      Once in the corner, the bard whispers
      "I know you're reluctant to trust us, and I sympathize. However, if you don't tell us what we know, I swear to all.the gods that that tiefling witch in our group over there is gonna make sure that the only use your pecker is gonna get is as an offering to Malcanthet! Use shadow lore to make someone think you know their deepest darkest secret, use detect thoughts to actually learn their deepest darkest secret, use modify memory to make them forget you read their mind, when shadow lore wears off let them know why they held you in such fear by reminding them you do in fact know their deepest darkest secret, they aren't under your direct control anymore but you will still have some influence over them. Shadow Lore can be crazy powerful if used cleverly on the right people.

    My College of Whispers Bard pulled a heist in my campaign all solo. He is a Tiefling that wanted to steal a telescope to prepare for a future, larger heist. The store fortunately was also the only one selling "Coal glasses" (Sunglasses, meant to protect from bright lights.)
    The proprietor agreed to my Tiefling "testing" the glasses. He placed them on and did Pyrokinetics, the effect that causes creatures to go blind - For one Round -. Since he was wearing the glasses, he did not go blind and started series of apologies towards the shop-owner, claiming that he thought that the owners glasses were similar. And during that one turn, he had snatched and stored the telescope safely to his person before leaving the store.
    Easy 1,000gp - Although my character won't dare to approach that area of the city anytime soon!

    Whispers bard with aberrant mind sorcerer sounds like a total blast of a character. Concentrate on shadow blade for good damage and meshes well with the psychic damage you deal with the whispers abilities. So many combos to use with the mind abilities of the aberrant mind and the rp abilities of the whispers bard.

    One interesting interaction I came across when looking into multiclassing was with Soulknife Rogue. Their level 3 Psionic Power: Psychic Whispers allows them to establish telepathic communication with up to their proficiency bonus (PB) in creatures, roll a psionic energy die, and have that communication for that die's number of hours. Since the communication only works between the rogue and the other creature, you could be considered "alone" with them, even if you've also established communication with other party members. You don't have to share a language, you don't use a psionic energy die the first time per day, you get PBx2 psionic energy dice to play with so it still scales as you're gaining Bard levels, and you can use the Words of Terror to make the target afraid of another creature of your choice, if you wish. This can be handy for other things like making the king afraid of his advisers, making a captor afraid of their partner, etc.

      It depends on what type of game you’re playing like all other character concepts. I find a lot of builds kinda based on first combats of the day scenarios, so in games where your dungeon crawling and you can’t rest often those builds tend to not be as optimal as more resource conservative builds. • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with the common resistance of frightened particularly is because there are so much undead in the monster manual. Then followed by fiends. I get it I really do. The lesson to take away is always be aware of the campaign your about to begin.
      Asking your DM’s if focusing on these abilities is going to be significantly harder than if you were going a different rout. Personally I’ll take a knife to a gun fight on this one. I love the fear conditions I’ll risk it resistances or not

    • @horseblinderson4747
      @horseblinderson4747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah but other than it simply didn't work it's essentially a zero risk proposition.
      At that you really should be rushing to a 20/22 + stat in charisma as a bard. One of the very few classes that it pays actual dividends to do so. You get an additional inspiration every even number & this class has something to actually contribute through their greeding their own resource that comes back on a short rest anyway.
      So you pass out 2 or three d6's or 8's just to make people feel wanted but at the end of the day you'll make more bacon burning down an enemy with this.

      @forfaerghus8092 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@horseblinderson4747 I'm not referring to Psychic Blades. That is in my opinion the subclasses' greatest asset. Absolutely use your Psychic Blades. I've briefly played a halfling bard who went College of Whispers. I used Psychic Blades to help us kill a witch/hag creature that was resistant to normal weapon damage, since buffing an ally's attack roll would be pointless and boosting a save is just playing defensive. The DM hadn't expected that and we got a crystal ball out of it. Unfortunately, the game petered out due to scheduling, but I'd LOVE to play College of Whispers again on some other character. Maybe on a drow from Menzoberranzan or a yuan-ti or a tiefling. Or maybe just another halfling again! Who knows.

    People also make the mistake of comparing it to other bards when it can fill an entirely different role and should rather be compared to sth like a rogue.
    Plus the "finite resource" argument that you often hear, which doesn't really apply imo. You should get at least one short rest a day and can sneak in another with Catnap.
    That's 15 guaranteed "sneak attacks" per day. Sounds pretty powerful to me. And that's just the combat side of things. You can still revive dead PCs, Identify objects and do all that other fun stuff.
    You can also Animate Objects and summon a Spirit Weapon, dealing over 100 dmg per turn (before AC and crits, at high levels; at 10 it's probably around half that) alongside your normal attacks + bardic sneak attack.
    Or go crit fishing early on with a single dip in Hexblade (also adds Booming Blade) and Faerie Fire/Greater Invisibility (giving you 40% crit each turn).
    And when it comes to arguments like "bards can already disguise themselves" and the like, well, yeah but you can do it better. Same reason why going Changeling has its advantages, too.
    You could be good at everything like bards generally are but why not be the best possible at this thing while still being good at most of the rest, if you choose to.

    I think you are off about the power of Bardic Inspiration. While I accept a whispers bard should use their inspirations for psychic daggers whenever they want, Bardic inspiration is one of the most powerful abilities in the game. You can't compare it to guidance and just kinda shrug. Guidance is a touch spell, only works on skill checks and if used in combat, requires a full action. You are correct that using a bardic inspiration for an attack roll for a single barbarian hit is maybe not the best. However, for a Paladin going for a 5th level smite to put a dangerous boss down, it's amazing. Also, adding a d6/8/10/12 to a saving throw is insanely powerful, especially if that saving throw is against a spell that will devastate the party. Whisper bard multi classed with a Raven Queen Warlock is the most insanely dangerous infiltrator I can think of. Mask of many faces plus psychic blades...offt.

    • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not trying to take that away from the bard in anyway. My point about bardic inspiration is that it shackles you to give it out to everyone. Which yes it can and often dose provide a great buff, but if I have different abilities that use bardic inspiration as a resource and I never get to use it cus all I do is use it on allies, it’s just not fun for me. I want people to know you can just use it your self. For what ever reason. Is it strong yes but it still can fail. I just want to let the people out there know it’s ok to not always buff someone.

      @@TheSinisterheroes Anyone who has played a Lore bard already knows this and will have used cutting words to save themselves AND their allies. you only have to look at the Bard spell list to realize they are not designed to be the damage dealers of a party. You can play a Bard that way of course but you'd weakening your party by doing so. Bards are amazing at crowd control, buffs and debuffs and are the best counter spellers in the game. In any case, I respect your point of view but I think it's not a new idea, just a bit of a bad one.

      Smite can similarly be saved for hits btw, and you're rarely ever going to have a situation where your paladin gets any benefit from the inspiration (for the purpose of getting in a smite on their turn). Giving dies out to clerics or people concentrating on stuff, though, is definitely the call
      And generally speaking, prolly get more DPR from just using the psychic damage instead of helping people hit their attacks. Hitting isn't exactly hard. So after you've got your VIPs their saving throw dies, just go for the psychic dmg

    • @conflictdiamonds
      @conflictdiamonds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jordanf00 I disagree. If you have a Paladin in the party, chances are they are tanking which means they are likely going to be pulling a lot of aggro. The longer the fight goes on the more dangerous it gets for everyone. A Bardic inspiration so the Paladin can smite a dangerous wizard/assassin out of the fight is clutch. Sometimes you don't want a fight going another round and you need that hit to land.
