Around the time this game came out I was 8 or 9 years old. My dad bought it for me and we managed to get it to run on his old PC. I can say with confidence I had absolutely no clue what I was doing in the slightest, but I loved the game so much anyway. I would chase down convoys from the surface and fire at them with free hand torpedoes, praying that one would hit while I tried shooting ships with my guns until I ran out of ammunition and inevitably sunk. Sometimes I would try plan something out but because I had no clue how to properly launch an assault I would fail every time. Yet I still loved the game so much. Sometimes I'd surface and stand on top of my U-boat as captain, staring out into the ocean and simply enjoying the virtual view. This video reminded me of those days 7 or 8 years ago, in a way that was made perfectly. You built up so much suspense while I prayed your torpedos would hit, just like I did many years ago. Excellent video, thank you for sharing.

Excellent tutorial and I had to keep reminding myself that this was “just a game”! The main reason for that is that my father served in the Royal Navy on a destroyer protecting the North Atlantic convoys and was actually torpedoed twice within 24 hrs. He lost a lot of good friends and it used to upset him to talk about it. (Which was very very rarely) He was also at Normandy and after the war served in India. I couldn’t watch or play this without thinking of him. I lost him 13 years ago at 80. My hero.

I spent many hours playing Silent Service on my Commodore 64 as well, running around the South Pacific terrorizing convoys. My father was a Submariner, albeit much later than WW2, and on a boomer instead of an attack sub. He still had input for me playing the game, as I was a young child and didn't understand some concepts at first such as leading targets and some other aspects of submarines.

Very nice Videos. I like your calm tone and the spontaneous dramaturgy. That's imho how one has to approach games like that. To viewers of somebody playing this it seems hilarious, to the players it's a revelation in gaming. It's all about headtrips. As a german, the scenario is somewhat confusing and frightening, especially with all the mods and darn swastikas, but this early scenery and aspects of submarinery with it's fast development and technological boundaries on the brink to microtechnology and digitalisation are a perfect fit for thrilling gaming. Have a nice Xmas.

This is a Task Force, front line high-value naval units screened by destroyers and light units.
A convoy is a group of merchant ships (cargo ships, bulk-carriers, tankers) usually protected by frigates, corvettes, sloops and other lighter, slower naval vessels where endurance
    is more important than speed.

Nicely done - this game seems to have done a good job of balancing realism with the reality of a functional crew of one. It does require mastery of the basic concepts, and you have done a good job with that. Another commenter mentioned realism levels:
    1. Radar - if this is early war the Brits probably would not have had it.
    2. Asdic - they should, however, have had the active (pinging) sonar. Although it was limited in range.
    3. On the surface in daylight - that is a bit troubling. The Mark 1, Mod 0 eyeball was fully functional. A periscope might escape detection, but a conning tower? (To be sure, the light was not perfect.)

You should either use some kind of sound-softening filter in front of your mic, or remove the plosives in post-processing/editing. There's even preset filter for this very purpose in Sound Forge.

The best WW2 sub sim has yet to be written. Ubisoft had a good crack at it with their Silent Hunter series but made some embarrassing and somewhat foolish errors. Having a sub commander have to come back from a mission where the chances of survival were slight only to have to buy his own torpedoes and sub updates was a hilarious and stupid addition. It was board game thinking not computer game thinking. Tying overly frequent and often pointless radio messages to the increase time control made playing the game a needless exercise in frustration and, like the lazy watch commander in SH3, was a bug or error never addressed. Then there was the stupid crew fatigue crap that was tied, again, to the increased time control. This was a pathetic attempt to add realism that failed completely.
These errors made Ubisoft look cynically lazy and disinterested in their customer base. Storms that never ended. Fogs that never lifted. The lack of thermal layers to dive beneath and escape detection. A sea with zero wild life in it except the occasional whale modders put in and a totally flat sea bed with no canyons to hide in that often made escape impossible increased frustration as the players own natural cunning was factored out of the game.
With all its faults, version three still remains the best version. Ubisoft tried to make the graphics the focus but missed understanding that game atmosphere was the vital component in a cat and mouse game taking place in a claustrophobic steel tube. The series died because you needed a super computer to run the damn game in the end and when you did run it the bugs were just as annoying as ever. Basically, Ubisoft sold you a box of bugs in pretty wrapping paper. That was not professional or respectful.
On the plus side, the atmosphere in the game that really did work, was created by the tention of the hunt and escape.
So, what would I like to see in a new Sub Sim series dealing with this fancinating era?
    1. A genuine wolf pack where I, as a Sub commander, could meet with and see other subs as we arranged to attack the convoys.
    2. Better input from High command. Perhaps some strategic options for the player?
    3. Each new addition to the series could concentrate on a different section of the submarine war. German in the North Atlantic and Med. British and American subs in the pacific and against German and Italian units in the Med. Japanese subs in the Pacific regions. This would give players a feel for how each navy conducted its submarine warfare and the equipment used by them. Maybe even the addition of the mini-subs and their activities?
    4. Less sudden deaths of the subs. Unless crushed by pressure there is no need to just end each failing mission with a sudden message saying you died. Game tension could be racked up considerably by giving the player a chance, however slim, of repairing a damaged craft. This was one of the things Ubisoft did well but which could be improved greatly. HOW the vessel dies is where great improvements to atmosphere and playability can come into play. A skipper that could load a tube with oil and another with clothing, paperwork and so one might just be able to convince an attacking vessel that he was dead. Sometimes it could work, sometimes not. Diving into a canyon and remaining silent on the bottom could protect a sub from depth charges. On the other hand, running into a canyon wall could also sink it.
    5. Sudden attacks from aircraft diving, at night, from a height in a glide with engines cut, only to light you up with a spotlight and bomb the crap out of you would make for thrilling moments.
    6. A thermal layer to hide under now and then would be good too. A little good luck for a hard pressed skipper would be welcome.
    7. More imaginative ship deaths. A ship breaking in half and looking like the hull was severed with a sharp knife is just cheap crap and lazy programming. Modders did wonders with the way ships died but they should not have had too. They were thinking about things the way Ubisoft should have been thinking about them.
    8. A surface and surrender option.
    9. Give the boats being attacked some humanity. Let's see the crews escaping the sinking vessels. Floundering in oil burning seas. Lets us remember that war is about people dying and not just ships sinking. War is not fun. We should be reminded of that.
The genre is wide open for intelligent software companies to invest and create hugely popular Sub Sim games set during the great world wide conflict of WW2. From the Arctic ocean to the Pacific and through each of the sea going nations contributions to the submarine war.
It is quite staggering that the only thing that killed off Silent Hunter 3 in the end was that Windows operating systems could no longer cope with running it correctly and even that was only because of a single .dll file in SH3 that constantly crashes under windows 10. If not for that it would still be being played around the world on modern computers, such is its popularity. That is also a measure of how close Ubisoft game to getting it right.

