    I was not born here, but I first came to Durham 32 years ago. For those who may not have been here that long, downtown Durham's turnaround is shocking. Especially since about 2008 or so, though the change accelerated beginning in about 2015. I remember a desolate, empty, and downright dangerous downtown. You did not go there at night - EVER - unless you wanted to participate in illicit activities and possibly get shot. The change is mostly for the better. Something had to be done. There have been some unfortunate consequences, such as expensive housing, and many of the original, much poorer residents being forced to leave (gentrification). For those people who were affected in this way, I feel bad for them. But I don't know what else could have been done. There has been some historic preservation, such as keeping the old tobacco buildings and repurposing them, which I think was a good and important thing since it honored the city's history. Who would have believed Durham would ever become a cool place to be - but it has!

      I'll probably head to Georgia in the Spring or Summer next year. Of course, I'll go to Atlanta first but will try to get some of those other towns too.

      @@MileageMikeTravels awesome, what are those cities like compared to NC cities like Durham?

    • @MileageMikeTravels
      @MileageMikeTravels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@leonation89 Columbus is a military town and reminded me of a smaller version of Fayetteville more than anything. Augusta, I'm also not a big fan of. It just doesn't seem to have much interesting going on or to offer. It's reminiscent of some of the economically depressed towns in Eastern NC. I'd prefer Durham over either of those two cities.

    Love this video looks like with me seeing it I'm already there in Durham, LOL!!!!! Even that saw the hwy 147 Durham Freeway video the changes of it near Research Triangle Park reminded of how interstate 85 was constructed in Durham back in the early 2000's 😁

      Yeah NCDOT is planning to change the Durham Freeway to I-885. You can kind of see it behind one of the covered signs on the video.

    20 yrs ago downtown Durham was a dump. Now it's all trendy and hipster. Apartments going up like crazy. Overrated and stupid inflated housing prices...but the Bull City made a comeback.
