Cool video. The only thing - ballistae were not nearly that effective at long range. Also, Egyptian army was Hellenistic, was in late Greek armor and nearly one third of it were actually Roman mercenaries, former Roman soldiers in fact. Caesar was aided not only by Mithridates but also by Herod and by Publius Sittius, Caesar's old friend, a Roman adventurist who commanded his own large private army in Africa

Imagine you being at front lines...
I don't think whoever facing the onslaught of war elephants charging would survive to tell how scary it was. As you can't do anything to it but you know it can easily kill you.
Logically, those on frontlines were supposed to be the cannon fodders and definitely, valuable troops would never be deployed at locations to meet pointless deaths.
Doesn't matter how heavily armored or how skillful you are, the enemies would find ways to kill you if you are closest to them as you are immediate threats.
I think their centurians drilled the troops to get unspoken mentality that, as long as someone was in front of you, you got high chance of surviving so.. you should never let those in front of you to turn back and run pass you. Block his way and keep pushing someone in front of you.
    Dam depressing thoughts...