Wow, that is some list. You've obviously got more game time in than me. Excellent list of enhancements. For my view, I like that palette of game control options SH5 provides. Allows me "as a video maker" to tell a visual story without getting too techie. Better 3D graphics is assumed in a newer game and I certainly like "free roam" around the boat. Speaking of story telling, and tying in with your idea, it would be fun to play a Station, like Torpedo Mate, XO, dive planesman. Probably asking too much but these ideas came to mind.

This is a really nice example of a Silent Hunter convoy attack by the way. I tend to allow myself the pleasure of external camera even though the suspense of not having it gives a different kind of experience. I usually remove the visual marker where my sub is though.

The horror of seeing and hearing a ship dying...its agony, its might turned into nothing but metal sinking to the ground in minutes, the bow sticking out of the water as a memorial of man's both ingenious and destructive mind, finally giving in and covered by the endless tears of the sea. Touching and yet we have to sink these ships. Well done.

I'm disappointed UbiSoft hasn't improved these games. There was so much potential.
A couple things this "old salt" noticed. First, the clouds are moving one direction, but the smoke is moving in a drastically different direction? Bah! Next, I guarantee that the destroyers and other ships (not "boats"!) would be pinging with active sonar, not listening passively. They should have been all over you in short order.
One the other hand, I'd admire your game play, narration and explanation! Well done!

Also one would never keep periscope up during an attack. It would be too dangerous and risking detection. What one would do is to lift the periscope and take the readings and lowering immediately. Doing this for every reading would greatly reduce the risk of detection. The game is either very unrealistic or you are playing on easy level settings. The freighter was only a few cables away and should easily have detected the scope as it was on full elevation during daytime.

I just stumbled on this video Don and had to write a comment on it (I dont normally on most You Tube Videos). First off the only word I can think of is Magnificent!!!!.
I have played Silent Hunter in its many versions and guises since I purchased my first version of SH3 and have ntal block over this thing called "Angle on the Bow" and setting the TDC up correctly. There have been various videos that have been released, but I have got to say watching this one has blown away has got to be the most comprehensible whilst being presented in such a logical straightforward manner.
You have prompted me now to reload SH5 and apply your guidance, so much was I inspired. The only thing I regret is not coming across this video earlier!!!!.

Well I loaded the game up and started with a historical mission. A question if you could possibly answer it.
When I click on the ship I find that the info re speed and course, etc is in the bottom right in a solid box. Yours is in the top left in semi transparent print. Have you got any mods added to your game or is it vanilla?

    • @dondec
      @dondec  6 ปีที่แล้ว

F1 shows a list of KB commands. ESC will pause and bring up menu. The mods I use are listed in the video description. Scroll down. I got them from SUBSIM.com in what was then called the Sober's MegaMod pak. Sorry I can't be of more help with modding, but all the advice is on SUBSIM. The articles there got me going. The RULER I got in one of the mods looks like a 360 degree compass, I think that's what you want.

One funny technique I use in this game is to get so close alongside a ship below water that it's guns can't depress to hit me-then suddendly surface and dive which results in the entire convoy opening fire which by then I'm back below water and the ship next to me gets blown apart by gunfire. I know it's absurd but it works-I had a carrier blown out of the water this way by about 7 destroyers.

The last Silent Hunter game I played was 2 I think. There was an option to only have the visibility options that the actual crews would have, meaning there were no 'exterior' views or other aids to help you see exactly where your targets, or enemies were. There was also a section in the back of the manual (remember those) that suggested if you wanted to simulate a 'real' patrol and have the same odds of finding a convoy, you should get a deck of cards and draw one every time the game said you'd encountered something. If you drew anything other than a picture card, you were to ignore that encounter as a false contact.

Excellent video! Love watching those ships sink...though, even if it isn't modeled, I think of the people that are losing their lives on that ship as it goes down. Like, one minute they're there and the next...gone. Like they were never there. Seems so trivial. Really messes with your morality. Like those ships are the enemy but they're still...humans. People. With families and history and lives back home. I couldn't even imagine how the real sub captains dealt with the guilt, if they did.

Going up against you would be like facing Leutnant zur See Otto Kretschmer. Very methodical.

Thanks, that's quite a compliment. As a video maker I love telling a good visual story, and this game can do that well. I posted a few other SH5 videos here on TH-cam. Thanks again.

Part of me wishes I would have done this IRL. I work on the Border atm, but I could get into this.

Hehe... Karl, I had 2 Amigas. Even started selling my own Amiga software. Couldn't believe they just closed up shop, no warning. Wow.
