Derek Andrews Wait! Didn’t the contractor say it was a problem?? I heard him say it’s a problem “now” when Trent suggested it could be an issue in a few years. I got the sense that he planned on rectifying the problem. All of this is on video. That contractor is a good guy from what I can see and YT will keep him honest along with working with good ppl like Trent and Allie.

The fact that your contractor is doing all of that important work for you is exactly why you need to have it all done the way it is supposed to be done! If they know you're expecting the first part to be done correctly the better your chances it will all be done correctly. You are both so tactful and personable I'm sure it'll go smoothly for you.

If the contractor gets upset because you ask him to correct mistakes he made, he is the one to deal with his emotions. You’re paying him to do a professional job. He needs to step up. I hope you had him remove the tank, lay gravel and level it. Quick patch fixes now are going to be expensive down the road. 😕

PattyBlueHayes Absolutely, must fix it right, not some Jerry rig. I can’t see how that passed inspection. I started wondering about them both when they ran into all that water in your basement. Around here aspen grow where there is water close to the surface (not in Utah). Ask your neighbors about water table and vernal springs; also ask them about the gravel code. That is questionable, especially when a septic system that is ‘crap’ passes code!?!?

Proper placement should be the only solution that you as the customer insist on.

Good to know we aren’t the only ones dealing with these same issues at the moment.

When I was taking it 25 miles to the new owner my friend and I looked under the hood. Wire and wire coverings eaten! My friends husband fixed it this time and yes.....we did tell the new buyers. We all laughed a lot because they had inspected under the hood the day before I went to deliver the car. Hungry little devils, yes?

Working for a large aerospace company in Fort Worth, we had problems with pigeons in the over head. The company installed noise makers that had solenoids to strike the structure at random times and scare off the birds. The birds got used to the noise and covered them with crap anyway. Poison and traps are my go to solution.

Let me help you guys understand something a little bit more before you judge this contractor to harsh. A INSPECTOR passed that job. That back fill MAYBE pretty minor, and to not justify dumping and moving that tank. I thought moving the outlet hole was a great compromise, and it makes sense, but just make sure the hole you patch is done right. That’s more important to me. I would have them ask the INSPECTOR, because that’s what all the insurance companies are going to do. Him and his contractor don’t have to argue, the inspector can decide what has to happen. Nothing wrong with being more safe then sorry, but now if something does go wrong, and this is done AFTER the inspection, that’s going to cause ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS if something DOES have to be fixed in the future. And Trent and Allie, you will be stuck with whatever cost that will be, at first, and even maybe completely. So I would ask the inspector what to do honestly, but BEFORE you touch anything, because he already passed it.

I agree that it’s important to fix it now; but I am confused at your assumption the inspector is responsible for anything he approves that fails. Good luck getting a county or jurisdiction to pay for fixing their mistakes!

Mice hate peppermint!!! So I got peppermint oil & soaked cottonballs (let dry a bit) then I put about 10 of them all over the trailer. Wahhla problem fixed. Hope this helps. P.S. watch out for black ant issues 15 peppermint drops & 3 drops of dawn soap, mixed w/spray bottle of water kills them instantly. Careful that peppermint also attracts bears. 😱 Had an aromatherapy teacher use peppermint spray to freshen her vehicle. One day found evidence of the bear in the car. Ripped through door took bites out of the upholstery, but attacked everything that normally had been sprayed with peppermint. Moth balls and dryer sheets really work well. I do love more natural ways, but sometimes it's just better to take the other method. You could also use pantyhose over the vents to filter out smaller bugs. Good luck!

I just built an offgrid cabin in a remote area. No insulation or wiring but they still come to take a look. They made a nest in my cotton mattress and it's now on the compost heap. I was eating a late night snack in bed (low futon), looked over to see a mouse just about to reach out and take a bite....no fear. They rarely see humans...quite cute actually. I've since learnt that mice host a larval stage of ticks in their intestines. Since there are incidences of Lyme's disease in the area...all that cuteness has to go. I won't use poison, but I've head that growing mint around the house might help....and no food in the cabin. Good luck...if anyone knows a humane effective solution I'd love to hear it.

I'm so glad y'all talked to him and he's going to fix the issue with the septic tank because the truth is once it's buried and used for a while and the issues start with it backing up, and it would, then it's a massive problem! You either have to pump the tank and dig it back up to reset it or most of the time they just pump them and cave them in and put a new tank next to it.
I also understand the reasoning of not wanting to make the contractor mad, but that's the one good thing about everything having to be inspected, the inspector is to make sure the contractor does the jobs correctly, but I do not understand why the inspector would pass that septic system if the tank was 3 inches low on the intake side. That makes me think that the contractor and inspector have become friends over the years so the inspector allows certain things to slide, and that can be messed up, but it does happen more than people think and especially in smaller towns. The inspector works for you, so when they do become good friends with contractors and pass certain things that shouldn't have been passed, then they're not working for you. If my rambling makes any sense. lol. My brother owns a construction company, and a big septic company, he's done septic work for 23 years, and he would never allow a tank to be set 3 inches low on the intake side. If he caught his employees trying to get an unlevel tank to pass, he would most likely get new employees. lol. Septic systems are very expensive, and when they are installed correctly they will last forever. But when they are not, they may not last 5 years.

