It'll be great to make a video using this as your main vlog camera, the auto focus is pretty solid and many creators would probably use it for that. Although you'll probably need to grab a 20mm. I pre-ordered my Zf when the first batch was released and I haven't looked back. It's in my opinion, the best street camera on the market right now.

Thanks for this video, it was very informative and interesting. It’d be great if you could do a long term video review of the Zf. BTW, Viltrox makes Z lenses with an aperture ring. Granted, they may not be as good as the Z lenses in every respect, but for the price, they offer good value, from what I’ve heard.

Man, I absolutely hate this narrative that creatives hated Nikon. It's a legacy company that produced some of the greatest film and DSLR cameras. Just because they were late to the mirrorless party didn't mean they weren't a good company. They had to prioritize their existing customers who were at the time older professionals locked into the F-mount system. They are and were a distance the third biggest camera company and without the huge budget that Sony or Canon had. Their gears were made for pros and had a longer shelf life which means they didn't benefit from yearly new sales. Nikon consistently ranks in the top 10 of all companies for companies like eBay. The only "hate" I see is from the circlejerk online from Sony fanboys. I always used Nikon and know that whatever they put out, it's pretty darn good.

Yeah they were late to the game and now the Z8 and Z9 are the best value cameras on the market honestly. People are really sleeping on Nikon. But you're right, most of the hater noise is from Sony fanboys. Real pros know.

Um... *nice example for a consensus bias: I don't care "where a company ranks" AT ALL - I want reliable tools!* I'm a Nikon user and Nikon fanboy since 1980. First digital camera was a 3,0MP Cybershot 995 (2001) - which had awesome build and image quality, prints were sharp up to 30x40cm. Dunno, but even he old "5000" was also very good (5MP) - but none of the cameras that came after that had a "wow-to-price-ratio" that would justify a purchase, until very recently. I had tried some of their consumer cameras in the 2010s and they were simply abysmal: great specs on paper but either unusable or of shoddy design/manufacturing quality, with some of the models dying for no apparent reason* by the 10,000s - without Nikon taking any responsibility. So I ended up with Sony and the cumbersome Sigma Merrills. I love my old Nikons and I can't understand why they never made a no-nonsense / no frills mirrorless workhorse like Fuji and others did.
*| usually *dry solder points and always in the same location*, as confirmed to me by a Nikon service guy in 2019...

      @dragonic99 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Totally agree! I don’t care what people think about the Nikon 1 system too, it was actually an amazingly good and innovative system that suffered from stupid marketing and pricing. The Zf is actually not something too different from what they used to do. Nikon always catered for weird niches and nostalgic value/legacy since the film days (Nikon SP 2005 re-release e.g or the Nikon Df.) when they try to innovate with groundbreaking tech like the Nikon 1, nobody pays attention and it backfires. They were actually forced to do what everyone thinks is “innovation”. The Zf is amazing, but innovative and different it is not.

I agree. I never understood the 'Stigma' that Nikon has in certain circles of the internet. I'm shooting on Fuji/Sony, but I borrowed my mate's Z6 II and it was and absolute joy to use. Pro photographers in youtube never made fun of Nikon. It was only that Sony shill, Jared Polin who started making fun of Nikon for not having the best autofocus (while completely ignoring the image quality). And then others like Tony Northrup started bashing Nikon.

Nikon have produced some of the greatest and most gorgeous cameras of all time - F3, Fm2, D3, D700… just to name a few. The F4 introduced autofocus to SLRs and also looked like a supercar, because it was designed by supercar designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

