I am 67 and play Video games for almost 40 years NES SNES N64 GameCube PLAYSTATION 12345 Elden Ring Dark Souls 123 Demon’s Souls Bloodborne Sekiro I adore video games !
Same here, I’ve been playing for 35+ years and actually had my start on Atari 2600. My parents purchased a NES and I opened it on Christmas Day along with Mike Tyson Punch out, Zelda and Mario Brothers. I’ve been hooked ever since. It was the best Christmas ever.
My father used to say video games are for children, then i forced him to play "Rome total war 1" in 2012 and he's still playing the same game 2-3 hours a day in 2024 because it helps him relax and minimize his stress. Also for me playing games like Rome total war made me want to learn about history and i ended up getting very high grades in school when it came to history class
Games are for adults too. I enjoy architecture so play any game where I can build things, even minecraft. I also like the odd platform games for the challenge. I find adults who had games as children are more likely to appreciate them as adults yet my parents generation who were lucky just to play ping pong in an arcade are just not that into gaming. My grandmother would have thought the computer was a evil demon and shot it
It should be a second national anthem for the USA, maybe the armed forces anthem. That would be such a meme made true. I’m really joking but it would make me chuckle if it happened.
Another great video Clayton. I'm 49 and I'm still an avid gamer. I was diagnosed with Younger Onset Parkinson's 20 years ago and I credit video games for helping me fight it all of these years. Also, pinball helps as well! God bless to you and your family!
45 here. Was in war in 90's and video games saved my sanity and thus probably my life. Still avid gamer and don't intend to stop till I expire. I owe games everything.
What Elon says is 100% true. When you concentrate fully during an online PvP or PvE game, especially at the highest difficulty levels, there's no room left for any other thoughts. If you get distracted, you’ll lose. Personally, I use games to calm myself down and as a distraction from anger, frustration, sadness, and other emotions. It’s like an escape, at least temporarily. After I’m done and return to the real world, I'm in a calmer state, which helps me see things more clearly. As a result, the decisions I make afterward are more sound.
I am a 58 yo Hispano French woman and I started playing D&D in my youth. Then I had a computer and a PS and loved gaming. As I moved to the UK ( with my British husband) and got on with long hours career and life, I stopped gaming. I got back to gaming years ago, first on iPad ( loved the spiderweb RPGs with no inApp purchase!) then my husband got me an Xbox. Now I have my game room! Video games are for every one. I spend too much time on ESO, Skyrim, etc… so many games to discover that I missed while working. Lots of catch up to do. There is no age for gaming. It is pure pleasure, frustration, discovery, thinking, dying ( I am good at dying! ) etc… love it. Sure I would also love to have a table top gang to play with ( as in my youth playing D&D) but hard to find so I settle with just online and solo games.
I remember being discriminated against in job interviews because I said I played video games. I didn't even bring it up, they asked me, I said yes innocently not knowing any better. Interviewer treated me like a child afterwards and rudely rejected me at the end.
im a heavy JRPG player since childhood beginning in late 80s. the jrpgs thought me many things like resource management, cash management, what to prioritize, long term planning, the importance of leveling up, patience, and organization. not only does jrpgs help me learn important life skills, it's also VERY RELAXING!!!
I had no idea you even had a gaming channel LMFAO I was like "woah holy crap really?" when I saw the channel profile pic I laughed because of how awesome and funny the pic is! But anyways I really like that you have this channel, it's awesome. Kind of crazy it exists but yeah, really cool stuff.
Video games helped me read (FF7) and then all these years later the same game helped my daughter read. Shes now learning about actions and consequences like what happens if she shoots at a stranger in GTA online Racing games helped with lefts and rights, tactic games helped with planning ahead, even rocket league helped with momentum and trajectory (she does insane jump boost hits). So many games can teach so many things that translate to real life Just recently got Empire of the Ants... An ant drowning lead to her researching ants, she thought they could swim. She showed me that Fire Ants make boats by connecting together, Field Ants walk on water and a species of ant can survive for 48 hours under water
Man, I’ve been saying video games helps in your cognition for years as me playing video games since I was 5 yrs old has made me a damn good professional driver!!
