    Also rub your finger inside radiator coolant reservoir and see if there is black carbon residue. This indicates a gasket leak that is contaminating the coolant fluid. Same goes for the oil, if its milky, it means there is a coolant leak mixing with oil.

    Ive had my 335I for 4 years, and somehow, even at 112k miles, my water pump is still going strong. You were correct about those vacuum lines, had one literally crack open and my car went into limp mode about 2 years ago, wasn't too bad to get it fixed. I've spent probably around 2700 dollars on maintenance (including rotors/brakes etc). Been a pretty solid, reliable car, though everything is stock which is why ive found it to be pretty reliable. Not bad for a 13 year old car. Most I spent on the car was the fuel pump and the pesky injectors. Also did the oil housing gasket, valve cover gasket probably up next, can definitely start to smell some burning oil but very tiny amounts of oil leak, if at all.

      Hitachi turbos in e90 generation are pretty durable, just don't "cook" them too much as with all the turbos. Vanos is a thing in any petrol bmw after 80's but they are only known to sometimes have issues on complex double vanos systems like M models. Guy is right it's always them pumps on n54 engines, but it's a beast, handles 600whp and even more on stock internals. I would buy it if there were no retarded regulations in my country for engines above 2l of displacement, and damn petrol price in Europe. Instead I bought e83 diesel. :|

    I am an old school mechanic, I purchased a 2007 BMW 335i twin turbo sedan. Gunmetal grey, with dark tinted windows, gotta say it is a eye catcher on the road. Over the years I add some modifications I new what the N54 engine can take in modifications and horse power. As of right now the outside looks like a nice luxury 4dr sedan. But under the hood that engine I modified is a beast. The engine puts out 800 horse power. It's funny when I am driving on the road and a Subaru, or mustange, or camaro, or dodge hellcat, or audi, or BMW . Pull up next to me then they take off, I let them exceed, then I punch it. Then what do you know, there are way back as I look in my rear view mirror. So never under estimate the outside of a BMW 335i sedan. Lol!

  • @BradMason2014
    @BradMason2014 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just as a quick tip: to tell what series injectors you have on an N54 motor; as in Index 12 vs say, 9, or any other version; simply take off the engine cover. Then you can easily look and see the injector numbers on the back side. It's the last number after the dash. You don't even need to pull them to see the numbers visibly.

    Thanks for vid. I enjoy following your stuff. Question: I plan on getting e92, probably n52. Too many horror stories on N54. The N55 is likely less of a headache, but at three years more recent, they tend to be unaffordable. I've heard that N52 was port injected. That would be a plus for me over even the N55. I'm not sure having to walnut blast my valves all the time and all those HPFP failures are worth the turbo benefit, and I'm on a tighter budget. To be fair, BMW is not the only one foisting this stupid incomplete design that's expedient for sales but not good for long-lasting quality on us. Is it correct that N52 had port injection? I only found an article from australia on this, but don't know if their car versions were different than ours in USA.
    I can put up with a few extra mech problems in exchange for more satisfying driving experience, but I won't stand for getting stranded. So unless I have documentation that the water pump/thermo is relatively new, I'm going to replace them right off the bat. I don't want any plastic - - - - ! in the new pump. Is there a non-BMW water pump that's made better, like with all metal construction? Or otherwise are there any water pumps for e92 that are known to be longer lasting and more reliable than BMW's?
    Finally, have you ever driven an "i" model and then and "xi" version of the same model? EG a 335i vs 335xi? Can you feel much difference in the handling? Can you feel the extra weight of the xi when you drive it? Which would you say is more rewarding to drive? I could not find any comparison on the web where the handling characteristics and differences of the AWD and RWD versions are compared in detail. I do NOT care how they perform in the snow, even though I'm a skier. I'm only interested in how they differ on dry roads and in the rain.
    thanks

