  • UK Train Crashes - "Safety By Design" - BR Carriage Crumple Zones - Narrated by Carol Vorderman
The third episode in our new series shows the development of carriage design by British Rail in the early 1990's after the previous crashes at Clapham, Purley, Cannon Street and Cowden which all involved BR Southern Region "slam door" stock based on the standard British Rail Mk1 design. Each of the previous incidents had experienced "overriding" between carriages and was thought to be a contributory factor into the increase in casualties per incident. The result of the experiment formed the benchmark for future train carriage design including the new Class 465 "Networker" trains ordered by Network SouthEast.

Interesting how it is using a class 47 and needed to go 47 mph

I believe there is a middle ground between privatisation and nationalisation. The day to day running of the railway should be nationalised. The day to day maintenance should also be nationalised. (As it is now) and the trains should be purchased privately and leased to the railway. (As it is now) sectorisation worked but it needed the government to take a hands off approach by allowing the railway to develop and budget a 5 year plan as it does now which then means that the railway isn't starved of investment as it was under BR. Privatisation in its current guise sucks. Nationalisation as it was also sucked. Buying new trains is a huge financial drain at around £1m per carriage!!!

I disagree. Either the whole railway should be nationalised), or it should be privatised. Maybe selling it off to different companies (infrastructure and trains alike) would be the best way of doing it.

Did they ever fully implement crumple technology in the end?

Yes. It's a standard safety feature in the design and construction of all modern railway vehicles. Most modern trains from the TGV Duplex to the Hitachi AT300 and the Siemens Desiro fleet all feature crumple zones built into their chassis.