Another great upload. Love your channel Clayton keep up the great content! btw...........Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition for switch baby!! Im sure you have heard but just in case you didnt ;)
Having all the xenoblade games on switch has already made it one of the best and varied libraries for a game system, there's almost everything for everypne
That was a great interview. The stats on surgeons was surprising, but something gamers have known for a while. Goes same for woodworking, painting, drawing....any hobby that exercises manual dexterity and concentration really.
You should watch a documentary called "The Remarkable Life Of Ibelin". A story about a young gamer born with a degenrative muscular disease and how online gaming helped him. A very moving story made in a way that has never been done before.
As a 55 year old gamer, to me gaming is the best thing in life, always was, always will be... My gamer friends think the same, nothing beats coming home after a hard days work, take a shower, dinner and sit down to play a game before bed. Divorced, no children, no debt, got my place to live, food in the fridge, no stress/drama at home. Had I known then what I know now, I would have not married at all, because being single is the best thing for a man, no matter what others say otherwise. Without games, my life would be very sad IMO.
I treat games like learning a skill. The more information you have to assimilate and master, the better. It’s helped me learn fast reaction, decision making through simulations like CoD, and even meditate on things like personal finances by playing strategy games where you manage an economy. It’s also the only way I can get myself to sit down and listen to podcasts like Joe Rogan. Yet it’s not kosher in society. Shame.
In the 90s when gaming was growing further beyond “it’s just a fad”, the news would follow stories about gaming being a benefit or distraction for gamers. Both kids and parents discussed the hand eye coordination and memory recall benefits of gaming. In addition to the story telling and creativity that helped with growing imagination. It’s interesting that people now are acting like this is just now being discovered as benefits we never realized were there all along. It’s good, it’s just not new.
There's already been research on this for quite a while proving that playing videogames help with all kinds of cognitive development and hand-eye-coordination. I thought you knew already though. Back when I was studying psychology there was very limited research on it. Had I actually finished it, I likely would've done all kinds of research related to this. Most people thought it was ridiculous when I mentioned that I thought videogames would be a great help against preventing or slowing down dementia and other types of diseases like that, but by now it's basically a well-established fact. But of course, the types of games you play do matter. And it's those games filled to the brim with scummy tactics that encourage addiction that aren't actually all that fun and/or challenging that don't provide any benefits.
Our current cultural climate doesn't appreciate education and brain-stimulating activities as it should. Hopefully, this will change as more people get into gaming and share the benefits of this wonderfully diverse medium.
Joe literally said in this interview that games are a time sink. so he really didn't change his opinion. you just gotta improve your listening skills. Joe agreeing with Elon that games are good for your hand eye coordination & can be beneficial if you're a surgeon, does not negate the fact that they are a time sink & can unbalance your life if you do it too much, like he did when he was addicted to Quake.
I play civ 5 twice a week with my dad. It never gets old and we are constantly trying out new strategies. Its such a great way to bond with ppl who arent big on talking.
This is so true, I started playing Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast again and it’s been great to grind for a few hours before bed to wind down,, It’s so relaxing to play now that I’m leveled up.
62 years old 42 years gaming. Still winning at Call Of Duty 24/7 maps. So to mention riding my cafe racer motorbike daily & gaming keeps me sharp. For the youth, better of at home network gaming socialising than on the streets socialising experimenting with drugs.
64 years old here. Gaming opens up so many experiences for me. Been Gaming since pong... came such a long way. VR has added so much more. Will game til I'm dead.
I had to show that part to my wife. We constantly go back and forth on the usefulness of gaming. At 45 and a lifelong gamer I think its a great hobby. However I hunt, backpack, do BJJ, journal, read etc. He has;t found anything else he likes as much as gaming. I want him to have at least one other thing that is physically active and that has been a struggle for us. Love the channel. God Bless. FYI PS5 Pro is delayed a day from UPS so I am a little crushed over that this morning.
Absolutely true and the 'media' say it's the opposite. Hand / eye co-ordination is really good for you. Be it Games / tennis / baseball etc. It's the most effective skill. I don't play much games, but, I am a fine artist and the motor skills involved are definitely an up-lift to mental health
Hey Clayton, love Redacted but I just found out today you have this video game channel! You are even cooler now. Glad you can have an outlet from the stress of news and politics, I also do a news channel and know how much it can beat you down. Going to go through and watch your whole library now. Party on.
