    Best WDT tutorial in the whole internet

    Hello Brian, I appreciate your work, specially on grinders comparisons and testing. I use a similar procedure than you and Í´ve learned some new tips about wdt watching your video. In my opinion taping once its ok but 5 or more, have more downsides than benefits because of the “dry fines migrations”. Thank you

      @mikejason3822 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. Vertical taps can significantly slow down the shot due to fines moving downward. This limits the ability to grind finer.

      Plus: they are expensive, so they automatically maake your coffee better
      Minus: Actually they don't do anything lol

    12:13 Over dose and a puck screen, not an ideal combination. In fact, you should down dose when using a puck screen. The puck screen will occupy space between the coffee puck and the shower screen, so the expansion of the coffee puck is more restricted than the situation without the puck screen if you use the same dose.

    Super helpful as I’ve just been starting to wdt. I’ll have to see if you have a video on the Decent Tamper. I got the v3 used and just started using it. It’s only. 15lb spring on the v3 and I’m surprised by how little pressure that feels like when using it.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a video on the V3 but I recently swapped form it to the Happy Tamper because I find the results to basically be the same but the Happy Tamper provides an easier workflow on my hands and the flexibility for different tamping pressures! The Happy Tamper is also 1/2 the weight basically of the Decent Tamper. 15lb and even less is completely fine though.

    Hello! Longshot here but any chance you could suggest where to find a portafilter holder such as this one? And whether it is suitable for various portafilter sizes

    Now you HAVE to show us why no Swirly Tools! I haven't bought one yet. I'm on the fence.

    • @PradyumnVij
      @PradyumnVij 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I up throwing mine out after trying for a year, I ended up losing coffee to the "swirly tool" or causing over compressed areas at other times giving me channels or weird timings on my shots. Once I got a WDT tool it was immediately a better extraction and fluffier grounds with a better looking puck that does not channel.

    • @devrim1134
      @devrim1134 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just moves the grounds around on the top layer of the puck and doesn’t do anything to the lower parts. Its basically a crappy tool

    • @MrMarki134
      @MrMarki134 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@devrim1134 i'm afraid you are wrong friend. It does something. Create uneven densities in the puck. Which sucks hahahah

      @@MrMarki134 I’m never wrong 😜 Think we agree because I said: doesn’t do anything to the lower parts and that results in uneven densities.
      Just read in a research paper that an OCD even creates a lower TDS & extraction yield. Nice example on how proper marketing can make a difference 😉

    My approach is similar; deep WDT, then surface WDT, then happy tamp. Unless I'm overdosing I don't tap, as it feels like it causes donut extraction?

  • @WasimBarri
    @WasimBarri 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wouldn't a leveler eg OCD take away that outside ring and leave a dead flat surface for tamping? I know this adds to the workflow and requires an extra tool. An excellent video BTW

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking the OCD styles of tools aren't actually doing a great job of levelling anyway and just doing a top rake will solve that

  • @nkermit1
    @nkermit1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Brian, another great video! Just curious - how did you come to decide on that pattern for your Multi-level WDT? I take a similar, but different approach - in that I tend to work around the outside first, then into the middle. Curious if there is a particular rhyme or reason for doing it this way.
    Hope you're enjoying the MC4!

    What do you prefer on the happy tamper over the Decent tamper? Been looking at it, but wasn't sure if workflow, cleaning, etc is that much better compared to the Decent tamp.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It basically does the same thing but it is 1/2 the size and weight and has the flexibility to go +/- 15lb of pressure!

  • @cjlafleur7585

    Do you think that making sure the grinds are distributed evenly by moving the portafilter around and then giving it a bit of a swirl to fill in areas that get thin coverage would be similarly effective to deep WDT if you're not worried about clumps?

    Imo, when choosing a grinder in the $2,500+ price point getting one that produces grinds that do not require raking is paramount. I strongly dislike fafffing about with tools and techniques like this, but I do honestly get why some people really enjoy the ritual.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grinders regardless of price point will always benefit from WDT! If you get a more expensive grinder you're going to have an even better result in cup if you WDT :)

    • @thePowerPlant
      @thePowerPlant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianQuan I really do not doubt it, but MC4/TITVS grinders are pretty dang good w/o raking, so much so that the extra effort is not worth it, personally. But I will restate that I get how the ritual is really nice for a lot of people. For me it is kind of like the mellow drip tool for pour overs. I am sure that ensures a better cup, but it's not worth the effort of washing it later.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IMO outside of the 98mm Max LM I feel you get punished for not doing WDT as many burrs aren't as forgiving at least in my experience. I WDT with my MC4 but I actually recently stopped doing RDT with it. If I don't RDT with the Max grounds go everywhere lol.

    • @thePowerPlant
      @thePowerPlant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianQuan Apologies, I meant M4(Versalab)/TITVS. The "C" makes an utter difference. That style of grinder just seems to produce grounds that settle easily. I was influenced by the channel "eltakeiteasy" here on YT. They use a TITVS paired with a Force-tamper to great results on a LR24 . Anyway, I think whatever works for the individual is best. If raking is what gives you your best cup, then by all means. Personally, when I chose my grinder I wanted one that allowed me a (relatively) faff-less flow.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thePowerPlant ahhh I'd consider a versalab if it didn't jam. Even with WDT the M3/M4 see benefits but there's definitely a "good enough" mentality after a certain point.