    Great video!
I have been a Nikon shooter since 1988 when I picked up a Nikon FG 20 and a couple of lenses and a bunch of film...
Since then I have shot with a lot of other brands of cameras but I stuck with the F-mount over the years and eventually went digital and professionally shot with: D200, D3s, D800/D810, etc. and for fun I would shoot film (still do once in a while). Initially, I wasn't thrilled with the concept of mirrorless let alone the Z6/7 but once I picked up a Z6 I've was sold.
During the transition I made between DSLR and Mirrorless I kind of missed having fun with my cameras and film got more expensive so I bought into the X-Mount system. The manual controls breathed new life into my GAS and I'm now shooting professionally with the Z mount and I use the Fuji XT3 and X-H1 for some professional work and most of my fun, street and landscape work.
That delay of not only me but Nikon dipping into the mirrorless world wasn't a big deal but I'm at a small quandary now in the sense that I really enjoy my Fuji's (along with their functional grips, small size, plenty of glass) but I also have ample Z mount glass and the ZF is calling my name. If there is such a thig as a "positive" quandary I guess I may be in one.
My next Z purchase will either be the Z9 or the Z6iii (or whatever it is named) and then I'll have to decide on selling off all of my Fuji stuff and getting the ZF - or - I stick with the X mount glass and grab an XH2.
It's a great time to be a photographer

I have the ZF as well and I love it. Adding the Small Rig grip to it helps a lot. I am more on the features this camera has to offer over the retro style. Because of this, I'm not looking to shooting with this camera with manual lenses and so forth. I'm using different lenses, big or small, and treat it just like any other modern camera. Although the style does make this camera unique.

More pro's use Nikon than any other camera....Ill leave it at that. Once you shoot Nikon for photos its tough to move away from. The ergonomics and menu systems are much better than any other brand. With that being said - every camera brand can give you amazing photos and video.

    • @stevendente9270
      @stevendente9270 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

For me, Nikon was my system through the DSLR days. I would not shoot any other system then. However, the data shows that the old Nikon Pro user reference is very much yesterday and no longer valid. As an example, Lens Rental is the largest camera equipment rental company in the world be a good margin. The primary customers for them are Pro photographers whether stills or video. Their lens rental statistics have long been regarded as a valid benchmark for what equipment pros are using in their work. Nikon fell so far behind in mirrorless that it has basically fallen off the charts. Nikon runs between 4% and 8% of the rental market. Which is unsurprisingly (history shows the correlation between rentals and sales) close to its sales market position (even lower in mirrorless). Not one piece of Nikon equipment lens, body or otherwise even makes the top 20 list anymore. Statement that the "More pro's use Nikon than any other camera" is not supported by the data ( Do you have data for that?). This is not to bash Nikon's latest releases of the Z8/9. They are excellent products. Nor is a criticism of the Zf which I really like the looks of. But you statement is not supported in the current market. The deficiencies in the early Nikon mirrorless releases has damaged Nikon in the market tremendously. It will take many years, and likely never for Nikon to re-establish its former position in the market. Statement like yours are just factually incorrect.
      www.dpreview.com/articles/8067381772/lensrentals-most-rented-cameras-lenses-2023
The statement that Nikon has the best ergonomics and menu system is a subjective thing. That may be true for you, and I won't argue based on that. But even longtime Nikon fans like Thom Hogan now say that is no longer the case, and in many ways Nikon has fallen behind Sony and Canon in that regard.
Nikon is no longer the industry potato, but still has a long way to go in its recovery.

So many of them complaining about the ergonomics, no easy access to auto iso, and not enough function buttons. And i thought to myself , they are all missing the point. This camera is perfect for the photographer who wants to be more involved in the process of taking a photo. It is the closest to the film shooters experience just without the film. The Zf is a highly capable camera in photo and video and could definitely be used professionally but i agree with on this, I think pro cameras are pro cameras for a reason. They will be more efficient in that setting. Yes I would love to hear you thoughts long term. I always appreciate your insight.

I upgraded to a Z f from D7200. I’ve been using it for everything from landscape, to birds in flight, to candid party snaps, and finally portraits.
If you set up the i menu, the function button, and red dot button, it’s pretty flexible. It can excel in all of those fields and more. Sure, there are some things that don’t have buttons, and some people are a bit precious over the lack of buttons. But I can shoot plenty fine in my iPhone using the on screen menu.
Once the Japanese grip comes to the west I’ll buy that and it will address my only outstanding issue which is that it’s a little awkward with bigger lenses.

