  • “Who we are and who we become depends on how we arrange the plot points in our lives into a narrative that shapes our existence and is a fundamental part of being human.”- Carl Patterson.
In an eloquent and inspiring talk, Patterson discusses the plight facing African American males and how the Black Male Initiative is making a difference in the lives of these young men.
Originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, Carl Patterson recently graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in December 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He intends on continuing his education by pursuing a M.A. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Child Play Therapy. Carl is a licensed claims adjuster and an active member in the community. He is also a member of the Black Male Initiatives and Fellows program at UCO which primary goal is to aid young African American men in becoming successful academically, professionally, and socially.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

never heard of the BMR program till now, I like it because it get's them out of the environment that makes them feel bad for wanting to better themselves rather than just patronizing them with extra points. I've heard countless stories of black men being judged for wanting an education most likely because of the young black men back home feeling insecure and feel the need to belittle them for it ''what you think you're better than me cause you're a college boy now'' ''lets see what you know about the streets then we'll see who's smart'' etc.

More African-American males attend community colleges, such as where I work. How does this work on commuter colleges. I would love to use the VMI program where I work
