The FAILURE of Sin Cara in WWE

- On February 24th 2011, WWE held a press conference in Mexico City to announce their newest signing Sin Cara. And this signing was treated as a really big deal, doing press conferences to announce a wrestler signing was something that was unheard of from WWE at the time, so what made this signing such a big deal? Well, it’s because prior to him signing to WWE, Sin Cara was known as Mistico and he was a HUGE star in Mexico, and in lucha libre… so much so that a comic book series was made about him and his character, and WWE just had to capitalise on a star this big in Mexico. However if you know anything about Sin Cara and his run in the company, you’ll know that it didn’t meet expectations whatsoever. So let’s talk about Sin Cara fka Mistico’s failed run in the WWE.

Tom, I genuinely admire your top-notch wrestling analyses, but I couldn't help but notice a factual inaccuracy in 'The failure of Sin Cara in WWE.' Contrary to what was mentioned, there was never a trampoline involved in Sin Cara's storyline. It's crucial to ensure accurate information, and though this detail may seem minor, it's essential for maintaining the integrity of your otherwise excellent work. Keep up the great content, but let's set the record straight - no trampoline in Sin Cara's tale
He did use a trampoline though...
This dude must be trolling hard...
@@mrdoctorprofessorpatrick803 That's what I was thinking but i wasn't 100% sure
@@adam_a923 ive seen this dork in Top10s comments before, hes definitely trolling. He must think he is being so funny when us wrestling fans just look down on him with pity...
@@adam_a923Maybe he means that- The trampoline wasn’t in the STORY, in that WWE wanted the TV audience to not know it was there.
That or he’s dumb lol
There were reports of Sin Cara refusing to learn english and everyone he wrestles basically had to wrestle on the fly and just react and was really hard
yea I heard that too
I spoke to heath slater when I met him earlier this year at a concert (swell guy by the way) and he said he actually had no problem working with Sin Cara (the original) that he had better in ring chemistry with him than he did with Hunico (second sin cara).
As a sloppy worker as Sin Cara* is I do admire how he basically freestyles his matches which is pretty cool but he’s also holding his opponents hostage 😅
I’ve met Sin Cara, he knows English.
This is true, I was Cara
WWE '12 had Sin Cara as the cover star in copies released Mexico, that's how far WWE wanted to push this guy.
Yeah, the other two covers were Orton and Rock. Sin Cara was also on the cover of the best of raw and SmackDown 2011 DVD
@nonsensicaltopics 12-13 were so good fr.
BRUH, all these years I thought that was fan made lmaooo
Smack down vs raw 2008 was a blast
@@ozguryilmarxnah go back a couple years SvR is goated too. I liked the multistories they had before the singular Sheamus, HHH, Cass story. All of them goated too. But 12 was my first WWE game. And it was Amaaaazing. Sucks that time travel ain’t been invented yet😂wouldn’t mind busting up the Wii one more time, kick my younger self’s ass😂
I think the biggest issue was that Mistico insisted to be put on the main roster right off the bat. Had he spent some time in the developmental territory, perhaps he would've adapted to WWE's style of wrestling and wouldn't be known as a botch machine to this day.
I think that himself mistico He didn't want to adapt, which is a shame because to this day he is excellent in CMLL, we are lucky that Dragon Lee and Santos Escobar adapted well
Thats not good
@@MohdAli-sh3df In fact, this was Hunico , mistico went to AAA and adopted the character mystezys, which was also something that started out much more disappointing in the end because of the booking
@@bernardosantosribeiro6665They learned from Mistico's mistakes!
@@RobertJW What mistakes?
I remember WWE building Sin Cara as another Rey Mysterio.
The beginning of the end (besides the botches) is Mistico didn't want to learn the American-style like Alberto did.
He was never going to achieve that
Between Sin Cara and Del Rio.
At least Del Rio got far in WWE, can't say the same for Cara.
@@InFiNiTeO7 Compare them now tho.