I have the Zfc and I like the retro, film setup. I think the retro setup appeals to some and we will find it easier to use than a normal mirrorless camera. The retro setup, like anything, has its advantages and disadvantages.
I think a lot of Nikon hate is not about the quality of the gear but more they weren't the hip brand every thought was 'better than sliced bread'. If you want a rant, ask me about some of Canon's commercial antics. Nikon was a little slow to the mirrorless market but they have come out with some excellent gear.

This is an interesting discussion that I sometimes like to think about it too. I’ve been a Canon user for many years, I made a quick turn to Sony and I ended on Fujifilm. From my experience I concluded that we tend to stick with a brand that serves us well but indeed there are several tools to different tasks. Maybe Nikon has 60 year old clients because the gear is reliable and the glass is good. My Canon gear was superb: full frame sensor with L glass, what could go wrong? But I got tired of carrying so much weight on my back and I like to consider myself a traveler photographer or more documentary style, I found myself enjoying to explore manual modes on Canon and Fujifilm came as a natural choice of lighter gear offering me the possibility of slowing down my pace and focus on the experience rather than the final result. I lost the full frame but I had a reason and that’s not because Canon is worse or I guess (in this case) I Nikon is old. In this particular case I just agree that if Nikon is trying to approach Fujifilm concept, the lense should offer aperture ring to complete the triangle (shutter, aperture and iso).

Mirrorless was exactly what Nikon needed.
They tried the retro look back when there were pretty much only DSLRs around.
But those were way to clunky to feel like a proper 35mm Nikon F.
The zF and the APS-C version, feels absolutely like the older F-cameras.
But yeah, an F-style specific line of lenses with proper aperture controls on the lens and focus distance meters.

I’ve never heard that anyone “hate” Nikon.
Personally, I loved my Nikon FM2 (a very robust, good and purist camera - the only thing depending on battery was the light meter - still have it) for years until analogue photography became history, but after trying an early Nikon digital camera (D40) and being very disappointed, I switched to Canon and have been very happy with them. Have not tried recent Nikons though, or any of the reportedly excellent Sony cameras.
However, I am open for any brand as long as it is very good (better than what I have) and as long as I can afford it (it is no problem finding the “perfect” camera if you have a bottomless bank account). 😊

I like these vintage style cameras. I primary shoot film, but occasionally I'll barrow my mom's Nikon DSLR. Because of using old, manual film cameras, I prefer to shoot manually, or at least use my manual lenses. However, I've found setting iso, shutter speed, aperture a pain with digging through menus. I'm sure there's easy short cuts I could learn or set, but I don't use it enough. If I were to get a digital camera, it would be one of these where all the exposure controls are tactile dials like on the old film cameras.
And at 3:00, I would probably gone with a vintage Nikon E Series lens. Maybe the Ol' Reliable 50mm. Or Nikon's current "nifty fifty" is really similar and has an aperture ring.

It depends on the type of photography you are involved in and the focal lengths you use, on my ZF my favorite lens are the Voightlander manual focus lens, if you need auto focus glass the f1.8 primes are great, if you're on a budget I have the 28mm and 35mm Viltrox lens and are great for the price, one thing that makes the body better to use is the Small Rig grip/ l plate combo, it gives enough of a grip and the bottom plate allows you to mount the camera on a tripod. Before I purchased the ZF I added a Fujifilm XT5 and XH2, prior I had a XT3 that I bought lightly used from B&H photo, I enjoyed the XT3 and when Fujifilm added the 40mp sensor in the XH2 and XT5 I bought both, I use the 100-400mm Fujifilm lens on the XH2 and XT5 is used with smaller prime and zoom lenses. I went the same route with the ZF and Z6Ii. The Z6Ii works better with large glass and the ZF is with more compact glass. I tried using the 100-400mm Fujifilm lens on the XT3 and the lens just over powered the camera it worked but was not a good fit. The ZF is the same thing, you can use large glass but it doesn't work as well as the Z6Ii or other Z series camera bodies.

