You should see the smile on my face this morning. Thanks for this Steevee. I probably sawJohn Martyn more than any other artist in his time. Famously carnaptious, he wasa really nice guy the few times I met him. He even made his rich mates buy my friend and I a beer... only because I'd offered to buy him a beer in the Cafe Royal in Ediburgh. "Put your money away pal, those c**ts can afford it a lot more than you, what are you having?" We all have our faults and John had more than his fair share but overall, he was a genius and a fucking legend. Miss you big man.
@@joyceh2721 I hoped you would like this, I have drifted away from the shouty videos for a wee while, got a another calm one ready for tomorrow morning. Have a nice weekend.
@@ScottishTeeVee nice one. Looking forward to it. heard some good stuff lately. Liked "Live" a lot...saw a band on TV here yesterday, they're doing a concert in Athens. "Madruganda". pretty cool..have a good one Steevee ❤️✌️👍 Xx
John martyn is my biggest musical influence in all my somgwriting. His was the first music I ever heard. My dad played it to me when I was a baby, and I forgot it mostly, only remembering it on a subconscious level. I rediscovered him at 14 on a drive to Surrey with my dad. I had always gravitated towards singers with similar registers, and rhythmic finger style folk songs, and when I heard him again I realised that he satisfied all the musical cravings I had been having, without knowing their true source until my dad explained how he played johns Music for me when I was a baby. At 17 now, he is my favourite artist. I am constantly writing songs in alternate tunings inspired by him. My dad shared with me the stories of when he saw John martyn in concert in the 90s, a memory that he will always cherish, and that I will always cherish via absorption 😂😂. RIP John martyn. The goat 🐐
@@ScottishTeeVee I met John at the Nashville Rooms in West Kensington. We had both been in fights, he looked at me, I looked at him, we started laughing.
Saw him play live in Holland a few times. And in Brussels. Never disappointed us. Such a great man, we play his songs at (sadly enough) funerals. And when we relax. Brilliant.
Had a bar room fight with John Martyn earlier that year. Told me he was a Freemason and I called it the mafia of the mediocre. (He lost his temper). Didn't stop me from loving the talent and had a big influence on my songwriting. Have a listen.
John? Lose his temper................😉 Think that happened a lot. John was many things for many reasons but one things for sure he was gifted and we all benefit from gifted people. Good on ya mate for still admiring the talent.
This is great to wake up to. I’ve been listening to a lot of early John Martyn this past couple of weeks. I love his really early albums like “London Conversation”, “Bless The Weather” and the 2 brilliant albums he made with Beverly. He was a brilliant musician/songwriter. He was also crazy - but that was part of the deal with him. One of the best. Thank you for this.
Cracking version of Sweet Little Mystery from an under appreciated period in John’s career. I’m guilty of not being too familiar with much after Grace And Danger. Aside from a hazy memory of seeing him at The Big Day in Glasgow, I’m sad that I didn’t get to see him properly until the Solid Air Anniversary tour, by which time he was wheelchair bound. A flawed genius but his place in my head and heart is unquestionable. Rest easy big man.
@@ScottishTeeVee I spent most of the day at Custom House Quay watching Dick Gaughan, Billy Bragg, Natalie Merchant etc. John was on early afternoon iirc.
@@tomscotland I missed all of them, my GF and I wandered towards George Square, for Texas, that's all I can remember. Wish we had encountered you to point us in the direction of the better bands. 🎸
@@ScottishTeeVee gah! Also, I’m sure I’ve told you this on fb John, but this is one of the best archives I’ve ever seen, thank you for making it available.
Bro I love your channel for the reef videos you uploaded, and I was browsing John martyn videos and noticed that you had uploaded a John martyn video! Nice to see a crossover! Hope you are doing well, you have great great taste.
Man in the station doesn't work that souped up way, works best in its original studio version 1972 approx and the divine duet he did with a Scots jazz singer whose name escapes. Electric guitar? No thanks 😅
I am not a fan of this period of JM. This just sounds like IKEA music and that sax needs to go. He was mighty in the 1970s and didn't make a single bad record - like David Bowie his golden period was 1970 - 1980.
