Supporting Monsanto via purchasing Miracle Gro products is in direct contrast to buying peat free soil for enviromental reasons.
Miracle Grow isn’t a brand I would normally give my money to but it was the only option (peat free and ericaceous) at the time. I would rather support brands such as Dalefoot and Sylvagrow but unfortunately time and access was against me!
I would rather not support Miracle Grow for environmental reasons.

@God Seeker As Katrina mentioned in her comment above Miracle Grow isn't a brand she would normally give her money or support but maybe she couldn't find peat free ericaceous compost elsewhere due to demand and others having the same idea to repot plants that require it. I was responding to Gaz Whetherspoon's comment not Katrina's comment.
What's so bad about peat free compost? I just bought 100 bags to fill some raised beds and it's not peat free! Have I gone wrong?
I've been guilty of not looking after my blueberries for the last couple of years so they haven't been producing.
This year I plant to give them the love they need.

I'm growing blueberries this year for the first time. Two different varieties to aid pollination, Bluecrop (mid-season) and Duke (early). Growing in 30L containers. Can't wait for my first home grown blueberries!
I do in 38 litre containers (kind of small but wide). Filled with pine bark, pinecones, oak bark, small branches. Brough soil from a pine forest. As mulch I use living moss, that way the soil stays acidic
I'm across the pond in USA and started six blueberries and five honeyberries last year for the firs time. I grow Northern Highbush type such as Duke, Reka, Bluecrop, Hardyblue, Jersey and Legacy. Wildlife chewed off three blueberries to the ground. Placed a nursery order for six more 60cm tall plants: (2)-Bluecrop, (2)-Blueray, Rubel and Brigitta. Also placed an order for seventeen new blueberry starts to pot up for late summer/Autumn berries: Aurora, Toro, Chandler, Patriot (early season) and a Southern Rabbit-eye Pink Lemonaide with small bright pink berries.. I noticed during the video you have a grand smile, very pleasing to watch. I prefer the UK gardens due to the methods not influenced by chemical companies and brainwashing from advertising products.
I bought a bluecrop last year. I had no idea how beautiful blueberry plants are, and they have such a lovely autumn colour too.

I have 2 bluecrop 1 Chandler and I just added a pink lemonade! Last year was my second year of growing and I had bumper crop!🙂

I have three highbush blueberries in the food forest. We love them! I top dress mine annually with some soil acidifier and they're thriving. They mostly look after themselves here in zone 6b in Kentucky.

Hi, you mentioned in a comment that you don’t have a wireless mic. I would recommend the Rode Wireless Go. Just rig it with the appropriate cable (receiver to iphone). I’ve found the sound very good and it’s quick to set up.

That new pot looks magnificent with the Blueberry bush sat in it. I’ve trimmed my Apple Tree using your tips in your other video. I’ll need to go check on my two Blueberry bushes next. They’re young and small so not needing much yet - they’ve yet to flower or fruit even. One is Pink Lemonade, but I’d need to look up it’s sister variety.

You've inspired me to start my own little "garden" in my dorm! I've sowed some blueberry seeds, strawberry seeds, and cotton seeds. I don't have much space so they're growing on my desk with a grow light. So far, they all sprouted, though none of the true leaves have grown yet. Surprisingly, my blueberry and strawberry didn't need any stratification to germinate (maybe it's because they're freshly harvested from fruits?)
Thanks for your video. Your plot reminds me just a little bit of the set from Fraggle Rock that I watched from time to time as a kid. It made me smile when I realized why your plot seemed so familiar. It's very picturesque.

May I suggest that those in the UK go to Dalesfoot they sell compost that is made of sheep’s wool and bracken and it is very good.
Absolutely! I couldn’t buy from them at the time so I had to reluctantly use Miracle Grow 😖 I’m about to mulch my plot with Dalefoot’s compost but I also use Melcourt who also stock a peat free ericaceous compost!
I grow aronia (black chokeberries) and make wine with them, I like them because they aren't as finicky about needing acid soil as blueberries are, they don't have a lot of pest or predator problems, and are very productive. The drawback is that most people don't enjoy their taste when eaten raw and without sugar.

I just bought 3 blueberry bushes from waitrose. July August And September fruiting. Put them in pots with the same compost. Tried years ago in clay soil. Didnt work. Hoping for some tasty blueberries this time.
How did you get on with them?

Also, for a newbie, could you explain a bit about peat free products?
We've got Patriot, Bluegold and a poorly Bluecrop. No garden centres near here sell peat-free ericaceous compost so I've repotted the Bluecrop into composted bark mixed with sulphur chips and watered with an ericaceous fertiliser. Hopefully it works!

