    You missed 2 important details:
    Rule 5 eligibility is for players with 4+ years in the minors and no mlb service and only players over 24, and in order to keep them, they must spend an entire season on the 26-man roster unless injured, with rule 5 status carrying to new team in a trade.

    Some of the other rules for the Rule 5 draft are:
    You cannot have played in the MLB at any point, only MiLB. (Idk if this is still true, but it used to be)
    You must have spent at least 4years in the minors if you were drafted at 19 or older, five if 18 or under.
    You have to have at least 90 days of active service of your new team to stick with them, unless you were injured, and even then you are expected to pick it up where you left off the next season you are cleared to play.

    Last year the Oriole's Anthony Santander was in running for AL MVP before he lost the last month or so of the season to an injury. In 2021 his production's suffered primarily due to more injuries, but when he's healthy, he can rake. He also has an above-average throwing arm from right field. If he can stay on the field, next year could be a breakout one for him.
    Tyler Wells, who the O's selected in last year's Rule 5 from the Twins, is someone to watch. He's flown under the radar a bit. He won Minnesota's 2018 Minor League Starting Pitcher Award, then missed 2019 due to Tommy John surgery, and last year because the minor league season was shut down. The 6'8" right-hander was decent before the break, finishing with a 4.10 ERA, but he's really flourished since then, having yet to give up an earned run in 10.2 IP. On Sunday he earned his first save, and it wasn't a cheapie, getting a one-two-three ninth at Yankee Stadium against Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo to seal an 8-7 win against a team still in the playoff hunt. His stuff (heater that reaches the high '90s, wipeout slider) is good enough that there's been talk about putting him in the rotation next year, but he's also valuable in a late-inning role.
    So, thanks for the video, and, yeah, a follow-up or two might be in order at some point (you can always hold one back for the winter meetings). Also, doing a historical Rule 5 video would be interesting, because it includes Hall of Fame players: www.mlb.com/news/complete-history-of-the-mlb-rule-5-draft-c210225288

    I was hoping to see Jays reliever Joe Biagini. He had a good season in 2015 when he was claimed from the Giants

  • @itsjeff9613
    @itsjeff9613 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 2018 rule 5 draft was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen they draft an 18 y/o whose only eligible because of a technicality, and he stays and contributes positively, and now the Jays have a young arm that can properly develop. Then Travis Bergen was taken in the draft, who was returned mid season, and promptly flipped the next year for Robbie Ray, and then re-acquired. Then as mentioned Romano was taken then returned and became an elite closer. Fun fact about Romano is that he was never supposed to be a starter, like he never even started a single game in College, and his 2014 season in the minors the reason he was made a starter was, was to get him the innings he needed after missing 2015 with Tommy John, and because in the minors you can succeed with 2 elite pitches as a starter, CHW and TEX got tricked into thinking he was a starter, and for some reason didn't want to give him a shot in the bullpen, worked out pretty well for the Jays I'd say. All told for the 2018 Rule 5 draft the Jays came away with a promising still very young arm, an elite closer, a CY Young winner and the compensation pick for said CY Young winner departing.

    They really need to make some changes to the Rule 5 draft. Last year the Angels lost Jose Soriano to the Pirates. He was recovering from Tommy John surgery. I guess the Pirates decided to have him pitch way too soon and he needed another Tommy John surgery. The Angels got him back recently but how much time will he miss now? If a pitcher in the minors has Tommy John surgery everything should freeze for them. All that should matter is getting them back to being able to pitch. They should also stay on the 60 Day IL until they're healthy.

      @@pohorex6834 After double-checking, you do seem to be correct on that detail. I was under the impression that someone like Ivan Nova's experience with being a Rule 5 pick was the norm, where they got cut before opening day. I was wrong there.
      Regardless, some guys do get cut and returned before opening day, and some of those guys never make the majors even after being Rule 5 picks. Some examples I found over the last decade of guys who never made the majors even after being returned are Kevin Gadea, Anyelo Gomez, Zack Jones, Kevin Munson, and Michael Almanzar.
