  • Are you thinking about doing an MBA? After a couple of years into your career as a young professional, it might be a great time to press the reset button and complete your MBA. According to the new Financial Times Global MBA ranking 2020, Harvard Business School offers the best program in the world, followed by Wharton (University of Pennsylvania), Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) and INSEAD. From the perspective of an INSEAD MBA, I reflect on my MBA experience and offer reasons why you should and should not do an MBA. I am also discussing why it might make sense to do an MBA as a business undergraduate. If you are thinking about applying for an MBA, watch this video first! It covers key differences among MBA programs and what the return on investment of MBA programs is.

    Thank you, Heinrich, for sharing your thoughts on the MBA. I also had a similar experience when i did my international MBA full time from the USA from Chapman school of business Florida. I think this is one of the best times to learn network and open yourself with people from different cultures, different backgrounds, and industries. I did my MBA after doing my MS in computer engineering from Syracuse University in New York and after doing my first masters I realized that if I have to move into management consulting strategy consulting technology consulting I need to have MBA. It is a gateway to another world whereas you rightly suggested can help you transition sector, geographies and functions. I definitely feel anyone who is looking for fast-paced dynamic environment must consider this MBA for global roles and global opportunities. Thank you again. Take care

    Great video man, helps a lot. I'm currently in my final year of my engineering degree - and I want to into business. Accumulating two years of work experience is not ideal so I am currently targeting the Masters in Management program that INSEAD offers. While its not an MBA, its the next best option for people without any experience yet and I hope I can get in.

    Thank you for this amazing breakdown of the pros and cons of pursuing an MBA. I’ve been going back and forth about whether to do it for at least 5 years now. But this video has boosted my determination to start preparing seriously for an MBA. After more than 8 years, I quit my job in international development, which is a sector I’m growing increasingly disillusioned with. Between the constant field travel and long working hours at headquarters, I never had time to study for the GMAT. So I never sat for the exam. Now that I’m unemployed, I can focus on studying, while looking for a less stressful job. My main motivation for pursuing an MBA is the opportunity to reboot my career. I no longer want to limit myself to the international development/aid sector and I’m trying to develop expertise in Latin America.

I didn't do the best in my first semester of my bachelor's degree, and it messed my gpa for the rest. If you join consulting / MBB with some years of work experience you should be able to join as experienced hire, depending on your profile also on a post-MBA equivalent role! Doing an MBA can be a good idea as well though :) (though try to do it post-Cov** as the on-campus experience will for sure be better than the remote things that many programs currently do). Best! I had a considerations similar to what you describe. The result was I decided to embark on an MBA, which is part online and part on campus, enabling me to work full-time simultaneously. I'm currently working in consulting and thus I'm used to heavy workloads. I cannot imagine continuing this workload throughout my life, especially not when family comes into consideration. Even though I value all the benefits of an MBA, I recently got doubts whether I'm ambitious enough to pursue a program. From your perspective, do post-MBA jobs reconcile with a demand for less intensive workloads at all?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for your comment and interesting question! Of course, many post MBA roles with the corresponding salaries will require a level of commitment and workload that is above the average of what you might expect. Though I have many friends that started in industry, tech companies etc. While the workload will not be low in these jobs, it is easily much less from what you might know from MBB consulting! :) Best! Heinrich

    Thank you for the insightful video. I am currently in early 30s with over 10 years of experience & feeling stuck/stagnant & thinking about what's next.
    I understand that MBA grads usually go into 3 main areas - Consulting, Financial Services/IB & Tech. I believe the work life balance isn't great in consulting & financial services/IB, MBA grads used to flock here but now are gearing more towards tech (more within the product management area) due to better work life balance & good compensation.
    - What do you think about doing MBA if one doesn't want to get into Consulting or Financial Services?
    - What are some of the other doors MBA opens beside that has good work life balance & pays well?
    - How valuable is doing an MBA to get into tech (product management or otherwise)?
    - What do you think about the different MBA formats: full time vs executive vs part time vs online?
    - What do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science?

    I believe high ranking MBA's could be readjusted for cost of tuition. Harvard and Stanford will always be up there and deservedly so, but I guarantee there are plenty of fantastic programs at a much lower cost! Gone are the days of selecting programs based on reputation alone. Networking has never been easier. Great video!

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Fei, thanks for your comment, great to hear the video is well paced for you! In EMBAs, most people who do these programs are sponsored by employers and they also often have a weekend model where they only spend time on campus on selected weekends. In these settings, probably more difficult to form these lasting bonds, but of course depends on the program details. Best, Heinrich

    Thank you for creating this video.
    I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this:
    - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career.
    - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't).
    Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science
    - I think MS if usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience.
    - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code.
    - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech).
    - My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance.
    Would love to get your thoughts.