I've got 4 blueberries in an old snare drum, I need to treat them to a decent container this year, ceramics are expensive but well worth it though. Hope to have an abundance of blueberries this year 🥰🥰
Ceramics look beautiful but the downside (other than the weight) is they absorb moisture. I regret not lining the new one with a compost bag, like I did for the barrel. It will certainly help retain moisture in the summer months. I may repot it again before spring is truly here! 😅
@@homegrowngarden I'll surely take advice from your enthusiasm you express on your channel Kat....I've got 2 old water butts I'm planning on recycling also a metal container. If I use plastics on the alotment, I get the most of it, even when it perishes. I've got 2 water butts cut in 2, length ways, attached and using them.for raised bed this year. Improvisation at it's best 🥰🥰

This is a different subject i will comment on, i watched one of your video's from 2018 and you mentioned getting rid of the duck weed in your pond, i always have duck weed on my pond due to it keeping the sun out, so it does not get green algae building up in the water and also keeps the temperature down, also Bee's and other insect's can land on it to drink the clean water and it does not stop the Newts from spawning, i hope this information is helpful in a small way.
Why not have water lilies to block out some of the sun? My newts love to hide under the leaves.

I planted 2 pink lemonade bushes 3 years ago. They were slower to fruit but last year I picked the first real crop and they were delicious.

This reminds me to go put some chicken wire around mine so the bunny doesn't get to it before me, don't remember the name. I know this is probably a question I should know better than to ask but, did you make sure that compost doesn't have any pesticide already in it, I only ask because it's by Miracle Grow, who here in the states sells it with something in it. They started selling an organic soil a few yrs ago here and I've never seen peat free here either.
I need to start amending a place so that I can put my blueberries in the ground eventually. We had a heat wave and my plants were so stressed in the pots they ended up dropping all their blooms

We have Duke, Chandler and a german variety i can't remember the name of. We mulch with chopped up christmas trees from our neighbours every year.

I need to do my 8 which are a mixture of azure and mainly pink lemonade.
Your pots of berries look very good. I have three blueberries in pots and clipped some crossing branches off. These I cut into pieces and stuck in the pot with the bush. This spring I was totally surprised to see a whole ring of tiny sticks with tiny leaves on them. HURRAY! I have a burning question - I thought I needed two bushes that bloomed at the same time in order to have a nice crop of berries. I bought three different ones to extend the season and now I need to buy three more to bloom at the same time BUT do they need to be a different variety or just another plant of same variety?
I have 5 blueberry bushes in half-barrel pots about the size of what you have. Northland, Blue Ray, Sunshine blue, Duke and Northblue. Looking to add another 1 or 2 this year. Northcountry might be 1 of them and Chandler might be the other. Haven't decided on that yet.

I have had a lot of success from giving my Blueberry's Sulphur as a feed. I had one bush last year which was nearly dyeing with me feeding it tomato fertilizer. I did a bit of research on line and it was suggested to use sulphur powered. After giving it sulphur, it made a full recovery and almost doubled in size.
Ahh, do you grow yours in the soil? Sulphur lowers the ph of your soil so it sound like you amended it to become more acidic which is what blueberries need to thrive 😁👍
@@homegrowngarden The Blueberry is planted in the soil. Though, I did dig out the soil and put in its place ericaceous compost, but it did not do well - till I stopped feeding it Tomato fertilizer and replaced it with Sulphur Powder. Hope that makes it more clear.

You're so right, those colours work perfectly 😍 So, is this the right time of year for repotting blueberries? I got five plants about a year ago, three being very small still. I've got plenty of ericaceaous soil but do need some more pots (none of which will be as lovely as your new one though, it's quite special).
It’s absolutely the right time! Any root disturbance or damage leaves a minimal impact as the bush is about to go into its growing season. I would try to complete any repotting before the leaves burst from their buds. 😁

Hi Katrina! I have also two blueberries. They have been in ground, but now I'm contemplating on potting them. Do you think they would survive the winters in pot here in Finland? It gets really cold here, -20 is normal for us. Maybe I could drag them to my balcony, it has windows ( I don't know the right word) so it's a bit warmer there... My blueberries have not fruited in a few years, might that be because of light or soil? Glad if someone can give me some pointers, thanks!! I love your videos

Making a trip to a local blueberry u pick is a ritual too good to miss. I live in the south Willamette Valley in Oregon. We've got tons of u pick farms. I love to go even though I have a huge garden

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, it is always sad to have to prune off a nice healthy twig. I don't know if now it is the right time to propagate, never hurts to try 🙂.
Certainly hoping to add some highbush blueberry plants (because highbush plants are suited this area), most likely "Elliott" and "Duke" or "Patriot," because I can get those locally. Of course, we've been talking for a few years about adding blueberries to the food garden (which does include flowers and some herbs, yes, and a bit of fruit ---bramble fruits and rhubarb) and still haven't done.
And don't let any of the nay-sayers dishearten you: we all make the best choices we can (it's to be hoped!) at any given time, given the conditions. I have some Miracid ( (R) MiracleGro) and some MiracleGro Orchid Food, because those were my options based on access and affordability. Not my ideal, but had to do something, and I consider myself to be a conscientious person as well as one of conscience as I believe you to be, also.

