I appreciate how Gillan (and rest of band) avoid answering how they feel about their reunion being considered one of the best of 1984. When Gillan says "that is a shallow question" he means that this lineup's decision to reunite is unique to them and other acts that decided to reform in the same year is purely coincidental and has no bearing on how Purple MkII sees itself. The collective musicianship of these four guys (even with Blackmore absent) is second to none.

They sound so defensive here. I suppose they are aware they will never make music again that was as cutting edge as when they formed. That is true for most great bands. They still produced great music which I’m still playing regularly 36 years later.
Their new album Whoosh! is their 3rd album in a row to go to No 1 in Germany. It’s charted high in all major countries and is one of the best of their career .... just 52 years on from when it all began in 1968.
Whoosh! How time flies as humanity heads towards yet another global catastrophe.

Gillan completely misunderstood the question about how it feels to have influenced modern bands, from being drunk/high. He thought the guy was asking about recent bands who influence their music.
And Paice just gets drunker by the second. Just standing there with a silly grin. :)
