers to run in sequence for a constant smog (raspberry flavour) !

Great idea, came up with something similar myself. Could I reccomend using a reusable cigarette core with a refillable tank, that way you could load VG without nicotine so kids can be around it instead of having nic in the air all the time

I can only do short bursts of smoke with the E Cig. I have seen someone using incense sticks. Though it could be a fire 🔥 hazard if left unattended?

Can you use the smoke fluid from the halloween smoke makers?

It does look good and when we were looking for realistic smoke on our club exhibition layout we did look at E-cigs, but as you say they can;t run for long periods of time and we didn't want the nasty chemicals. In the end I cam up with using a mini humidifier and the results are great. It ran at our recent exhibition for around 10 hours none stop on both days and it only uses water vapour.

I would think that water vapor around the layout would be bad. I've always seen people try to keep the humidity down in the layout room by running dehumidifiers. Warped track, unsticking glue, rust, ect. could be an outcome. Safer I would think to stay away from humidifiers.

    you can use umidificator machine

    • @williambryant5946
      @williambryant5946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

That would probably be bad because it makes water vapor and water and model trains don't mix too good. I'd say don't do that.