Great video Katrina and I don't have blueberries because I prefer blackberries because they contain more antioxidants than blueberries but I will still eat blueberries if blackberries aren't available. I have the Loch Ness variety of blackberries in my allotment.

@@JamesBrown-mt5ru My blackberry is doing OK. I had to give it a pruning to control the growth in the autumn. I used the cutting to grow a new plant.

I love your videos ! You inspire me to try new things in the garden . I’ve always wanted to grow blueberries, however we are renting so I haven’t had a permanent place to plant them. Now I know I can plant them into pots and move them with me ! Won’t they in time grow into small trees ? Would they have to be removed from the pot and placed in the ground ?
Yay! Grow them in a container and take them with you 😁👏🏻 They won’t really grow into small trees if they’re in a container. They should remain a manageable size and yet still give you a bountiful harvest providing the pot is big enough ☺️ You won’t need to repot it each year into a bigger pot but once established I would recommend repotting every couple of years to give it fresh compost to keep it healthy!

One more question about blueberries in pots . I live in Oregon where we get snow very cold winters . Would I need to take the pots into the garage over the winter ?

Haha, I didn’t notice the camera slip 🙈 For those of us without acidic soil, growing in containers is the only way really! I would repot blueberries every couple of years, changing the compost for fresh stuff to keep it healthy and vigorous. As long as the pot is big enough it should remain healthy. Some varieties can grow very big but kept in a container their size is restricted by crops still plentiful 🙂

I would repot every couple of years with fresh compost to keep up the nutrients it needs. If your ground isn’t of an acidic ph it’s best to keep them contained.

April I believe! I do have plenty of rainwater saved in water buts. It really did pour with rain that night though so I didn’t want to use my reserves!

Plant dry ; set wet always.
Never cover the hole in a pot.The compost gets stuck around the pieces of claypot or pepples.The water can not drain well.Thats how you get rootrot.Yes compost will come out at first,but then it will settle.The water will drain better.That is a OLD garden myth.To cover the hole.
One of the reason I covered one of the three holes in the terracotta pot is because they were so big! I didn’t want all the moisture to run out. It’s also worth baring in mind that the pot, being made of terracotta will absorb some of the moisture too so I don’t want my plant to dry out. Maybe I should have lined that too with a bag 😅 I didn’t do it to the barrel as it only has one hole and is lined ☺️

Please explain why peat should remain in the ground.
Damaged peatlands are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, annually releasing almost 6% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Peatland restoration can therefore bring significant emissions reductions. The Irish used to harvest peat on an industrial scale! In Scotland (and elsewhere) it was a common domestic fuel but acquired on a very humble scale with no machinery. It is backbreaking work.

Peatland is a carbon sink, and when left undisturbed it traps carbon. When you dig it up it releases carbon into the atmosphere. “Known peatlands only cover about 3% of the world’s land surface, but store at least twice as much carbon as all of Earth’s standing forests.”
Not to even mention that peatland are huge ecosystems that support so much wildlife. In destroying them for peat extraction it’s just the same as woodland deforestation.

@@homegrowngarden I live in Minnesota and we're surrounded by bogs north to south....its not being harvested, most of the wetlands are protected, or are designated regional parks, such as the boundary water canoe area, or Superiir National Forest, and most you can't even walk through even if you wanted to, its too wet.....that doesn't prevent the State of Minnesota wanting to mine/disturb all these areas for iron ore, gold, silver, copper etc.. by foreign companies so Minnesota government can collect royalties, since all mineral rights are owned by the State. Do you see a double standard here? I think most of our peat comes from Canada or elsewhere. So all these coal-fired power plants weren't the real source of CO2 and Cows aren't the main source of Methane! A bunch of radical Professors making sure they have a constant source of government funding for goofing around all day! Rather than beating on America, look to South America and third world countries who seem to do the most damage, as they are deforresting to please China. We already sequester CO2 heavily here in the US, and I don't trust anything communist anti-America The Guardian writes. The Guardian needs to beat up on China and WHO who additionally also conducted biological warfare on us and the Western world! I think you should focus on that!
@@homegrowngarden One more thing....its been proven that Minnesota has gone through many cooking / warming cycles via earth core samples taken that showed Maples, Bass Woods, Ginko's have receded and regrown north to south based on climates cycles....again, this isn't anything new, but it is something these climate change junkies completely ignore, despite it's been happening for millen8als of years. Why, because they have an agenda...they need to glamorize and falsely create projects for power grab purposes, tax payer funded money, and so they can travel around the world on all expense paid vacations to proliferate their, in many instances, lies and over exxagerations of plain imaginary guess work!