Alberto didnt have to change tbh. he was always more like a brawler in Mexico due to his physique
@@ernestogastelum9123 According to Alberto El Moron in shoot interviews, he said that he had to go to OVW to learn the American-style.
WWE wanted MIstico (the original Sin Cara) to go to OVW too but Mistico refused.
Sin Cara was one of my favorite wrestlers at the time. I never knew that there were two of them and that Mistico (Sin Cara's original name) was released and Hunico took over the charcter Sin Cara.
Not a lot of people knew it's one of the many things that comes with following everywhere with a ring if you only follow the biggs you're only going to know what happens there
same i never had internet as a kid so i never knew about anything behind the scenes and thats what made wrestling so great for me but now i feel like its plagued and fans are always so angry and weird.. i feel it has something to do with having all this bts bs

I still remember the match where he injured his finger and called off the match and a pissed off Del Rio kept attacking him because of that. Mistio I heard was quite unpleasant backstage rude towards others and refused to do any training
If you injured your finger when in a wrestling match you should still continue the match
Gee i wonder why he got signed to a racist company, got signed to a company that hired him for his talent then proceeded to not use his wrestling style which has most of his talent

Gotta correct you when you said WWE had never given anyone special lighting. When Kane debuted, he had red lighting in his matches for a while
he was Kane.
I'd argue that doesn't count because Glenn had been a few different characters. So when he debuted as Kane, he wasn't stepping foot in the WWE ring for the first time if that makes sense.

His final match was LEGENDARY. Honestly one of my all time favourites
Still sad how he failed so bad because back in the day Sin Care and Rey Mysterio were my absolute favorite tag team.
Rey? Don’y u mean Kalisto?

Facts lol
Kane originally wrestled with a red light on but it wasn’t for very long but technically had his own themed lighting before sin cara
Even if he never botched or got hurt one time, Sin Cara's WWE run was doomed to fail because he never bothered to learn English (at least that's what I heard, correct me if I'm wrong). How are going to connect with the audience if you can't speak their language? It's no coincidence that the 2 most successful Hispanic stars in Rey and Eddie spoke perfect English. Look how many other Hispanic wrestlers who are good in the ring but fail to reach their level of success in the states because they can't simply talk to the audience.
The same way UFc fans get behind people that don't speak English, letting the work speak for him and with a charismatic translator would do wonders.
I liked him.
He couldve had a manager that couldve spoke for him...
Even Alberto Del Rio had a way with connecting with the audience
@rickyrodriguez5226 Idk man, I don't really watch much wrestling, but when I do, it's usually involving more trash talk and personality work than actual wrestling. Ufc tends to be the exact opposite, at least to a casual
Sin Cara may had been a memetic failure, but that disaster of a sign was one of the key elements that eventually convinced Vince to greenlight Triple H's new vision for NXT: a developement brand dedicated to help indie and foreign stars to adapt themselves to the WWE style and with even English if necessary, before joining the big brands. Basically a "We dont want another Sin Cara case".
Mystico can be a dick, back in September me and a co worker went to a mexican wrestling show here in Tijuana, there was a line for people to take pictures with mystico and when my co worker went up to take a picture with him mystico slightly backed off and even asked him politely if he could sign one of his masks mystico said “I don’t sign anything unless if you buy one of the masks they are selling upfront” my friend looked sad afterwards
Dang. I've never been to a wrestling signing before however I've seen some fans get their merch signed.I wonder if it was a contract thing.
Probably, I watched him a couple days ago, he stayed for like another 30 minutes on the ring taking pics with everybody. @@gokuwrightattorneyatlaw5227
Wow really? I went to see him in those Tijuana shows too a good 7 years ago in middle school and he was pretty nice, I think he signed my poster(?) but he was kinda picky, that really sucks for your friend!
ssounds like a you problem
it may be in his contract or his trying to avoid people selling the signed merchandise
2011 was a complete mind f*** for me and the WWE. I really felt like guys like Christian, Mark, Truth were finally going to be main eventers for the next few years. Plus we had Karma in the women's division. And I really thought Sin Cara was going to be next major cruiser weight since Rey. All of that went down the toilet. And unfortunately 2011 was the last year I watched WWE full time since 1998.
