  • Managing your passwords can be extremely frustrating. In this video we will look at Apple’s iCloud Keychain as a method to create, save and manage your passwords across all of your Apple devices.
The biggest benefit of using iCloud Keychain on your iPhone, iPad or Mac is the ability to use FaceID or TouchID and not have to manually input anything! Because of the integration, you can easily create a strong password and just use your FaceID or TouchID to access any account.
We will also look at more secure options of Verification codes, Microsoft Authenticator App and Apple’s Hide My Email feature that allows your personal email address to be hidden by website and companies.

What a great and thorough job of putting all this together. I've been wanting to set up Keychain for a few years and kept blowing it off. This video is so easy to follow and will help people (specifically Apple device users) get set up with this functionality. Thanks for putting this together!

Hi Joel … I have really been enjoying your videos. Thanks for creating them.
I just watched a video on TH-cam that took the position that KeyChain was not a good option because KeyChain doesn’t have its own password that you, as a user set. If your phone falls into the hands of the bad guys it takes them about 20 minutes to break your passcode and then they would have access to all your passwords.

I appreciate that @Francesca Faulkner! I used to use 1Password and Google Passwords, which both worked great, but the ability for iCloud Keychain to integrate with FaceID and TouchID is a deal breaker for me! It works so well!

The “Hide My Email” feature is also cool because outside of that use-case where it prompts you with “sign in with apple” you can manually generate “fake” iCloud emails to sign in anywhere and even use the same one for multiple accounts.. and forward it to your email. Also you can modify which email these get forwarded to so they don’t even have to clutter up or potentially compromise your primary appleID email. Suffices to say, I’ve got junk emails for my junk emails.

Joel, an absolutely great explanation of Passwords. Thank you again so very much. You really have the knack of explaining it so well. My1Password account has expired and I am choosing not to renew and use Keychain instead. Have an M2 Air and iPhone 13. How do I go about changing/updating my old passwords in keychain since I do have a warning of the sites being compromised.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  ปีที่แล้ว

I appreciate you and your kind words @Rob Mo!
There's no real magical way to update old passwords in mass. Here's what I did. I exported all my passwords to a spreadsheet and then I was able to see which ones had old passwords and not strong ones. Then it's pretty much a manual process from there. I would click on the URL and do a password reset for each one.
It's time consuming, but well worth it in the end. Do it little by little and just keep record on your spreadsheet.
Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

Can you do a video about the Auto-Lock feature. On all my Apple devices Auto-Lock always locks them way sooner than the time I set them to. For instance, if I set to 5 minutes it dims at 2min 20sec and then locks at 2min 30sec.

I use Bitwarden in conjunction with Apple's system. Because every now and then, Apple's system fails to record the password. I hate that they don't let even let me see the password as it's being created. And the Bitwarden password generation gives me choice as far as options, because some sites won't accept the Apple's suggested password.

However, when I move to changing my password on my iPhone 12 mini, it doesn't auto fill and it doesn't give me the option to change the password. It is running Version iOS 17.03. Is it possible that my phone is too old?

I expect I am missing something important. But from what I think you said in the video, if I login to my computer, I have, in effect, also logged into Keychain. If I have a weak computer login, then I also have a weak Keychain login. How can I set the system up so that I can have a weak computer login and a strong keychain login? Also does using keychain mean that every machine/device that is on a given Apple Id is also in keychain. Again, this seems like another reason for having a different login for keychain.

I stumbled onto your video this morning and thought it was very good and very thorough. I was actually searching to find out what to do when your KeyChain passwords are not synchronizing between your devices. I've spent a couple hours talking with tech support at Apple and was told that my case would be escelated but I'm still waiting for them to get back to me with a solution. It really is disconcerting having such an issue and wondering if all of my data stored on iCloud is synching/working the way it is supposed to work. You don't really know what you don't know... UGH!!! Seams that there is a lot more stuff in iCloud that what I initially thought. I see you have a couple videos on iCloud that I'll have to check out. Have you had any issues with KeyChain passwords synching?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Tom Cawoski!
I'm really happy you stumbled on my channel! I do have a lot of videos related to iCloud, Apple Photos and mainly Apple Apps and such!
I'm kinda curious on what issues you're having.
What device did you create the saved keychain on? How many devices do you have? What it's syncing? What iOS version are you on? Do you have a Windows or Mac computer?
Let me know if you got this resolved, or comment back with some more information and maybe I can help. I have been using iCloud Keychains for a while and there are some weird things I encounter while trying to create one, but it's usually an issue of the website. I've never had an issue with any syncing of passwords.

@@Learnwithjoel Since my original question, I have watched a couple of your iCloud and other various videos of yours and they're done very well, and very helpful. The other interesting one was on Time Machine - perhaps another time for that discussion. I'm a musician/mixing engineer/producer just to give you an idea of my involvement with Apple products. No Windows devices for me - I left the dark side when I got my first Mac!!! lol...
I have four Apple devices currently, MacBook Pro (Early 2009), 2nd gen iPad, Mac mini (late 2012) and an iPhone 12 Pro - soon to get a Mac Studio!!! I'm really guessing that my issue is related to the fact that three of my current four devices are more than 10 years old even though they all have the latest OS that they can run. I was initially only having a keychain issue where passwords stored in Keychain weren't synching up across my devices but I was mainly using my Mac mini and trying to go to websites that required an ID/password when I discovered the problem. I later discovered that my Voice Memo's and my address book were not all synching properly. Again, I suspect the age of my devices. Who knows if anything else wasn't synching - you just don't know what you don't know. I have talked to Apple senior advisors several times and we went through several troubleshooting steps which pretty much weren't conclusive. I ended up saving all my voice memos to my computer and manually cleaned up my address book. I'm now seeing the same number of contacts in my address book and same number of passwords stored on iCloud on my iPhone and Mac mini. The other two will most likely be going away in the near future.
This has all been a bit disconcerting considering you don't really know what all iCloud is really synching and it really doesn't tell you when things get out of wack either. Apple isn't much help in terms of available resources to tell it's users what all the gory details are in what iCloud is actually doing. Steve Job's big thing was that "It just works!!!" That's fine until something doesn't work the way they were designed. In this case I had to talk to several techs because even their tech people aren't consistent in doing their troubleshooting. Oh well, issue is resolved as far as I know...

