    My EDC is the Spyderco Manix 2. The thing I love about Spyderco is their blade shape. They pack as much usefulness as they can into small blade sizes with easy opening.

    I am also a Spyderco nut and have been since the 1994 when I got my first one at age 14, a fully serrated Endura .since then I've bought and lost many Enduras, Delicas and police models .I now keep them down in my pocket just like you do Mr. Hickok 45 ,and haven't lost one since,about five years on my current Endura 4, also you said it's not the company, but they are a true American success story ,ran by a father and son team and are innovators in the industry.

    Spyderco has been very good about replacing my earlier Enduras when the plastic (polymer) clip would break off. They even sent me a new one when I lost one in the mud while I was in Bosnia in 1996. Great company! I have tried carrying other knives but I am always back with the Spyderco.

  • @hickok45

    @codyaustinpemberton , Yeah, I agree that most of them are not that cool looking. To me, though, there's a certain "coolness" in something that functions so well, which is why I didn't resist Glocks for very long.
    That well-placed, incredibly functional hole in the blade is beyond cool for me, especially whenever I pick up a folder that doesn't have it. It's like picking up a bucket that has no handle or something.

    the benchmade 550hg griptilian also has a round opening hole. it was the first benchmade i ever had and it was a pretty exceptional knife. i am a spyderco lover though, they make good functional knives. i have several and some are pretty fancy but, i really like the plain old enduras, delicas, and the natives if you scratch it up it doesn't matter, it's a work knife made for the working man.

    Hi Hickok45
    I love your vidoes and this one made me laugh so much.
    I first started watching you about two years ago when I lived in the UK but at the time I could never imagine that one day I would have the freedom to be able to own and shoot some of the guns that you have tested in your videos.
    Then I got the chance to escape from the UK and come to your great and free country to live and work and I am able to experience the joy of owning and shooting some of the guns that I've seen you use in your videos.
    I love the Spyderco Delica and have one myself (jail time in the UK by the way!).
    I just wanted you to know that you can get Benchmade knives with the thumb hole which I also prefer and they make some great knives too.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  11 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    • @mofomartianp

      In the UK it's considered possession of a deadly weapon. If you have a good attorney you might slip with a fine, but if you have anything else on your criminal record, you're going to jail. Europe is fucked up.

    • @Draknareth
      @Draknareth 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not correct. UK knife law simply states that we can carry "without good reason" a knife with cutting edge less than 3 inches that is a non locking folder. In other words, you can carry what you like (assuming it isn't a banned weapon like a balisong or push dagger) as long as you have good reason to do so. Going camping and doing some bushcraft? 4 Inch fixed blade is not a problem.

    I know I'm 11 years late to the party but better now than never I suppose, this is the most logical and factual video I've seen on the old DupeTube in a while, rather refreshing. Although, I will say that my appreciation and fondness for Spyderco knives gos deeper than the opening hole but yes it does make the most sense why have studs and shit that potentially get caught up on stuff or break not only but add extra unnecessary weight albeit not very much but still why not SHED a couple grams as well as the potential to lose or strip a tiny part and notch a hole in the blade instead. Simple but brilliant truly is I agree. However, that and the high end steel selection aside, I just find they make a very high quality knife from tip of blade to butt of handle they just feel better and the best part is the low maintenance/ease of use.

    I carried one of those for years, then tried a variety of other knives including the original Spyderco Para Military, Kershaw Storm 2, Kershaw Leek (my 2nd favorite knife), and a Kershaw Blur 2 - of all them, the Delica 4 (saber ground VG-10) is by far my favorite.

  • @MisterSchlomah
    @MisterSchlomah 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is my favorite pocket knife! It is the hole that sets it apart from my other pocket knives, plus the compression lock system on the paramilitary is very nice and safer than a liner lock and easier to use than the AXIS lock on Benchmades.

    The Delica 4 is my favorite knife to carry as well and for the very same reasons. That silly hole idea is the greatest idea ever in a knife. I love the VG-10 steel to because I can get it razor sharp and it keeps and edge quite well. It is so light in your picket you forget you even have a knife until you need one and then, just like you I reach in to my picket and fish it out of all the other junk I happen to be caring in my pocket an cut what I wanted to be cut with out even thinking about opening it or anything, it just seams to be open already. Its a Great!! knife.

    A tip on deploying a thumbstud knife is to flip your thumb like you would if you were flipping a coin up in the air. Like how you put your thumb tip under your index finger before you flip the coin, you do the same but instead put your thumb on the thumbstud. The thumbstud should be under your thumb nail, about 1/8 to a 1/4 inch under your thumbnail. Then flick your thumb like you would with a coin. They also have flipper knives that you flip like a light switch and others with a button or an axis style lock which are pretty sick as well. But I love spyderco so you still on the right path.

