    At 41 years old, I'm getting into pokemon cards because my 13 year daughter has been collecting them for years. We went to a local card shop and talked to the young owners. They were great and offered to help us learn to play the card game and to build our decks. We are already having fun collecting and trading at home. Now my 6 year old son wants to collect them. I am loving this so much.

    I was in junior/primary school when Pokémon came out and was obsessed. Probably one of my best memories as a kid. It was incredible being that age when it took off. Watching the original anime every morning before school, playing Blue on GBC and collecting cards, but we were too young to understand how to actually play. As the year hit 2001, I moved into Secondary school and the second gen came out, the craze had slowed a little in the UK and I grew out of it and sold my cards like many did. Luckily I remember my best card was a shiny Alacazam so nothing crazy.
    I've now started collecting again. I'm only looking at Base set, Jungle and Fossil as these were what I collected as a kid. It's amazing to be able to get that sense of nostalgia and again, I'm so grateful I'm able to feel that due to the age I was at the time. It's amazing that everyone can have their own personal experiences and different things that are special to them with Pokémon.
    Good luck collecting everyone and making more memories!

    I've been in the card business for years and this is by far one of the best videos I've seen. I'm mainly well versed in the sports card hobby and always collected pokemon on and off since I was a kid but it's only been recently that I've been learning about the ins and outs of pokemon cards. This is THE perfect beginners guide to any type of card hobby. The way you explained everything so simply yet in depth is a talent.
    The one thing that I would love to see you touch on, which I think would be really helpful, is explaining the different Pokemon eras such as Sword and Shield, Scarlett and Violet, and how they correlate to each release. I've found that to be the most confusing.

      This!!! I struggle with this the most. Got back into pokemon with my son after not collecting in over 20 years. I didn't even know half of these sets were a thing. I don't know what they mean. Which are more relevant or sought after. Kinda just winging it. He looks to me for guidance, and I pretend to know cuz ya know I'm dad. deep down, he probably knows more then me. I just tell him whatever looks cool or what he likes. Working so far. 😂

      +1 here. Looking to get into collecting with my daughter. I collected the 1st gen sets back in the 90s when I was a kid and have been blown away by the variety and range. Watched a few unboxings online and I’ve got no idea what the different artwork means. Vmax, EX, full art. So confused.

    Good video, very helpful. A lot has changed since I had pokemon cards 20 years ago. The other week my 8-year-old son came home from school talking about Pokémon and that he wanted to start collecting/playing. I was excited for him. I remember the buzz and hype when I was a kid. The feeling you got when your mom/dad bought you a pack for getting a good report card or hitting a home run in a little league game. Showing and comparing cards with friends at school. The feeling of trying to find or trade cards to complete that certain set. Ohh man, the memories. It's crazy how things come full circle. I was around my sons age when It came out, and I started collecting. These cards today leave me scratching my head lol. I didn't really know where to begin. we officially have got our first packs. Let the ride begin. Thanks for your help!

    Very useful information layed out in an easy to digest way.
    After getting an itch to collect Pokemon cards I headed out to my local card shop and asked about/read up on what packs are out there as well as which Pokemon each pack has to see the art & know which packs have more common & uncommon cards I'd be happy getting to enjoy the outcome. (Mainly seeking cute & pretty art). On the 5th day I bought a single pack of Evolving skies from my local grocery store & got an adorabubble reverse holo Emolga! Then the following day I bought the Giant pika promo box ($20 USD) I had been eyeing which had the cute holo Mimikyu card (the reason I bought the box) and ended up opening another cute reverse holo Plusle along several other cute cards & a holo Moltres so I was quuuite happy with my purchase! I like or highly loved nearly half of the cards I've opened & only got one duplicate card which is of a card I love so it's going great so far.
    I did break one of the rules by splurging on Marnie's Tournament milk-carton-like box paying above MSRP for her ($53+$12 shipping USD) tho still within my $100 budget. I love her character design so much and know I'll put her sleeves and deck holder to good use! (Learned sleeves with characters or designs can get rather expensive on their own) I also reeeally love her promo cards! She's so precious. Will come with packs for Battle styles, Chilling rains or Darkness Ablaze which I've yet to open so it'll be a pleasant little card boost to my collection too. Am bound to get some other cute ones I like among them but even if I don't, Marnie costs so much to buy on her own so at least this gives me a way to get her along with so many other goodies.