Clayton love your channel and also Redacted. Having a games channel for the older generation is great, helps to keep the gamer in me alive! What's your opinion on kids playing? My boys have Nintendo Switch and are very smart, haven't seen any issues 😊
@@stefanochiriaco6175 I did a whole video on this exact subject. I think it’s called. What playing video games does to your brain. I think playing switch games is perfect for kids.
Thank you for that, I just discovered your gaming channel recently. Thank you for your independent media service you guys are great, congrats to USA with Trump Win from the UK, l feel a wind of change coming for the world @@ClaytonMorris
I had a brainstem stroke 3 years ago, and am doing a extensive program to deal with the brain damage that I now have. They told me that playing video games, but also board games are very good for the brain, especially if you have brain damage. I no longer feel bad when I play games. It's therapy! 😅
have been following redacted for years now for the "real" news and liked how they weren't scared to talk about ufo's and and this just came up in my feed. had no clue clayton was into gaming too, love it.
I used to play Starcraft 2 a lot back in the day, and there was a mod game in the arcade section called Star Battle. It was pretty sick, but to my point, there were a couple guys I would always play with that were going to med school. They were both pretty good from what I recall, so I'm sure they got through the grueling med school system and are now both top tier gynecologists. We do need more RTS games though. I miss the good old days of Command and Conquer : Generals. You know a game is awesome when China bans it.
Video games have always been a hobby, but gaming has become an escape from the real world as well. They are definitely right, gaming calms me down when it's been a crap day.
This reminds me of the concept of focused vs diffused thinking. Sometimes to tackle a problem you need to let your brain process information in the background rather than trying to solve it through brute force.
Just as powerful as any media leveraging a metaphor to represent and discuss contentious topics. Best example would be Final Fantasy XIV (video game) and Dune (book). Latter, together with Celia S. Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy and Robert Silverberg's Majipoor Chronicles inspiring Warhammer 40k franchise.
Playing Music Rhythm Games helped me "re-map" my motor functions mentally when I lost control of my limbs after my nerve cells were damaged from GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome). I still couldn't restore full functionality on my right hand and leg but at least I can still move them. I now stick with playing turn based RPG games. Playing fighting and racing games is still a challenge for my right hand. My right fingers hurt every time after I play them for even an hour.
That Joe and Elon podcast was mesmerizing and haunting for so many reasons. Incredible week and I was shocked to hear how insanely good Elon is as Diablo IV! Love the show man!
Video games are under very hard DEI pressure - in fact it is impossible to do big games atm without bending the knee to the woke agenda from a finance and review side (90%) of games media is owned by the left. So the format is dying.
I have been playing video games since I was in elementary school, and it was my inspiration for becoming an IT professional, first in the Navy, then in the private sector and currently in the federal sector. I don't think it is common to find anybody in the IT field who doesn't play video games in some way, shape, or form. For context, I'm 43 years old, so saying video games are for kids is kind of foolish.
I mean, I love playing video games too. But I've been playing Wukong, took a lot of anger, frustration, annoyance, getting scared, the nervousness, heart beating real fast, all sorts of other emotions to finally platinum the game. So..... I don't know. lol. But still, my GOTY !!
I’m 68 an I play my Nintendo switch oied quite often including today on the train commuting from work. It helps with eye hand coordination, concentration and the satisfaction of completing a stage is a good feeling of accomplishment.
There are so many benefits. I'm convinced I would be nowhere near as successful without videogames in my life. One game in particular that I know helped me tremendously is EverQuest back in the day. My drive to play that game tought me to build a PC, learn to type (pretty damn essential), and once in the game be a valuable member of a guild etc. It was an amazing experience that sitting around watching tv and drinking would not give me.
I think is related to the feeling of being "In the zone". Anyone who ever played a sports or something they really like, you know what I'm talking about. It's hard to explain and it seems to happen randomly, you get into a state that YOU KNOW, you cannot fail at what you are doing. I really like to have more info about that phenomenon.
I play games, but only ones i enjoy. Unfortunately, the ones i enjoy are considered "slop" by other, more knowledgable gamers that apparently know what's best for me.
I haven't seen Rogan's newest Musk podcast yet, but will be sure to soon! When you have one of the worlds smartest men talking about how video games can benefit the mind that is a win for gamers who of course also live a healthy life style!
