Thanks Aaron for this. I’m a short story writer and bemoan the public’s and book industry’s waning interest in this art form. I studied 19th and 20th century American lit in college. Hawthorne was a terrific writer. I have a personal like of Cooper’s novels of the Deerslayer, Natty Bumppo. Last of the Mohicans was his best.Agree about Poe except Telltale Heart is good and Masque of the Red Death is phenomenal. Next up was Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain. Hemingway said Huck Finn was the birth of American Lit. I don’t agree with him. Loved Twains humor. The golden era of the American short story was the 20th century .
I'll have to check out Telltale Heart and Masque of the Red Death - thanks for the recommendations! Last of the Mohicans is also one of my favorites. The O'Henry stories, and a couple of other collections, still do a good job of promoting short stories, but it's true that it's tough to get an audience for them. Public tastes are always changing; maybe the form will return with a couple of well-marketed, well-received collections!
Love the time travel story of RIP! On my bucket list---visiting Nathaniel Hawthorne house in Salem, MA and I agree with you about Usher by Poe. I prefer his story The Tell Tale Heart.
That's a great idea for a trip - I hope you're able to make it soon! I have a number of friends who are big fans of Poe. He's not my personal favorite, but he's undeniably prolific.
@@aaronsalzman short storie are the greatest pleasure and your channel is already so good; so much book content is either just; vlogs, reviews/synopsis, or make no effort to be engaging - love the analysis so far