A really good video, teaching information. Fairly well-paced (so MANY others simply race through).
Also, you actually SHOW where the options are, which screen and you scroll up or down as needed (again, so MANY others simply assume you already know where & how).
One point I wish you had given more info: ‘Use Another Service’ such as using FaceBook or Google or Apple to actually access…
Does this ‘share’ info from one to the other?
Does Apple now know about Chipotle?
Does Chipotle’s now know about Apple?
If so, WHAT info do they share?
I’m a fairly new user of the Apple Ecosystem, having been attracted by the tight integration between phone, tablet & desktop.
Google/Android really does not have this.
And I don’t use Windows, I use Linux on my desktops & laptops.
Now I also have a (newer 2020) 27” iMac, with a couple of older (2012) iMac Minis for practicing/experimenting.
also have the Apple Watch (first watch in twenty years!).
Also a current iPhone 13 Pro Max (alongside my Samsung Galaxy Note), all to help me learn.
It is fantastic (actually, to me, it is Science Fiction) that I can text, talk and video with my family, no matter WHAT Apple product I am using…
iPhone iPad iMac Watch….. us more mature folk remember Dick Tracy’s “Wrist Phone”!!
I surely wish Apple showed more ‘Linux Love” for us Boxen Fans.
    P.S. Subscribed. Thanks.

Or are all these fine-tuning settings for all passwords also stored in iCloud, not only with the help of a computer can you see their display and be able to edit? Hi @Jugin27!
iCloud Passwords works on any Apple Device. It saves the information in the iCloud Keychain. You do not need a computer to use this feature on your iPhone. You could just have an iPhone and take advantage of this concept.
The Mac can see slightly different information, but it is not needed.

      Great question @Curtis Saunders!
I don't have a video on this topic yet, but I will eventually!
You would want to use the feature called "Find My".
This allows you to log into www.icloud.com and track where your device is at. Theres actually an app called Find My for iPhones/iPads and the Mac.
Long story short, because all of the Apple devices a user would have uses the same Apple ID, it allows you to track, lock and erase any of your devices. It's pretty slick!
I'll link an Apple Support article below for reference:
Use the Find My app to locate a missing device or item

Great tutorial. How safe do you think keychain is? If someone unlocks your phone wouldn’t they then have access to all your passwords ?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks @Kylie and great question!
So assuming that whomever unlocks your phone either knows the passcode, steals your fingerprint while sleeping, or forces you to have your eyes open for FaceID, then yes they would have access to all of your passwords.
But really that would be no different than having your passwords stored in Google, 1Password, LastPass, etc. Phones today hold so much important information that it really can be a disaster if someone with cruel intentions gets it.
So what options to users have? (I'm not recommending anything specifically, but just calling out things as food for thought as I think this is an awesome question and great conversation starter)!
      A hand written journal/notebook
      Post-It notes
A lucky brain that is able to mentally remember everything
Another digital App (Google, 1Password, etc)
A word document or other digital app with a separate password other than device password
I'm really looking forward to some of the upcoming security features that Apple is bringing to passwords, but then again, if someone has all of your info on the device, it may or may not defeat the purpose.
I think the best thing users can do is keep a secure complex passcode/password on their devices and turn on other security features like two-factor authentication or two-step verification. I think this will always be a cat and mouse game with security.
I hope my rambling makes sense! Thanks so much for watching!

  • @digger26

Joel. Tough to watch for me. Here are a few reasons. It is dated now and I know you are aware of that but I liked the recommendations and wanted to try you. My operating system is different as I am using a macbook air. use google chrome and not safari as a browser (if that matters). Also, I have subtitles on as I have a bit of difficulty hearing you clearly so I can't see what you are doing behind the displayed words. Hope some of this is helpful in making future videos.

      Hi @diggergrad!
I appreciate the feedback. The video is a little dated, but still relevant for users running the same operating systems.
If Google Chrome is your primary browser and you don't use Safari on your Mac, then this video wouldn't be much help. iCloud Keychain Passwords primarily work for Safari. Google has their own password management within their browser.
As far as the subtitles go, I unfortunately don't have any control on the placement of those.
THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know!

Apple should add categories so you can organize your password to a personal folder, then have a business folder, and etc.

Yes, you should be able to do the same thing with mobile apps and financial websites/apps.
I use iCloud Keychain to create strong passwords for all my bank, stock, crypto accounts. I pretty much use it for every website and app. So you should be able as well.

Yes @Rob Kelman, it's designed to be for safari, however there is an extension you can integrate if you use Google Chrome and I believe Microsoft Edge. I'll link it down below for reference:

Thats how people get hacked! Putting your passwords in the "system" means they are packaged in a place where it can get hacked. I know you'll say it cant get hacked.. and this is true, until it does. No Thank You.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  ปีที่แล้ว

I won't argue with your theory on that @RANC! I think with any online system from any company like Apple, Google, 1Password, LastPass or anything else there is always a chance of being exploited and hacked.
My biggest feedback would be for users to understand the risk and find what's best for them. Some users like good ol' fashioned pen and paper notebook filled with their passwords and such and that's cool too. Whatever works.
I appreciate your insight and contribution!
