  • In this video, I explore the concept of charm in the gemstone design as I cut an historically accurate old mine cut from a 3d scan. The design was cut in a piece of color change zandrite.
Thanks to JTV and ‪@gems‬ for providing the rough material.

Great cut friend...I can say it was antique cuts that gave the confidence to start cutting first by hand and the by rudimentary means to then building my own desk and hand piece. By starting imperfect and striving to understand what was causing the imperfections, it trained my brain, hand and eyes to correct them. I have learned a great deal from you and appreciate all the time and energy you have put forth in teaching, preserving and discussing the past of this shared craft. Thank you.

@@rfn74 thank you. I’m going the opposite direction I guess and retraining myself to see the beauty of imperfection.

Thanks for this. I get it!! None of my stones are perfect. Lol. I find, imperfect stones, with slight flaws even within the stone itself are the most beautiful. A little silk or Schiller adds to the truth of the stone.

I have been looking for some old books with designs for cutting old types of diamonds for a while now. I love the old diamond designs applied to colored gems❤

what was that material? that slab you cut it from?........... it looks like the slab of citrine quartz I have, which was grown but has a somewhat visible "seed" crystal running through it, so when cutting a stone from it, I usually line it up so the seed line runs right across the diameter.

Can this be done with agates? I literally have a few hundred really nice agates and they are super clear or with bands and they glow bright. I can't see how they wouldn't pop and shine or why it wouldn't work, but I can't find any videos and the local rock show Handley's doesn't really see it done. Outside of all the agates, I don't know what everything is that I have but it all pops. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! The gem the guy created for the French masterpiece that won him the award was a pleasure to watch.

@@aaronbaca yes you can facet anything. If the stone isn’t transparent, it doesn’t really get the benefit of the facets on the back from if the stone is transparent it will work well and if it’s milky or translucent it with still get some decent shine. Give it a try!

@@JustinKPrim Thank you so much for the reply. I have plenty that are as clear as glass, and when they are wet or with a flashlight on them, they glow bright like a bulb. I know once cut and polished they should do the trick. I just didn't know if it was possible. I will have to see if I can find anything in your videos that is like what I have. I try to collect every day and usually find at least 5 or so that are all the way clear. You will hear from me again I promise. I didn't want to purchase a machine until I had an answer. Awesome, you are great and I enjoy the live videos as well and so did my family who are not into rocks like me. 👏👏👏

@@Michael-fs7su if you’re going to the Bangkok, the Jewelry Trade Centre (J.T.C.) is what you’re looking for. Four floors of open gem mall, and they’ve got every kind of stone you want. Not much good rough, but definitely lots of cut stones that need re-cut.

@JustinKPrim thanks for the reply mate. I just love those grey/silvery and charcoal spinels. Sure the blues are special but those greys are hot. Besides, I've got over a thousand self fossicked Australian sapphires so blue gets a little boring. What have you been hunting lately? Cheers