      Getting started is all about doing research and gathering information from different sources. Watching videos is the right first step. Defiently advice just getting something small and opening it. I think the silver tempest booster bundle would be good. It's around $24 dollars online and has 6 packs. Think it would be a good place to start to just open stuff.

      there’s not a lot you can do wrong specifically in collecting cards, it’s your collection so make it your own and enjoy collecting your way. there are obviously smart choices (such as a budget) but other than that, collect what and how you see fit

    • @XingCollectables
      @XingCollectables ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want to just collect cause you like the art of a particular card I'd suggest to just buy it. If you like the gamble of ripping packs and pulling a banger card then buy packs and enjoy the chase. If you want to collect for investment reasons then sealed booster boxes are the goto.

    • @NathTHFC1234
      @NathTHFC1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t go too far wrong if you aren’t paying massively above retail price for packs, and buying single cards from people if you’re unsure how to spot fakes. If you buy genuine product from reputable sources, and don’t massively overpay, you should be all good. You can also look up set lists to see what cards are in each set, and therefore decide which set you might like to open when you see some cards that you like! All the best

    • @madmanbenji
      @madmanbenji ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with TCGs is that the game part matters even if you don't want to play, otherwise the pretty bits of cardboard are just that. Don't collect to speculatively try make money (you wont). Find any other reason to justify it to yourself like fun, entertainment, community etc
      If you are worried about financial loss then don't get into it for real. Pretend that you have brought certain cards etc then watch how the prices rise and fall over a year or more.

    Great video . I’m just new and getting into Pokémon collecting . Just curious you set a few of the sets are cheap and some will get expensive . What makes a particular set of Pokémon more cheap or more expensive .
    As I believe the Pokémon sets are standard priced when released from Pokémon company so what makes one set more expensive / more popular than another set .
    Just curious as I’m trying to understand what makes one more rare or expensive than another

    • @GraveCollectibles
      @GraveCollectibles  ปีที่แล้ว

      It all goes to supply and demand. If there are cards in a set that are more sought after, then the card will increase in value, and the packs will, too.
      The true question is what makes people want certain cards more. Simply personal preference and hype. Hype is huge in the pokemon community. If people think a card will eventually be worth more. A ton of people will buy it driving up the price.
      Overall, this topic is a little complicated for just a comment response. Might be a good video.

    Thank you!! ^^ This helps me a lot, getting more organized when thinking about being a more knowledgeable and at least moderately committed collector. With the very few cards that I bought already in the past 4ish years of when I finally decided to try to start collecting, I was literally going by rather at random and just buying what I thought would be cool/would be right for a beginner like me, with pricings and such.
    A goal would rlly help me…Not really sure what that could be really! I guess I not only want to collect cards (if I could find some of the rarest cards, that’d be AWESOME), but also learn how to build a great and powerful deck for actual play. 😁 Been wanting to try it for years now actually! Just seems to be very few ppl out there that would actually care and love themselves to do so anymore.
    But anyway, thanks again!!!! ☺️❤️

  • @josephzhou7246
    @josephzhou7246 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well it depends on what you want collecting cards. In order to have fun at anything, games or sports you must win. There is no fun in losing or missing and having duds for a whole booster box. So in order to have fun collecting be aware of people weighing packs for you to get absolutely nothing. This is a great time to start because Crown Zenith pull rates and ETB ratios are the best in the history of Pokemon cards.

  • @Todoroki-Shoto
    @Todoroki-Shoto ปีที่แล้ว

    I just kicked off collecting the other day, I started by getting a Dragon Vmax box (To open), and Pokemon GO Instinct set for display purposes. I am both buying boxes for the box display, and buying boosters to open for fun. I got a little lucky and pulled a Giratina Vstar in my first large box. Now I'm thinking about how I want them to be displayed, because I am thinking you can do some pretty crazy things with jumbo cards.
    I'm also saving up, so you are 100% right about budgeting. Pokemon are fun but it's still nice to have money in the bank for rainy days and good times. Overspending could also impact your love of the hobby, spend too much and you will make yourself miserable which can in turn make Pokemon less enjoyable - so play it safe everyone.