      Hi, yes, in general I do think that an EMBA might be an option to transition careers, though it is less established than the regular MBA. Just be realistic what the EMBA can do for you - it might help but this alone will not make it right for you - you need to very actively network and leverage all the opportunities that the MBA provides to you to really make this work. Lots of success to you!! Heinrich

    Hello Heinrich,
    appreciate your content - thanks for sharing your thoughts!
    I am currently planning an academic leave from consulting. Usually the alternatives are: pursuing a MBA or a PhD.
    So what are your thoughts on the PhD Option? It takes even more time to complete (at least 3 years), but it is cheaper and you may build an even bigger professional network.
    From a content point of view, you are allowed to focus deeply on a special field / topic, which might help you to become an export in this area and later „sell“ the expertise to clients. Also the title might be beneficial. What are your thoughts? Can you say something about (former) colleagues from you and their experiences? Thank you.
    Greets
    Robin

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robin,
      Yes, good question. Personally I decided to do both, after the MBA I started a PhD in Germany. As I went back to work shortly after, I worked on it in parallel to my regular job and hope to be able to complete it soon.
      Regarding learnings / networking / overall experience, I believe that the MBA will be the better choice for most people. Of course, this depends on the individual programs you are looking at. Also, if you complete your PhD in a highly technical, sought after field (e.g., self-driving cars, ANN..) this would be a plus. Of course, the PhD is the way to go if you plan to stay in academia.
      Regarding the external reputation in Germany, the MBA still only plays a minor role while PhD is considered much more important (though my impression is that this is declining). From my German colleagues, ~80% chose to do a PhD in their leave, while internationally the vast majority of consultants in leave do an MBA. However, this is also due to the different university systems in e.g., USA and Germany. In USA, regular Master programs as we know them in Germany do barely exist, most people directly work after their undergraduate degree.
      All in all hard to give a definitive answer, there are pros and cons for both options.
      Best, Heinrich

    Great video Heinrich, this was really helpful. I have a question. If you do an mba after mbb consulting and then go back to work for consulting due to your sponsorship clause then how exactly can you use your mba as a “joker card” to transition into another industry or function?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Hashaam, yes, if you are going in with a sponsor and are obliged to return, then of course not easy to change careers via the MBA, sometimes, you can negotiate with the new employer that he will cover (parts of) the cost of you "breaching" the sponsorship agreement (usually you are then forced to pay a certain sum to your old employer), though would not necessarily count on that when going in. Hi Heinrich, thank you for a very thorough video on the topic. I spent the last 10 years building a successful business in Korea, employing over a dozen staff in three locations. With the Covid situation, my business literally collapsed overnight. Despite my setbacks, I take away valuable experiences in business and life. I feel currently stuck, and feel an MBA might be worth pursuing to galvanize my knowledge. However, my particular challenges are the cost, geography, and logistics of doing an MBA. My best option is an online course. If one is considering what factors have to be taken into consideration, and if you had to do an online version which course would you have done? Cheers in Advance

    What are your opinions on pursuing MBA vs a more "specialized" degree like MFin? I've been hearing mixed opinions, some say MBA will help with career progression while MFin is a junior degree, while others say the things you study in MBA might not necessarily be used in real life while MFin can at least teach you more practical matters.
    I'm in managerial accounting. I would like to stay in managerial accounting but take on some more finance-related tasks at work (such as capital structure, long-term investments, liquidity etc).

    I am doing my internship on PWC currently . My plan is to get into consulting .
    What’s your opinion on the subject ?
    From my research CFA, FRM are very good assets,how a MSc in Finance (Lse,ucl,lbs etc) can compare to these certificates ?
    Which is better to pursue? not only from better jobs point of view (networking) but in regards to the amount of knowledge that each one’s delivers in finance department.
    I really hope to see this .
    Thank you for your content .

      Hi, thanks for your comment! Certificates like CFA and FRM (even more niche) are very much tailored to a specific industry. E.g. to get the CFA you need to have a certain numer of years of work experience (believe 4 years) in a qualifying field to get that degree. Compared to that, an MBA or MSc Finance are much more broadly applicable. Therefore first ask yourself what your career goals are for the next years and if in doubt rather go for the broader qualifications :) Best! Heinrich

You work for yourself without anyone telling you that you have to be at work at such-and-such a time. You set your own schedule. With an MBA, you will always have a boss unless you own the company. In order to make more money, you have to have people under you. As an attorney, you make great money without anyone working for you. You are the king/queen.

