He sacrificed himself in order to protect his son and give him a better life. instead of being selfish and forcing his son to live that life he saw the hardest decision a father would ever have to make and took it with zero hesitation in order to protect his son

Character development is like Vegeta through DBZ.
You can look at dragon ball super as somewhat of a return to its roots. During dragon ball (OG), goku had to learn to master his mind to be able to properly anticipate his opponents moves, manipulate ki properly, etc. Goku took these lessons to heart and grew as a fighter because of it.
However, in dragon ball Z, that style kinda took a backseat. It started to become irrelevant. It didn’t matter how skilled or calm goku was, if he wasn’t strong enough in terms of raw power, he would lose. Super saiyan is a perfect case of this. It pretty much goes against everything goku has learned. He now needs to rely on his anger and fury to reach the power necessary to win. At that seemed to work for the most part.
Jump foward to DBS and those lessons originally taught in DB come back (represented in ultra instinct, god ki, etc). Goku had to relearn these lessons on a much grander scale, and since he hasn’t really used those lessons in decades, it was a challenge.
Not saying it’s perfect, it’s very flawed. But to say there’s nothing there is kinda hater talk. Gotta look past the surface a bit.
This hurts so much... Like he didn't remember his father ... Megumi was grade 1 when he died ... Even at that time he didn't remember him properly.... Even tho in Toji's memory he had a blurry image of megumi .... When he is all grown up Toji was able to recognise him even when this was not his real body .... Whereas megumi couldn't becz toji didn't spend much time with him.....this shows that Megumi didn't look back ever again not for his mom or dad .... Only his sister and later he will lose her too....This just is so sad .... This was one of the most bitter sweet moments of Shibuya arc....

Toji wasnt a bad father in heart. He just did alot of mistakes , he never tried to harm his son , the reason he didn't took care of him was 'cause of fear and doubt , imagine a young boy in the middle of a life of a bounty hunter ? Well considering how he tried to sell megumi to zenin because zenin can give better life to megumi or how he indirectly asked for gojo to look after megumi because he can raise megumi better than him, he just wouldn't call himself father of megumi after he didn't fulfill the father role even tho he cared about megumi to some extent. Toji here is just mature and realistic. He knew he was bad influence with bad mental state from loss of his wife who won't be able to give a good life to megumi hence he tried to do everything to make megumi have better life to the point he actually avoided him which could most likely to avoid connection with megumi so megumi won't be influenced by him or attached by him. So I don't think toji would just go out there and call himself megumi's father when he had done his best to avoid that.