    I have 0 knowledge of collecting cards, but I'm a videogame and console collector themed on pokémon for 8 years already and I'm based in Italy, and I personally can be wrong on what I'll be saying now so you can disagree with me (as long as is a respectful conversation).
    First of all, as he said, set precise goals and imo is better to NOT get into too expensive sets or old cards just now, so getting the latest cards is more cheaper and affordable, mostly because are way more easy to reach and to get good deals, also in my opinion, entering in the collection can be easy if you also have some friends or relatives with some cards that are taking dust somewhere else in the house, so if ya can buy some stuff from them or getting for free, do it, garage sales are good places to find nice things for cheap prices, so do that too.
    Secondly, be patient, don't get immediately an item cause you see that is available because one day you can see it for a cheaper price, so search a lot for good deals, sometimes take a LOT of time but is worth the wait, I collect for 8 years and I got my GBA limited of latios and latias for 600€ before we entered in the pandemic and is in very nice conditions, so this is important, be patient for get good deals, one day will arrive.
    Third, if you want to buy old booster packs of pokémon please keep them sealed, I've seen too many people open very old booster box and cards and the money that they lost for that is way too much, sometimes the closed item is WAY more valuable than the single card it self, I do understand the exiting moment of opening cards and hoping to find something incredibly rare, but even with the latest sets if you are not lucky you have to waste a lot of money in multiple booster box for complete the whole collection of that set, so keep this in mind, buy some extra booster box to keep sealed and never open, can get high value one day. (also little spoiler, opening old booster pack of pokémon card will increase drastically the value of the item as closed, this is because the quantity of sealed product decrease drastically that if was already expensive a 1000$ booster pack, imagine if reach the 3000$... or even more)
    Last point, do always safe transition, be careful of what you see online, ask for multiple pictures if needed and if you can do it, move it for get the deal by hand, sometimes people will use the pictures of others for scam, mostly now that the pokémon mania is way too high, too many ppl want to get into collecting in those times and the consequence is buying stuff for over priced or even with an high risk of being scammed, unfortunately this happen too much so be careful :(
    Probably arrive one day where those cards will continue to get an high value, but I don't know for how long this can go, but be careful and think a lot of the card collecting is for you or not, I personally noticed that wasn't for me since I was a kid, like ok yeah cool the cards but can be damaged very easily, even with a little defect can decrease the value-
    Out of this, have fun, stay safe, and take care! Good luck to all the newbie collectors

    This is an awesome video, I use to collect when I was younger as a kid and idk where they all went I had tons. Now that I got adult money I want to start getting into it again just for fun. You’re video is amazing and I’ll be watching more to learn as much as I can!

    Thanks for the video! One question...why not buy PSA cards?
    Anyways, I collected the cards back in the day and I finally dug them out. I have complete sets of the first 5 sets. Some 1st editions. I've stopped at a few different card shops and found one place that was really helpful. They will make recommendations and send in your cards to get graded. You are correct about sending cards in to get graded, it's about $30 a card. I'm mainly interested in the older cards and graded cards. I ask about buying PSA graded cards, because I made my first purchase today. I got some boxes, sleeves, top loaders, 4 packs, and a PSA graded card. The card I bought was just a simple 1st edition. It was $12. Here's the thing tho...I want graded cards, I'm not trying to make a profit. Someone paid $30 to have the thing graded...I bought it for half that, so basically I got it for half price. I'm looking to buy 1 graded card and about 4 packs every couple weeks. One random question...what should I do with energy cards? I don't play the game, but would consider it in the future. How many energy cards should I really keep around? I have roughly 75 each of the main types.
    Thanks!

    If you are gonna get into collecting vintage holos... Good luck fr and hopefully you have a big wallet because it's definitely not as cheap as when I started.
    I recommend everyone to just start collecting modern 🤷‍♂️ price points are everywhere and lots of sets for beginners to chase, I've personally moved on to diecast collecting after finishing my entire collection.

    a secret tip is that stores will actually matchmake with other stores
    lets say i go into target to grab an etb and its maybe $55
    you can go online to maybe walmart and see if they have the same thing for cheaper lets say $45
    if you show them at the checkout that its cheaper at walmart they will change the price to the cheaper price (walmart in this case)