    Yes, Great cars. Buying them can be the cheapest part of owning one. though. These cars are not cheap to repair, so maintenance is key.They are engineered to perform at a high level, so realise that you do need to "invest" in them and don't skimp on maintenance.Lovely and rewarding drive, when they are operating at 100%.
    Budget for walnut blasting, and get the M sport model if you can - so stable on the road. Like a lot of European cars, the headlining can come loose, and if you have a sun/panorama roof, this is very expensive to reline {approx $1500 USD}

    cars are always a damn gamble. the last few cars have been nightmares but u get what you pay for i guess. 2 cars needed transmissions. my current car needed a clutch, struts, coolant res cracked and leaked all over so had to get new belts, coolant hose bolt came loose and luckily i just had to tighten it myself. i'm sure a mechanic would have replaced the hose or something to make money.
    cars always need parts replaced at certain intervals or wear. manual clutches wear out every 60K or so (guessing) and need a clutch kit to replace it. sometimes a flywheel is needed as well. then maybe some brakes and tires. just replace the whole car!
    due to major depreciation i might get a 2014 audi a4 or bmw. 328 or 335. obviously 335 is the way to go for fun. so crazy a car can be $42K and 3 years later its $19. what i find appealing is the warranty that BMW has. i like the awd aspect of the audi but winters aren't too bad where i live now. if i was still in buffalo i would droll over the A4.
    back in the day, a neighbor had an old subaru. looked like a piece of crap, ugly. but it could drive in a snow covered field like a damn army tank. it was hilarious. that car could go anywhere.

    Good advice. You covered all the important stuff. with that said, I do think that a person getting a 335i should have the car inspected by a BMW mechanic before purchase. You will be buying a high performance car so, you need to know what you getting yourself into when buying used.

    I had a 2008 bmw 335xi. Bought it with 57k miles from BMW dealership, drove it for a year it immediately had problems with the ECU and the exhaust rattling from an emissions flap that they couldn't fix without replacing the exhaust. One day I was driving it and out of nowhere there was a very bad grinding sound from the engine, the car shut off I had to get it towed, no light ever came on. The dealership told me that the engine had spontaneously combusted and there were pieces of steel in the engine. This all happened at 68k miles. I highly recommend not buying this car used I lost 14k because a new engine would be 22k so i had to trade it in for 3. It was fun driving it, but all the quirks and problems are not worth it especially if you can't afford to dish out thousands of dollars whenever something goes wrong.

    Yo, I think you are doing a good job with these videos in terms or addressing certain topics, but I would really suggest you would cut down on uninformative elaborations and repeating same things few times over. I think is mainly the enthusiasts that watch your videos and they don't need long intros into what 335 is about. Usually I see and interesting headline name of your video thinking that's smth I'd like to hear on, but I end up not being able to wait through the long intros and eventually close the video without hearing the main points.
    Hey, its just my personal opinion if anything and I saying all of this with good will.

      I have 137k original owner and on the original clutch and tuned for 50k miles. The clutch on some early cars makes noise because BMW over-engineered certain components, the clutch being one of them. Dual mass flywheels on performance oriented cars make a bit of chatter. This car is no different.

    Hey dude! How has everything been? Just a heads up you should look into a vehicle service contract man. I only pay $70 a month to cover my e60 for full coverage (excluding routine maintenance) and I cannot be any happier.

    • @iAlwaysSpeakTheTruth
      @iAlwaysSpeakTheTruth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hit me up, I'll give you the company name and everything. I have a high mileage e60 and my friends 545i had 205k miles before his idrive took a dump.. part alone was $4000! So having the peace of mind is awesome. The company has a waiting period of 60 days so I'm on my 51st day, they do that to protect themselves of fraud. But yeah, I got quoted a cheaper price on a 335i with lower miles than my 530i, I'm assuming maintenance costs are more expensive on mine now because of mileage? Don't exactly know. But yeah man go for it! Respond back if you can.

    • @iAlwaysSpeakTheTruth
      @iAlwaysSpeakTheTruth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also put money upfront $2500 with no waiting period. And yeah my M54 engine consumes close to 2 quarts in 2 months because the piston rings are worn lol. I've been topping my oil off other than that no real complaints, but that's what the warranty will be for down the road 🐎