Not to mention my Bucs were coming off a 10-6 record the previous year. Then in 2011 they start 4-2 but end up losing the final 10 games leading to the head coach getting fired.
Plus on my 25th birthday that year I spent the day with the girl of my dreams. However she ended up marrying someone else after she was done with me. Thank you 2011. You were my ultimate fake out.
Just wait, there's more!
It's funny how some year, in hindsight, have a running plot you just keep falling for. It's almost like it's the catalyst for growth lol
2011 also had CM Punk’s hottest run. Christian was in the world title scene with that incredible feud with Randy Orton. It wasn’t all too bad.
The amount of swerves in those stories, I thought your life was booked by Vince Russo.
Let's see, my 2011 year, age 28..

Personally I love Hunico's run of the character as Sin Cara 2. Lucha Dragons are one of the most fun tags.
I liked sin cara but I was also a literally a child lol
They were hoping and wanting him to be the next Rey Mysterio
He's one of my favorite wrestlers from the attire alone and awesome ring style when not butch
Hes so lame and so are you for liking him
I remember me and my little brother watched wwe around 2011 to 2012 we were hyped everytime sin cara had a match because well, his entrance/ theme were great and his moveset was very high fly'ish I think the highest points of his time in wwe was when he had a feud against the sin cara imposter and when he teamed up with kalisto to form the lucha dragons, but after they were separated, he became a jobber.
I thought Hunico or however you spell it, was a better Sin Cara than mistico.
And he technically got even with Mistico. Hunico originally used that name "Mistico" and Mistico (or his real name Luis Urive) took that name from him.
The changing of lights for Sin Cara was to assist him to see the elements/help him pull off his extravagance. ie...he claimed he hit his botches due to the extra lighting. Considerable, the production for everything in the USA is different from the rest of the world, music, theatre, etc.
I can't help but feel that Sin Cara's failure in WWE was intentional. I feel that Mistico didn't even really like working for WWE, so he sabotaged himself so he could go back to working in Mexico.
No bro, Sin Cara wants to work from the WWE bro even you're Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde. WWE is the biggest Wrestling Promotion you can earned Millions of Dollars to the WWE in just only a single matches performance. I think the only problem of Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde is he's injuries before he became a WWE wrestlers, like Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde said he is having a Major Back Bone Injury last 2007 during Mistico Ring Name and he can recovered 2008 due to a surgery. Then that injury cameback again and again when he performed a hard acrobatic stands in WWE. The last injury of Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde is he's broken fingers due to not right land properly. Usually it's happen to all Wrestler a broken bones that is normal to all Wrestlers.
Mistico is still one of the best even now, still a massive star in CMLL and does the occasional AEW and NJPW appearance. Could've at least pointed that out
Man, sin cara had such great potential. He could have been portrayed as an high flying arch nemesis to mysterio and maybe even be a great heel.
Actually Kane had red light for his first few matches like vs mankind
you should make a video about the failure of del Rio
Cultaholic just did that
Hunico Counld of been a better Sin Cara or maybe he was, because he could actually talk
They SHOUDLVE kept him to do so fr instead of dropping the character all together
I miss Sin Cara tbh he was one of my favs at the time😭
American wrestling moves are the most basic in the world. So to hear you guys critisize things you guys cant even do is funny.
I was watching CMLL and it is 100% better than WWE
I mean they’ve literally had guys that could do it lmao it’s just honestly two different types of wrestling. Acting like yall could do every single move others do is laughable. Quit acting high and mighty over scripted wrestling moves.😂

Kane was given this treatment early into his debut run. Most notably during his match with Mankind at Survivor Series 1997 had the entire match in red and black lighting
Wwe have a hard time finding another Rey mysterio.
They still have a hard time. Even with Dominik being a fan favorite.
The problem is there isnt going to be another Rey Mysterio. He’s one of a kind, and no one can truly do the same as Rey Mysterio did in his career.