I'm on Fuji XT-5 absolutely love my camera. However i think the Nikon Zf looks really nice and the fact he button and dials use real brass and will age with time is a nice touch. As for looks i certainly think Nikon did a extremely solid job on this camera and is very tempting , TBH. What would be amazing is that Nikon came out of the blue with a full frame (RANGE FINDER) Fujifilm X100V competitor with a retro look. It would be a shocker but also I'm sure it would be a solid hit! I hope Nikon keeps making cameras like this it pushes innovation and competition! Great video Evan.

As a longtime Nikon shooter I was set on buying the Nikon Zf, but once I saw it in person I ended it going with the Fuji X-T5 instead for the more comfortable ergonomics and smaller/lighter form factor.
The Nikon Zf is a beautiful tank of a camera, extremely well made and superior to the Fuji in several ways, but it's bigger and heavier than I expected and I didn't like the grip - and I didn't want to add more bulk by adding a 3rd party grip. That said, if my primary purpose for the camera wasn't travel and street photography, I'd have chosen the Nikon.

Many thanks for your review, and many thanks for your nuanced view on this new camera. I think it would have been cool if you would have had access to the FTZ lens mount converter and some classic AI-S glass (maybe the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S, the 50mm f/1.2 AI-S or the 105mm f/2.5 AI-S, well, any AI-S glass really) for some manual focus and manual aperture experience. All the Nikon Z cameras support focus peaking, so manual focus is a breeze. I have the Z Fc (the older crop sensor brother of the Z F), I like it a lot and I use it often in combination with AI-S glass. So I can carry a Nikon 35mm film camera body (in my case, the FM3A or the F100) and the Z Fc, and use the same glass on both cameras. I don't know if that is so easy with other camera systems. The downside of my system is that the wide angle glass on 135 format becomes something like 35mm to 50mm equivalent on crop sensor, so I'm saving up for a full frame digital Nikon (like a 2nd hand D810). For telephoto lenses, they just become a bit more tele and the corner issues disappear. Anyway, it's not about the racecar, it's about the driver, right?

    Few things:
First off Nikon hasn’t been irrelevant. The D850 and D500 are the best DSLRs ever made and are still being made and sold. They are killer cameras.
Secondly, the idea this is a ‘slow’ camera is absurd. It has one of if not the best auto focus systems in the market , super fast and reliable subject detection, manual lens focus confirmation, and pretty fast shutter speed. This isn’t a slow camera.
Lots of wrong Nikon related info in this video, that being said he’s right that this is a great camera, and maybe some people think “ah finally Nikon is back” are just stuck in the retro film wannabe social circles ..

I have a Z6ii and the ZF as well as a D850...I sorta disagree with the having to slow down bit. I grew up with dials and when they disappeared for menu dives and scroll wheels I didn't like it. I still don't. I still prefer to change settings with dials because for me it's actually quicker. Part of the `quicker' is I can easily see and know what my settings are without having to go looking for them on LED screens, so much so, that my Z6ii now sits on the shelf beside the D850 unless I need high MPs. There's no nostalgia for film here. I used to run my own darkroom but digital means the end of all that - alleluia brother!
Agree about aperture rings on the lens. Apart from Viltrox(?) I don't know of any native Z mount auto focus lenses with aperture rings on them.
I think for me as a Nikon shooter since the D700 ( I used to use Canon and Contax film cameras before that) is that this camera is Nikon's best effort to match Sony and Canon AF ability (Expeed 7 processor inside) at a reasonable price (Z9 and Z8 are just way too expensive - I can get the same AF performance from Sony and Canon much cheaper)
Also this camera's IBIS is outstanding. For me it's a thoroughly professional camera. But yeah, of course, that's just me.
What I don't like is the lack of a grip. Ugghhh! Not everything retro is good (yeah I know - just me again, lol)

The Viltrox and Voightlander glass just looks like they belong on this camera and while the Voightlander lens are manual focus they have electrical connections that send all lens information to the camera and have focus conformation so they work as well as any Nikon lens in manual focus mode. I have several different cameras and glass that I use for different types of photography but when I want to slow down and get totally involved in the photography process the ZF and a Voitelander lens is my choice.
