  • In this video, we'll cover a practice session I recorded on October 23rd, 2021 with some commentary over it discussing why I do things the way I do and what I'm trying to accomplish. I hope this is helpful to you in your practicing journey!

    Great stuff Ryan. I'm a "comeback" player after being a military musician, and this believe it or not is what I struggled with - after getting my lip in of course. Technique, knowing how to practice, and mental ability to focus on the dots is huge. I play Solo Cornet in a Brass Band now and this keeps me on my toes.

      I've struggled with the same things.. which is why I care so much about it now! Thanks for watching!

    Great stuff as always, Ryan. What you call 'mental practice' I call playing 'air trumpet'.

      Thanks Peter. I figured I wasn't the only one who used air patterns in their practice! Calling it mental rehearsal helps me get in the mindset that I'm practicing all the habits I want when I play. I think of being closely related to visualization, for the reasons that visualization has been shown to be useful in learning.

      Absolutely, thank you for the comment! It’s hard work, and can be confusing/frustrating at times, but it’s worth it. Over time, things start to click.

    This is all great, I really liked the video. Where can we buy the t-shirt? You should have an affiliate link in here. Mario is the best.

    Your horn looks sick bro, is that a custom copper bell 229 or something? Rings real nice. These etudes seem really hard and your approach is really well thought out, thanks!

      It's a silver bell that's pretty dirty :). Bach 239.

    ryan. im trying to be more effiecent when i practice. lets say im working on arban 19 and working strictly for clarity and positive playing habits. i start super slow at qn = 50 and my goal would be lets say 120. now my old way of getting consistency is to either play it 3 times or 10 times at the same tempo then increasing the tempo by 5 until i reach my goal tempo, thus, i would end up playing the exercise 20+ times before i reach my goal depending on the difficulty. i usually repeat most things that arent strong in my playing 3 times because that sets a solid base in my opinion. when i saw you doing just one rep and then increasing tempo, it made me qeustion my effeicney in the practice room and why i feel stuck in reaching my goals. as barbara butler says, repepat "the once", once you have achieved your desired result, Once, would you repeat it at the same tempo or increase by 4 (1.04) percent? im trying to get a grasp on your concepts presented on your channel. Thanks. so you would play the exercise once then increase tempo that same day until you reach your daily goal and continue to push until you hit your overall goal. Thanks.

      for me i see repetitions as a time to repeat exactly the desired result at the same tempo, the question i ask is, why should that repition be executed at a faster tempo? just trying to get an understanding here.

    • @user-rn1lb8sx2c
      @user-rn1lb8sx2c 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      and then it goes back to being efficient with your time, asking the question, is that extra repitition at the same tempo really neccessary? or whats stopping me from executing my desired result at a faster tempo?

    • @user-rn1lb8sx2c
      @user-rn1lb8sx2c 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      but then, i also see those repitions as creating consistancy, like if i were working on a slurred scale at qn = 60, the goal is for every sing through every note, eand im strictly working that, and not for speed. would you agree for 3 repititons on something like this?

    • @user-rn1lb8sx2c
      @user-rn1lb8sx2c 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think ive been creating some negative effiecencies in my practice. you mention how you missed a note your two. with me i would then set the mentronome back to the even slower tempo, then what usually happens if im not consistent, is then i keeping missing the notes at the slower tempo, so it goes back into a rabbit hole until im back to the starting tempo and build it all back again. in my eyes, all for consistency,

      sorry for the abundance of questions. some of these are being asked during the video and not after.

    I am hoping you could respond to a question. I have been reading some reddit posts where pro players say they practice 4-8 hrs a day.?? This doesn't make sense to me, since my teacher told me if he practices 3 hrs a day he is wiped. I suffered from over practicing in the past and I am comeback player. what would a reasonable amount of practice be for a comeback guy be? i.e. how much actual lip time would be best to improve as fast as possible but not become over tired. right now I'm doing about 1/2 hr of lip time maybe a bit more over the day and limit my range to about an F or G on the staff, and use those notes sparingly.

    • @RyanBeachtrumpet
      @RyanBeachtrumpet  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t think 4-8 hours a day makes any sense for pretty much anyone. 30 mins is certainly reasonable for a come back player, with a goal of building up to 60 or so mins.

      @@RyanBeachtrumpet Thanks Ryan! response is appreciated. I think Ill aim for an hour. I am getting better everyday.