When I was fighting the final boss Murai in Ninja Gaiden Black after many many hours, I was in a trance like state and untouchable, I beat him easily and for one brief moment I felt like Neo in the Matrix... I played it for the first time in 15 years and I was terrible at the game. I don't have the time nor patience to get back to ninja master, but I recall the feeling was very memorable and exhilirating. true story.
Clayton says these things about games because he loves to play them. I do too. But the truth is that just because running from a lion makes you a better runner doesn't mean you should risk showing up in front of a lion if you know what I'm saying. Looking at the screen makes your eyes bad. And that is not a good trade. All the things games help you, you can get elsewhere without losing your eyesight.
VR Games build dexterity as well as good cardio. I am 50 and I hate the gym. But putting on some body weights and fighting 30 warriors to the death is really fun. Some folks like Otterworldy slams out songs on Beatsabre. Games are a challenge to the mind.
I've always supported the cognitive and hand eye coordination development and utilization involved with gaming, but more so now that I have personally experienced it. I've been playing games for over 30 years at this point, but in recent years, the benefit became more apparent. In 2022 I got nailed with a horrible case of Lyme disease that was essentially a shotgun blast to my nervous system, it caused serious brain fog, and Parkinson's like symptoms. Games, especially Diablo 2 and 3 can bring me out of the brain fog and restore cognitive function, and the use of the controller can ease the tremors and stave off some of the crippling fatigue from a damaged autonomic nervous system. My life and world have been completely destroyed; video games are they only thing really keeping me afloat right now.
I have an XBox Series X (I waited 10 hours overnight to get it on launch day 4 years ago)... But I get dizzy playing 3D games especially when rotating around a character. I want to get a KatVR or Omni One VR "treadmill" so I can control the place to look with my head and physically walk, run, duck, etc... I also might need glasses or contacts - I need to finally make an appointment next week... I prefer a game that teaches a skill like Rocksmith (guitar and bass guitar), MS Flight Simulator (piloting), or House Flipper (real estate).
If you play video games in an honest way comparable to how you would do things in the real world, then video games become a very powerful form of self-analysis.
I can personally vouch the power of video games has on me. It's helps be with my mood and depression. It's also helps me recharge and re focus on my work.
Not one gamer was surprised by this revelation.

Gaming is a double edged sword.
Like any other recreation, it can benefit & doom a person, all at the same time.
We did it Clayton! The greatest comeback in American history. I'm proud of my state Wisconsin.

Thank you for that, I just discovered your gaming channel recently. Thank you for your independent media service you guys are great, congrats to USA with Trump Win from the UK, l feel a wind of change coming for the world @@ClaytonMorris
I couldn't be anymore impressed by you Clayton. I had no idea you were a gamer.
Teach children to play Quake 1.
Portal 1 & 2, are both mind bending games.
Have always hoped for portal 3.
videogames are mental gyms
Didn't Joe dissed people playing video games a while ago?
Portal is a great game to teach physics.
This reminds me of the concept of focused vs diffused thinking. Sometimes to tackle a problem you need to let your brain process information in the background rather than trying to solve it through brute force.
This is why Skateboarding is so special.
The Dark Souls games and the community associated with them really helped me.
Clayton’s video game channel. Didn’t have that on my bingo card this week.
Deployed Worldwide Through My Deep Learning AI Research Library . Thank You. ❤
Access Flow States…. ❤
Quake LAN parties were my fave part of being a kid😎👍
Gaming is a universal language. I love gaming!
Been gaming since the NES launched as a squirt.
Videogames definitely help! Thanks to them I was able to learn English. I wanted to understand what the plot was also to figure out what to do.
Video games with a very high skill ceiling never hurt my brain. :)
I can definitely see the benefits of playing video games. The brain is a muscle. Playing games is simply exercising your brain.
Gamer since 1975!
*me punching my desk whenever i lose a gunfight in COD* ahh yes, video games lower stress and anxiety.... definitely ....
It explains why we are seeing current politics in our video games. We need to take politics out of video games so we can get the health benefits.
If you play video games in an honest way comparable to how you would do things in the real world, then video games become a very powerful form of self-analysis.
Make Video Games Great Again!
Clayton, your channel is the most amazing thing on TH-cam!
It's right up there with King Ass Ripper!
that clip of symphony being stretched to 6:9 from 4:3 gave me depression
I can personally vouch the power of video games has on me. It's helps be with my mood and depression. It's also helps me recharge and re focus on my work.