    Great video!
    I used to own many 1999 cards but that was years ago lol. I have no interest to invest in anything, just wanna start collecting but soon realized there seems to be so many different editions I can't tell which ones work together or if all these different decks are for different pokemon card games lol. For example if I get a desk from Sword and Shield but then get a desk of cards from Sun&Moon are those the same card game and playable together or totally different and they have different pokemon that you can't get in other editions?
    For exmaple, if I want like gen 1 pokemon like pikachu, squirtle, chameleon and all their phases (so the original 9) and stuff do they have them in these new editions sets or is it just a bunch of new pokemon? I've probability never seen or heard of all the new things lol. I don't care for rarity in terms of how much they'd sell for. If I could buy and get a ton of gen 1 pokemon that I knew about from the 1990's that would be good enough for me (I think it was the original 151) lol

    Coming back after the late 90s school yard days. I was wondering - is there a full art or special ed Arbok? I was looking at some of my childhood faves and there seems to be something for every classic pokemon except Arbok, which is sad. My fave is obviously not popular with anyone involved in the game.

    So your last point about buying individual cards of a new set is a thing to avoid. But what about buying booster packs of a new set.
    For me, I'm completely new and I would've thought I should start at the newest set. And this currently being Paldea Evolved. Should I not buy these packs then or do you only mean individual cards?

    • @GraveCollectibles
      @GraveCollectibles  ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant individual cards. The reason for this is cards are usually super expensive when they first come out and slowly become cheaper the longer a set is out.

    I have more then 7000 POKEMON BASIC ENERGY CARDS SVEen 001 to 008. I'm trying to figure out what they are worth and how to sell them. These came from a comic book store, I assume they opened packs of cards to find the more valuable card and sold theses separately. I do not want to small lots but I may if can make money selling small lots. I listed them in an ebay auction starting bid $200 for the whole lot of 7000 and it did not even one view.

    I never got into the cards when I was in school in the 90s. Took a lot of crap just for liking video games so I wasn’t gonna bother with a tcg. Now I wanna get into it with my kids, Walmart typically has different stuff available. Do I buy the tins or booster boxes? Basically can I make a mistake just walking into the store and grabbing a box. I see a lot of tins and multipacks on clearance as well. Is it as simple as just opening cards regardless of what set they are from?

    • @GraveCollectibles
      @GraveCollectibles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you start getting it with your kids, I recommend going with the clearance stuff first. The reason for that being is that I think all the things that are currently on clearance is still pretty good. The reason why it's on clearance is more of there just being so much of it rather than it being "bad". I also think that your kids would appreciate non-booster box items more because they can come with extra stuff besides cards. While booster boxes just have the cards.

      @@GraveCollectiblesthanks for the reply, ya I worked at this Walmart for several years. Not ever realizing what was going out the door for so cheap lol. So in all the sets there’s always that chance of a crazy pull then? I’m just excited to set down and open them with the kids lol. I remember doing basketball cards in like 5th grade and had a lot of fun opening them. I’ll never forget my cousin pulling a Jordan rookie card! Gonna be a lot easier to convince my wife to start on clearance stuff. If you hadn’t replied I was gonna start with sword and shield elite trainer box

    • @GraveCollectibles
      @GraveCollectibles  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshuasandefur2833 Almost all modern can have good hits in them. Espeically for kids. I would def check out Brilliant stars, Astral radiance and silver tempest. They can have two hits in each pack. However, I think all modern can have good hits.

    Don’t be like me, I came across those gold backed cards from Amazon. I have rainbow charizard, several other charizards, upon first researching I was thinking damn, I have potentially thousands worth of cards here. Then I figured out they’re fake lol. But…. There does still seem to be a market for them, although they’re about 10 bucks each. Even though they’re fake I think holding on to them might be in best interest. Maybe Amazon stops making them, fast forward 20 years maybe they become worth something.

      Modern won't appreciate in value anymore its been reported by Nintendo they printed 20 billion cards (I think its more don't quote me) safe to assume most of these are gonna be unopened and collected for the same reason to wait for 30yrs. This is the phobia people had in the early 00's but difference is it's actually true making it extremely risky to get boxes for the sake they will appreciate in value someday.
      Now if you wanna buy vintage that will appreciate but you gotta know what you are getting and how scarce it is.
