The Bangles were actually a much better band than this song would have you believe. They were very 60s-influenced (Beatles, Byrds, Hollies, Love), and wrote original songs that were in that vein. But once they were signed to a major label, they had to play the game and have hits, and this song was them playing the game. Tracks that were much more indicative of their real sound include Hero Takes A Fall, Dover Beach, In Your Room, Waiting For You, and their covers of Live (The Merry-Go-Round) and September Gurls (Big Star).

One part of the Walk Like An Egyptian music video that stood out to me and many others was the close-up on Susanna Hoffs' eyes as she looks side to side. According to the video's director Gary Weis:
"Susanna apparently suffered from a little stage fright and to overcome it she would often focus on individual audience members. We did not even have an entire audience, just a small group to stand near the stage with their arms up to make it look like it was a concert. We had cameras focused with close-up shots on each of the girls and that's when we captured Susanna looking at an audience member on the left and then switching to another one on her right. It was just sort of luck, but when I saw it I knew we had to put that in the video."

On recording this song, The Bangles had a dispute with their producer about who was gonna sing the song. Drummer Debbie wanted it, but the producer was like: "no way, we can't have a drummer taking the lead vocals - that doesn't look good on stage. Susanna should sing the song." As a form of protest, the other 3 members all took their part of the song - and Debbie did the whisteling part.
But that's why in the live footage in this video you see Debbie at the front of the stage as well, they still regarded it as her song 🙂

I loved this song as a teenager. When I had kids of my own, I introduced them to this song during chore time one week.
I always tried to teach them to find the fun in the boring/dreary parts of life. They dusted and mopped and washed dishes like an Egyptian to this song. We had a blast with a costume contest every week...whoever had the best costume got $10 and the chance to be the next week's DJ in charge of the cleaning music.
It was hilarious! One week we had Cleopatra and her cat, a mummy, and my youngest with hand drawn scorpion tattoos and a sword, there were farmers and cowboys, the next week they were all zombies, then there was the week they discovered Nirvana and dressed in flannels...
Saturday mornings were always filled with laughter and learning as we cleaned. It was a great way to introduce them to different genres of music, and different ways of life.

The song “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles is a metaphor for the awkward way people move when they try to keep their balance in choppy water, which is reminiscent of the way people are depicted in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. That is what the writer of the song was inspired by, but if you look at it as a metaphor for life it could also mean trying to stay afloat when life tries to drown you. You go about your day by day like everyone else just trying to survive. Just because a song has an upbeat sound doesn't always mean it is a happy song, in my opinion.

I seem to recall this was on the heels of the US tour of the King Tut mummy and relics. Everyone was an amateur Egyptologist. Meanwhile Steve Martins song came out during the 70's during a massive tour of and the excitement of the King Tut's treasures. exhibit.

Hahaha this song was huge and yes we all did the dance . Nobody would have been thrown out of the club back in the day. It wasn't cringe in the 80s lol. 😂 Great reaction ❤

Such a fun song to dance to. Their song “Manic Monday” (I believe that’s the correct song) was written by Prince.

Something that almost tore the band apart for this song is that all 4 women do lead vocals but this song only had room for 3 and they made the ladies audition to see who would get the lead vocal spots in the song

The Bangles first album, "All Over the Place", released in 1984, had a '60s sound with lots of clever, well-constructed songs including "Going Down To Liverpool". It did well and earned them a spot opening for Cyndi Lauper's "Fun Tour" in 1983-84.
The Bangles second album, Different Light, was their breakthrough. First came "Manic Monday," written by high-profile Bangles fan Prince. Then "If She Knew What She Wants," written by Jules Shear. But then came "Walk Like An Egyptian," the goofy romp that the band didn't think would get released as a single because it was "too weird." Of course, it shot to number 1 and became a sensation, but the group's rock pedigree did take a hit....
Other great Bangles singles for your consideration include "Walking Down The Street" and my personal favorite, especially being an adolescent in 1988, "In Your Room." The Bangles also did a great cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter", which did much better in the charts than the original.

Bro, as others have said, it's not a dance. Nobody in the '80s that I know ever did such a dance, and I went to plenty of school dances back in the day. It was just a goofy silly thing, like maybe something that the class clowns might do, or people goofing around might've done when the song played on the radio.

You need to do a video on "All For Love" by Bryan Adams, Sting, and Rod Stewart. It is an awesome love song written for Disney's "The Three Musketeers" back in the 90's, which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, and Oliver Platt. This song is beyond fantastic!

“Hazy Shade of Winter”, their remake of a Simon & Garfunkel song, is a banger. This one is cringey 80s cheese.

Suzanna Hoffs kept Prince in a very tight friend zone. He went to a lot of the Bangles show just to see those rolling eyes and often he jumped on stage to play his incredible solos. He wrote and gifted the girls a song "Manic Monday" who reached number two on the Billboard chart. Ironically Prince took away the first place with his hit "Kiss".

Every one of my guy friends, and not a few of my female ones, fell in love with Susannah Hoffs, after this video. She sang the third verse, and did that sexy eyes thing. Myself, I was massively into the basd player, Mikki Steele. She sang the second verse.