That's a no-go for me..regardless if we chit chat n have a decent working relationship, you're here to do a job and you're here to do it 100% correct without cutting corners. Just because we're "cool" with each other does not mean you get to do a half ass job. You won't be in my life 5 years from now when I'm having plumbing issues on my property, so fix it now & fix it right.

We had a trailer on our property we would visit on weekends. The mice literally took over one winter. There was poop and pee everywhere. Blinds, couch, drawers, bed...everywhere! We did everything inside and out to prevent them from invading our RV. I have a very sensitive nose and I could still smell their urine after cleaning from top to bottom every weekend. I especially smelled it around the tub area. I would remove the access panel and see nothing. One weekend I declared removal of the tub. Sure enough in the far corner they had built a nest. In a full cover suit and mask we cleaned, cleaned and cleaned again. We won our RV back from the mice but not from the smell. We brought it back home and stored it for a few months before selling it. We told the new owners the whole story but they said they didn’t smell anything. 🤷🏼‍♀️. We bought a van after that experience.
When it comes to your septic tank. Have it done right. That’s what you paid for. Your contractor and crew will respect your decision and will know in the future what is expected.

My brother wanted to be able to rent out his cabin in Running Springs, California on airbnb. In order to do so he had to get a permit through the county. His cabin was surrounded by pine trees, but the one thing that he had to do in order to rent through airbnb was remove all of the pine needles from the ground!!!!!!!!!!!! YES, THEY REALLY DID REQUIRE THAT. My brother ended up using a go between in order to rent his cabin out on airbnb. I still shake my head each time I think about the requirement!!

We built a home a few years ago and found ourselves in a similar situation. The builder was great and were very good at not only building homes but had great customer service. We did however walk a thin line and tried to save those "silver bullets" for the big stuff that we knew might be a bit of tense negotiation to work out. In the end, we had a beautiful home built where everything functions extremely well and we couldn't be happier. The goodwill we bought paid dividends as the house went through it's first seasons, especially freeze and thaw. As warranty items popped up, they went above and beyond for us because we had such a good working relationship during the build process. I saw a lot of great quotes by others on this video... one of my favorites is, "You get more bees with honey than vinegar!" It's served me well.

I’m like you Allie, I’m terrified of mice. I remember several years ago we found droppings. I wanted to move out and go back to my mums, lol. Our house was a new build and we were told by the builders to expect them, because it was a field before a housing estate. So, I told my husband to get rid of them. My husband, who hates cruelty to animals, said he would catch them using cruelty free traps. One morning he said, we’ve caught some, I’ll take them over to the field and release them. I screamed hell no, they might find their way back to our house. So, He went off to work with the mice in a box and an hour later he rang me and said ‘I’ve freed Mickey and Minnie’. I said where? He laughed and told me he had driven 30 miles away, found a field there and let them out, lol. What a man will do for his woman. Love eh? ❤️❤️👍🏻 I love seeing that Trent is doing that for you too. X

Y'all are living my dreams. I always hoped one day when our kids are grown, we'd buy an RV and travel. Then when we'd seen North America and found the place we want to live, we'd buy a big chunk of land, live in our RV and build our dream home ourselves. Unfortunately my hubs has some health issues, so it won't happen quite as planned. But we are making plays to travel full time in a few years. Our first step was last weekend when we bought our diesel truck. Next year a small RV to start and then in a few years, a full time RV. Who knows, maybe one day we'll build our dream home but as of now, I'm excited about our next few steps!!!

I have never seen excavation take so long and you are only doing a tiny house with a basement! You need to find some good knowledgeable local people to talk to and ask. Reputations, both good and bad, proceed people. Ask around. Even if you have to pay for advice, it can give you peace of mind everything is on up and up or no, find a new contractor and his buddy the excavator. Just make sure the folks you are talking with are not their friends.

I have been an amputee for 35 years and my friends have always acted like I was crazy to not speak up when things are not working right/safely with my prosthesis. Yes, I am scared because I literally cannot walk without a good prosthetic tech. It has been a VERY stressful dynamic and I have learned that I have to speak up because 90% of the time they will honor their work. The 10% where they did not resulted in my going to another practitioner. But the repercussions of not saying anything are too big not to speak up. You’re absolutely correct about putting screens in the vent area but put the screens on the backside of the vents. Also the most places they come in are the plumbing access areas and the electricity access areas. If you’re using steel wool don’t use it anywhere near there is a fire source or an excessive heat source because steel wool can spontaneously go to fire with the right conditions. When I sealed my RV up I use find screening, spray foam, steel wool. Since I’m in a motorhome there’s a lot of area electrical and plumbing that’s all but impossible to seal because if they can get their head through they can get their body through but they cannot get inside the coach now because of what I’ve done they can get in the storage bay but no further.
