I still cannot get these out of my ears!!! I did switch over to the Tang Sancai ear tips this morning just for a little less pressure and they sound great. I am picking up all sorts of 3rd and 4th harmonics off of the guitar on "Invincible" by Tool. right around the 9:35 mark when everything comes in heavy. It is just mind-blowing. Good luck with the contest later today!!!
Loved the review, that was all basically how I felt. Deftones, TOOL (Pushit from Salival ugh), Gojira, The Ocean, anything textured or atmospheric is kind of wild. I saw these referred to as a "mini Canpur CP622B", which if true is super tempting for an upgrade path. It's weird going back to non-BCD sets after, the readjustment is real.
I tried the CVJ Aria Qimeng first thing this morning with "fresh ears" and it was too hard of a landing after the Fan3. It's definitely better than the Bidong and less expensive, but I still couldn't hang. I will have to gradually taper off of the Penon set apparently. lol
I had a similar experience. Some people say that don’t hear the BCD effect. I’m freaking gobsmacked by that. All I can assume is that they’re not getting the right contact with ear canal.
Fan3 was a great intro to BCD sets. Sounds like you need to audition the TSMR Shock and the new ISN EBC80. Still waiting for the Pula Anvil and DMA. I've heard great things about the Thie Origin as well. I'm all about BCDs now. Wish someone would do a full range planar plus bone conduction.
Haven’t heard a whole bunch of BCD IEMs but the BGVP Phantom sticks in my mind. Whereas BCD on MEST2 seems to influence bass and Fan3 influence mids the BCD on the Phantom seems to be doing something through mids and into the highs. Most interesting implementation I’ve heard. Pretty expensive though for an understated but weirdly enthralling set.
I might get my hands on the Anvil at some point soon. Going to try anyway. Hopefully on either a review or loaner set. I just cannot spend any more money right now. Just in time for Black Friday too! lolol
@BassDad8 yes that too 👀 You know which iem has no review yet ? HBB Punch..The graph is IDENTICAL to Gran Maestro I wonder how close is it in real life 👀
@ that may be worth checking out! I almost pulled the trigger on the FatFreq collab a couple of months ago, but after the Hades, I balked. I still might get the Deuce, but maybe the Punch should go first…
So glad you tested the screws... I was tempted to mess with them too... My theory was if loosen them can i adjust the BCD effect ... I emailed Penon about this.... They said no
Right when I thought I was set on the Yan (I sent you the cart and everything), you released this Banger of a video (pun very much so intended). Now the Yan isn't even in your top 5 😅. Decisions decisions
Oh the YAN is still in my top 5 for "2024" and so is the T10 (yes, I am counting it). It just doesn't quite make my all-time favorites top 5. It is still an awesome set, especially for the price. One word of caution though. My buddy has my set right now and he is having issues getting a proper seal. He knows what he is doing, so that is not the issue. it seems to be his ear morphology, and he doesn't have that issue with most sets. Just something to keep in mind.
@BassDad8 ah a proper seal huh? Well I'm sure he has an abundance of tips like we all do. I'm willing to take the risk and experiment. I appreciate the heads up for sure though.
I have the 10th and the Fan 3. I think you described the Fan 3 very well. It's a quite fascinating mixture of technicality and warmth/lushness. Penon tends to do sets like this in their newer tunings. They are trying to retain midrange lushness while at the same time achieving technical depth and extension. The 10th is such an interesting set because it's the first set I can remember listening to that was a combination of both of the following: really thick and full note weight, especially in the midrange, but excellent dynamics, clarity, and extension at both the top and bottom ends. Usually sets that are described as being extended at both the bass and treble end of the spectrum are 'V' shaped. But the 10th doesn't sound 'V' shaped to me. Mids are too full and lush, frequencies are too equally balanced, to be considered 'V'. We all know that KZ sets are infamously 'V' (which always means quite recessed vocals and somewhat "harsh" or "boomy" extension at both ends). The 10th is not like that. Difference for me: 10th is a little more lush, a little more like being in a studio that has excellent acoustics but also doesn't have much reverb. Things are extended, but there isn't a sense of being in a cathedral, where sounds have room to echo and travel. When you listen to instrumental music on the Fan 3 there is the "cathedral" experience. Especially if you listen to music recorded live (like jazz in a studio, or a live concert). You can actually hear the space that the notes have to travel before they "bounce" and return. This is clearly the BCD. While 10th has great space and imaging, you don't get this effect. Also, the 10th sounds less clinical than the Fan 3. I have a Pula Anvil 114 on the way. I suspect that the Fan 3 and Anvil might end up being pretty similar. We'll see.
Did you have any issues with pressure build-up? The Fan 2 caused me extreme pressure build-up issues and I had to sell it off. With the weird artifact on the graph...do you think it had something to do with the screw being looser or tighter on the left side? I would guess that something like that would affect the fr graph. EDIT: You answered that around the 7:00 minute mark.
@@hazi5961 the pressure build up isn’t nominal, but it’s not terrible either. I am pretty sensitive to it based on my experience with some other sets that are much worse. To say it’s nonexistent would be false, but I can handle it well enough without the use of “pressure releasing” tips like the Sancai. I think you’ll be fine… I think…
Great review again. Sounds a lot like the DMA to me. How would you compare the two? (Tried the DMA on pure 6/7N copper yet? ;-) that does it for me). Thanks a bunch.
@@JRVick So firstly, thank you for the cable rec. I did order a pure copper 7N with mmcx for the DMA. Unfortunately, neither the cable, nor the DMA have arrived yet, so no direct comp is possible at the moment. That comp is definitely worth a shorter video of its own when I can manage it. I am looking forward to it with the upgraded cable on the DMA. Can’t say enough about the Fan3 though. I can’t believe it’s a descendant of the Fan2. They’re not on the same plane of existence.
Still sitting at #2. I haven't decided if I am going to include the BGVP DMA as it was released in late November 2023. If I do, then it might slide to #3, but that is as far as it will fall for 2024 and it will be in the top 5 of my "all-time" list as well.
I got the Anvil. Have to listen more, but the Fan 3 is just a better IEM. More resolving, better vocals, and better fit. I tip rolled for an about an hour to get Anvil fit right. Much harder to get it to seat properly for bone conduction to work. It’s good. But just not as good. And I’m not getting the sense of space and separation that I get from the Fan 3. More later after a longer session.
@GrahamDennis-q2i thanks for the input! I mainly listen to old Grateful Dead concerts, and the Anvil seems to just liven up the old recordings in a way that the 61t, pula02, and heyday does not. Those are all good iems, but the anvil seems to take the shows higher- can follow individual players better, more 3d sound like i am standing behind Jerry and Bob and drummers behind, jerry playing on right and Bob on left. If the fan 3 does that better then it may be last iem i need since the dead are what i listen to 90% of the time.

@@BassDad8 those are the tips I use with them too... The wide bore version
@@reflection1119 speaking of wide bore, I am on the vocal ear tips that came with the Idun 2.0 now. The deeper insertion makes them even wilder!!!
Great review. I also just love my fan3 as well…it is just amazing….
Wow.😮 Sounds to be impressive all around. I'll be keeping this one in mind for sure. Thank you for another great review! 👍
Funny story about the screws 🪛😂
Penon fan boys unite🙌🏾. If there’s a Fan 4 in the works in the next year or two, I don’t know how they’ll top this one…but I’m blind buying anyway!
Fan3 really is an amazing set.
Also, thanks for the shoutout 🤣