@@mrgonzale0978 no sorry, dragon Lee is well on his way to being the next Rey.
@@1KQ_ I have to agree. Im still a fan of dragon hopefully WWE don’t screw this up. Rey misterio is one of a kind for Latinos everywhere. Is like the Mount Rushmore of Latin/hispanic wrestling first el santo then mil mascaras and blue demon and I will put misterio instead of any member of the Guerrero family or HOF Carlos colon.
Please, the story of the 2nd Sin Cara is so interesting. Something about back in Mexico, Mistico (OG Sin Cara) took the name from Hunico, and then poetry wrote itself when Hunico took the Sin Cara name from Luis (OG Sin Cara)
Mistico's WWE run was definetly what killed any hope of him ever having a career I'm the states, he just gained such a bad reputation from it that nobody wanted to hire the guy, not even AEW would touch Caristico these days but again it's not totally his fault, he wanted to be put in there with the main roster instead of going to FCW and learning the more fundamentals based style of wwe. Ironically the guy who picked up his gimmick should have probably been the real Sin Cara all along and should have gotten the push over him.
Lol i agree
your take didnt age well since he has wrestled in AEW 3 times and the fans love him. also he hasnt used the name Caristico for years now since hes back with the name Mistico
Also, he apparently didn't speak English and even the smallest miscommunications in the ring can be disastrous. Not to mention, it took promos out of his arsenal.
i think the biggest mystery is how he lasted in the WWE for like a whole decade
This may be five months late, but I don't think the first Sin Cara was in the WWE as long as the second one. Also, he had some crazy merch sales.
Sin Cara today would have been a good fit in NXT and imagine him in a tag team with dragon lee or even axiom?
Love him or hate him I don't care sin cara aka mistico will always be my favorite luchadore
I bought a Sin Cara mask as a kid I thought he was the coolest thing as a kid the look, the gymnastics, all of it I was sold man 😂
Yes when I first saw him 10 year's old . First the hype they made i thought he is gonna be then next big thing
Feel like it went downhill when the moment the botches become more frequent which were so bad but so good. HBK vs Hulk Hogan Summerslam 2005 and Sin Cara in WWE are the godfathers of Botchamania.
I think Shawn did that because he didn't agree with Hulk Hogan wanting to win the match or something like that
@bernardosantosribeiro6665 yup the kings of that doesn't work for me. Never been a michaels fan but i get this one.
HBK v Hulk Hogan was on purpose, Shawn Michaels was ticked off about how Hulk Hogan politicked to change the planned feud to just a single match that he won instead of having them trade wins for a few shows.
@@tylerdurden788 Post-Christianity Michaels is one of the best people in wrestling ironically
They wouldn't allow him to keep his original style. Mistico is great but sin cara was a shell of his former self.
He couldn't adapt. That's the difference between him and Rey. Rey was able to slow down his style to get great matches
@@jesusleyva4386 that explains why rey isn't as fast or agile like he was in wcw or in Japan wrestling. Makes sense buuuut I prefer my luchadors fast. They are alot more fun to watch when they go all out
@gokuwrightattorneyatlaw5227 Rey has had so many knee surgeries, it's amazing he's still able to perform as well as he can
@@jesusleyva4386 that is also true
I always preferred the Hunico version of Sin Cara. He was a lot better in the ring, plus he could speak English. I remember him talking backstage in an interview and Andrade coming in to challenge him and Hunico accepting. But he lost every match against Andrade, and then later on got released. Before that he was part of the Lucha Dragons with Kalisto and that was cool, I liked both of them. But Kalisto got released as well, I wonder what happened to him. The bottom line is that the original Mistico Sin Cara wouldn’t adapt to the WWE style, plus he wouldn’t learn English, and that’s why they replaced him. I still like Hunico as Sin Cara to this day, he had a good theme song as well!
When the imposter Sin Cara ended up becoming the real one in the end it's kind of funny. It's like after Brian Lee played the imposter Undertaker he went on to become the character going forward. Ironically though his replacement had a much better run in the Lucha Dragon's.