You will learn lots of relevant courses there, including soft skills (negotiation skills etc.). Many MBAs also offer courses specifically focused on entrepreneurship (how to identify new business models, entrepreneurial finance etc.). Here other people might have a different opinion, but I am sceptical whether courses like that really prepare you well for entrepreneurship. Do you think MBA may be a feasible option for career shift? Or would changing all three dimensions be too big of a stretch?

      Hi Stanislav, thanks for your comment! Yes, I do think that a good MBA can help you to make this career shift happen. Changing all 3 dimensions at once is a stretch for sure, but if this is really what you want to do, I would go for it :) Best! Heinrich

    I think about doing a MBA to use as a joker card, I work at Mckinsey in a non-consulting position and I am feeling stuck here, I want to move function (consulting position) and move geography (Singapore), I do not feel happy working in Brazil with such a low purchasing power.
    Do you think by doing an MBA would be feasible to do this double jump?

    Thanks, Heinrich,
    I am planning to take one from Indonesia (University of Indonesia) and trying to save money now.
    What do you think about other major such as Technology Industry or Magister Management? Is it worth? Why is MBA more expensive compared to other major?

      Hi Fadira, an MBA is just a different type of degree, as it is "post-experience" (i.e. most people will already have worked for 4 years or so). Therefore in my opinion not really comparable to pre-experience Master programs. Best, Heinrich

    Hi Henry, I’m doing my Masters in Management and Technology at the LMU in Munich. What are my chances of getting into MBB? How much impact does would it have considering I don’t speak fluent German!?
    I am currently a working student at one of the big4.

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Usama, unfortunately all larger consulting firms I am aware of require you to speak business-level German (at least for their client-facing roles). This should be similar in most other European countries as well regarding their local language. Best, Heinrich

    Heinrich, would you recommend it I dont have a Business degree. In fact, the opposite, I have a Literature degree and been working in Ecommerce and marketing for 8 years.

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Nicolas, just judging from the degree, yes I would recommend to do that. Actually an MBA will be even more valuable without undergrad Business degree, as for Business majors it will always be a bit of repetition. Best! H

    Is your tuition applied to those international trips, or do you pay for this separately?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  ปีที่แล้ว

      You usually need to pay out of pocket / on top of tuition for any social activities you are pursuing. Definitely worth to budget for this as well before starting an MBA, as this is an integral part of the experience

    Hi Heinrich, good and informational video, but reflected strongly from the side of MBB paid applicant. Taking into considerations the fees, the opportunity costs, the inflation of MBAs and the fact that a lot of courses are now offered online with a certificate from same schools. For a normal MBA applicant who has the bare the cost by himself it's a big loose business. Also in the mass media the MBAs are hardly criticized for e.g. from Elon Musk. The negative trend in the perception has also to be considered for the future applicants. All in all , in case your company pays for it, you right its almost a no brainer and welcome change, in case you have to bear the cost by yourself it makes less sense. Otherwise you sitting in class with a lot of paid MBBs attendees worrying how to pay back the credit.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Can very much see where you are coming from and yes, there is some truth to that. I have seen lots of non-sponsored peers who made back their investment afterwards via an accelerated career (e.g., jump from Big 4 to MBB consulting), though this for sure did not work out for everyone. Definitely correct to critically ask yourself whether it will be worth it. Best! Heinrich

    How about if your are 32 by the time of starting the MBA, would you still apply? Did you have many classmates that were 30+?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jaime, yes, 32 is for sure not too old for an MBA! At INSEAD, the average of people was around 30. US programs are often slightly younger on average, but trust 32 will still be OK. Best! Heinrich

    if i have master in general management, do you think MBA is still adding value to do ?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jan, depends on your goals for the MBA / why you are doing it. In terms of contents, you will learn new things but there will also be some repetition (especially if your Bachelor is in Business as well). Therefore I do think that the value is higher for non-Business graduates, but I still took a lot away from it (indeed discussed many of the things in the video).. Hope this helps. Best! Heinrich

    Would you recommend an MBA if someone wants to start a startup?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Philipp, of course depends on the individual circumstances, but in general I do not think that the MBA is the right way to go to prepare for launching a startup. In my humble opinion, even though MBAs often have lots of courses on entrepreneurship, there is no better way to learn it than actually doing it. However, if you are still looking for a founding team, your MBA classmates might be great for that! In addition, during an MBA you will also for sure learn lots of relevant information that will help you, I just don’t think it is the best route you can take for starting a business. Best! Heinrich