    I have a Seiki-City Spyderco Dragonfly its blade is discoloured from hanging around my neck, great little knife, its dismembered hordes of cardboard boxes.
    Benchmade have a few models with the circular hole opening and of course the now discontinued/special edition Benchmade AFCK. The original design of the AFCK was to be manufactured by Spyderco. But they are expensive probably a $100 more than a delica , more for the discontinued models.

    The Delica 4 is a great choice as well, since it's small, but handy. An Endura doesn't have the same balance and is a lot thicker. Nope, for EDC I swear by my Delica. (note that my EDC is not for self-defense purposes though)

    Yes sir I have a collection of pocket knives and multi tools, gerber, leatherman, swiss army, buck and some not so known brands. But spyderco is the sharpest of them all, you could shave your hands with it. Its one of my favorite and i'm glad we have something in common. more power to you sir.

    The year is 2024 and I own 5 spyderco delicas. I have them in M4, hap40, super blue, k390, and 20CV steel. They are all wonderful

    I liked hearing your opinion (since you don't like the word 'review'). Like you, I've owned some very fancy blades; Gerber, etc. But my pocketknife of choice is a cheapie I bought at the gas station for five or ten bucks. It's serrated on half of the blade, which makes it easy to cut through cardboard or anything tougher. I can flick it open easily, like yours, and it's easy to sharpen. I'm sure it''s a knockoff of a more expensive knife; if I ever found the nicer version I might upgrade.

    @JohnWayneColt45 , You have good taste, as is indicated by your username. I hear this "Spyderco Snob" term but wonder where it comes from. As I look at good knives of this type, many of them cost twice or three times the amount of Spyderco. As I say in the video, even if these more expensive knives, which I'm sure are very well made, cost four dollars, I would not be attracted to them. It's that perfectly designed hole in the blade that makes all the difference for me.

  • @MikeReiner

    Nice. I'm not super fond of the style of that knife, but it seems to be very solid.
    I personally carry an Officer Suisse Swiss Victorinox, I love it.
    I wouldn't mind a decent folding blade since it's so fun to just 'flick' them open, but I like what I have.
    I absolutely cannot stand not having a knife, especially when I need one.
    It's always kind of satisfying when somebody needs one, and out of the entire room, you are the only person who has one.

    In addition to the great Spyderco hole (easily modded to an additional Wave opening with a ziptie) I also prefer the lockback design.
    The Centofante 3 looks better to me than Delica, Endura etc. and I love its handle material and texture. Feels great.

    I've carried the Spyderco Tenacious for years...Resilience and Endura 4 frn vg-10 and ZDP (didn't care for zdp version) I just ordered a Delica a few minutes ago...I think it will be a good compromise on size and comfort...I carried a kershaw 1550 ken onion ( great knife but needed lots of touch-up) and a 154cm Benchmade for years...it was a pain to sharpen at times...VG 10 seems to be an excellent compromise of hard working edge holding abillity yet easy to touch up and maintain ...I'm a Spyde

    I have the same knife Hickok and carry it everyday, very useful tool indeed. If you're not using the pocket clip you could remove it for a slimmer profile, someone probably mentioned that already. Anyway, thanks for showing us and keep up the great vids!

    You are right- on balance this is the best. The Delica. Only problem I think it is out of production and now hard to get.
    The blade is just under 3 inches which in many localities makes it a "pocket knife' and not a "weapon". And a bit more length does very little good. Only thing - I like the full serration not smooth. Any reason for no serration? That seems to cut better.
    The quality is great.

      @scullystie4389 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MsScruffy4 serrations are much harder to sharpen, and while they do some things better than a plain edge, they're not as versatile.

    I love your videos, hickok45! Glad to see you make a knife video too, since I love knives almost as much as I love guns. This video made me pull the trigger on the Spyderco Delica 4 today, and I am looking forward to it! I also wanted to ask. Do you also use any multi-tool like Leatherman or a Swiss Army Knife? I love those two brands as well.

      @@hickok45 your video was really what convinced me to get this, and now i'm really enjoying my Delica 4 a lot.. i rotate carrying it with my Buck 110. I consider the Delica to be kind of like the Glock of knives, and the Buck to be more like the 1911.. awesome knives. Thanks Hickok45!

    Spyderco make great knives for several reasons and there are things about this knife that make it great that you might not even realize. Cutting geometry is one, steel treat is another, price is another and ergonomics is another. You pick up the Delica and you love it and think it is the hole (deployment method) but I would bet that there are several things about the Delica that cause you to prefer it beyond the hole and you might not realize it. Spyderco does not make knife jewelry. Their intention is to make knives that people find they like to carry and use and they are very successful doing that.

    @zaco519 yep. it does not change the fact the blade has play. it has a bad steel and just because it says benchmade does not mean it is benchmade quality.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, once you try that nice big thumb hole a couple of times, everything else seems pretty lame, even some really expensive high-quality knives. Doesn't matter to me WHAT it is about them that might make them superior to the Sypderco, if they don't have that same large hole and open as easily, I'm not interested. That little nub, or whatever, just doesn't get it after you've gotten used to the Spyderco.