His first two botches doomed him

Cara could barely see through the mask, he could speak English, he’s back in the AEW as Mystico and has had an interview where I’m pretty sure he’s speaking fluent english.
I guess we can all now put that the allegations WWE made agaisnt him are fake. Shocking, coming from a human trafficking company.
You can have "Cara could barely see through the mask", but 10 years ago he not only didn’t speak English but outright refused to learn it. He was a prima donna who thought being Hulk Hogan popular in Mexico meant he was entitled to the Hulk Hogan treatment wherever he went. His disastrous WWE run that tarnished his reputation north of the Rio Grande humbled him, and it was being humbled that allowed him to grow into the pretty good Mistico you see in AEW a decade later.
Its sad. I used to stay up till 2am to watch mistico on telemundo. One of the best luchadors ive ever seen, second only to rey mysterio. Wwe should know how to handle mexican wrestlers by now
Sin Cara was a joke.
The dudes portraying him were always getting hurt.
Hunico's Sin Cara was far better. I hope one day he'll return hed fit in this LWO storyline perfectly. Mistico didnt want to adapt the to the US style of wrestling neither did he want to speak english. I feel the lightning and his mask played alot into why he botched alot tho.
I wouldnt call him a failure or maybe i would but he did get more success and fame then you ever will 💀
This is a Joke lol or is it? 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Sin cara got that potential to become one of the big names if only he learn how to speak English. The fact that wwe tried to push him says it all. Remember how excited i am with ny brother whenever i hear his name mentioned and how I always pick him in WWE 2k game
I always remembered loving Sin Cara I was always so sad he never really went anywhere
The problem was he trying to go the US in general, he was doing great in Mexico where the greatest wrestling in the world happens. Mexico style is way better than american style, more fluid and dynamic, in the US it's more like going to see a play and it's boring. Stop fuckin talking i want to see you fight.
Going from Mexico to US in wrestling is like going from the US to Mexico in baseball, why would a star in american baseball go to Mexico to play if you already are in the biggest and greatest country to play baseball? That's what happened with Mistico.
I didn't know about this. I loved Sin Cara at that time cause he was such a different face in terms of how he interact with people
I was just about to say I could’ve sworn he was in a team with Kalisto 😅
Sin cara was the wrestler that could’ve been 😞 will always be one of my favorites
He was my favorite character back in primary school days
The moves the sin Cara did was hard I definitely understand the botches

He was amazing wrestler
JESUS LOVES YOU ALL HE IS OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR AND THE ONLY WAY TO SALVATION
Man I can't believe it's almost been 10 years since he left wwe, man how time flys
Little charisma, botches, lack of originality and overshadowed by Mysterio’s legacy are the reasons I’m assuming before having watched the video
Sin Cara is far more popular in Latin America than Rey Mysterio. Rey wasn't even born in Mexico nor had a Mexican upbringing.
So the lack of originality, overshadowed, and little charisma are already debunked. For the botches, there are only 4 examples, and 3 of them weren't even his fault the rope wasn't pretty but it wasn't a disaster. Try again, little bud.
man, this video and these comments suck.
Mistico is absolutely insane in the ring, some of the reasons why he had problems wasn’t even his fault
First off, his match basically made him blind
then, the matches lighting made it even harder to see
the wrestling style is way different than in mexico.
the ring size was different.
and the allegations about him not wanting to learn english or being a dick aren’t even real.
wwe fumbled him.
the biggest reason for his boches was that mask had bad visibility and dark lightning doesnt help too,
Also, a lot of wrestlers didn’t know how to take his moves. His matches with Sheamus and Christian are painful to watch, because they don’t understand the lucha style. They worked well with Rey, because Rey Americanized his arsenal and they worked a million times with him. Mistico was more pure lucha. But some wrestlers either were super talented to grasp lucha quick or trained in lucha. His matches with Cesaro were top notch and perfect. Heck, he even hit a flawless La Mística on TED DIBIASE OF ALL PEOPLE!
I do believe if he was positioned to only wrestle guys who understood his style from the beginning, he would’ve done better. But oh well.
He came into WWE close to when I stopped watching but I never felt like he belonged he felt out of place for some reason. His entrance was cool and he had pretty entertaining moments but like you mentioned I do remember quite a few goofs
The New Sin Cara is AXIOM LOL 😁😅😅
Mistico career in WWE could not be the best, but in méxico, CMLL is one of the bests. I remember his fight style in the air was pretty cool
Sometimes I don't understand why wwe hires a wrestlers and then they don't know what to do with them
Man, I cant believe I never noticed SIn Cara sometimes had a tattoo and sometimes didnt
Real Sin Cara vs Fake Sin Cara was a decent feud imo
Agreed! It was something different and I loved it as a kid 😂
You mean Sin Cara Blue vs Sin Cara Black
It was so good, The best imposter storyline by far.
Especially as it had genuine history from before WWE because OG Sin Cara took the Mistico name from Hunico Sin Cara
Would love to see a video on how Sami Callihan's botched baseball bat to Eddie Edwards' face saved TNA/IMPACT as their luck turned around after that.
I was kid when he was in the company I loved his design and moves. I don’t even remember his mess ups cause I loved the design.
Kane had his own themed lighting for his matches when he first came to WWE. He wrestled in red lights for a little while before WWE got rid of it.
Curtis axel and sin cara were wasted potentials
One of my favorite wrestlers
i was 11 when i watched Sin Caras debut on smackdown and in fairness i didnt notice any botches 😂 you see a cool mask highflying moves and youre good. think you have to be an adult fan to catch that kinda stuff
Curtis axel and sin cara were wasted potentials
With Mysterio being my favorite wrestler, I loved Sin Cara when I was a kid. His whole character and the blue and yellow thing was such a cool concept. Unfortunate to know all of this now as an adult.
a shame. i love luchadores and i'd love to see more of them in wwe.
"He landed on his head during his debut"
*looks it up on the same platform*
Oh, it's bullshit. Shocker.
Part of the prob in this is WWE is too strict on moves aswell
I was 9 years old in 1993, and I drew pictures of myself as a wrestler and the mask and tights designs are remarkably similar ! Blue or red with the gold lightening pattern. I was aware of Ultimate Warrior and Great Muta at the time. It was a funny surprise to see the Sin Cara character make his debut haha ! IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME ! Anyways, the second Sin Cara had solid matches with Tyson Kidd and Daniel Bryan on Smackdown, and then had some of his longer matches against Big E and Braun Strowman along the way, and after a long break, Sin Cara returned for a three week set with Andrade in the end of 2019 and that was the end of the character before Covid. They were never able to truly give him a push due to the botched entrances and finishes, and breaking his knee at the 2011 Survivor Series. I thought they might present him as some sort of mystical Ultimate Warrior / Undertaker with surprise entrances and stuff but he never climbed into a main position for an IC title feud against Wade Barrett or Cody Rhodes.
I remember being like "how does he fucking jump like that into the ring?!?" And then I saw the trampoline and I was so disappointed.
the trampoline was the craziest shit about him to me
man mistico was the shit idc he didn’t want to adapt there’s only one lucha libre style
I miss when wwe would sign people they would do those vignettes
Pushing Sin Cara was phenomenal. Triple h pick the right guy to be the next Lucha Dor and Rey mysterio. However it failed. I love Sin Cara, he should become either United States champion or intercontinental champion and feud some people who were former US and intercontinental champs.
Communication is key when you’re in the ring. His lack of it caused most of his botches throughout his career
My son has a Scooby-Doo movie with WWE characters in it ...and I thought sin Cara was a made-up character for the movie😂😂
As a WWE girl, he was one of my favorite wrestlers him, cena, rey, and kalisto all were. It really hurt me when he didn’t really continue with WWE (I was 6 when he started out) lol knowing what we know now. I’m glad he was one of my celebrity crushes 😅
